You love those jeans so much!!! :-)

i don't remember this photo!
― Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:37 (sixteen years ago) link
I could never never wear them cos I don't like having things around my waist. Also high-waisted jeans are so not the answer to sitting at a desk all day with the tummy bunched up. But I like that photo of her and I thought the disapproval when it came out was terribly unfair. :)

x-post
I can't remember what it was for but I think she was modeling. Maybe Imitation of Christ or something like that? I just know that I've seen Laurel post about that pic/those jeans a bunch of times before. They're like her holy grail jeans.

hmmmm.

I think that they look good on her and she looks awesome there but I could never wear anything like that. I'd look ridic.

thx for posting that!

(the pic)
Yes! Phil beat me to it -- like I said, I couldn't wear them either, but that's about the only way I like jeans with heels.
― Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:41 (sixteen years ago) link
i think the cigarette is kind of what makes the pic even moar laurel-y!

I do actually have a pair of pointy red '50s stilettos and I have been known to wear them with very tapered ankle-length jeans. Mostly to like garage rock shows, though. Guilty as charged.

my friend's reaction to that look -- friend: that takes a certain kind of woman but it is gorgeous

Ha, weird, I totally accept the shoe-swallowing on those proper trousers, but there is still a tiny part of my brain that has guy standards and is confused by the lack of feet/shoes and wonders about ease of walking and generally associates shoe-swallowing with
As for the ScarJo 50s-style high-waist tapered-leg heels thing, I know not many people are going to have the body type and inclinations to really pull that off, but I hope that fact will encourage those who can to run with it.

whoah, what happened there? "generally associates shoe-swallowing with ... sloppy teenage boys and ravers," was most of what I was going to say, I think

Will have to add that to the vocabulary thread. HORSEMOUNTER (adj.): things that look nice but a bit more "fabulous" than Laurel or Lauren would be likely to enjoy

those jeans are busted seamed with selvage which is more often than not very $$$.
the finish is atrocious though, esp. the way the outseam is totally ribboned up. total no-no.

WHY IS SHE WEARING A SCARF IN AUGUST?
― tehresa, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 20:50 (sixteen years ago) link
hmm... that outfit is kind of a mash-up of katie and v. beckham , actually. a few preppy chic items, nice but possibly a bit boring/too "old" for her, thrown together with ugly ultra-premium denim and vaguely takcy stilettos.
― lauren, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 20:54 (sixteen years ago) link
er, tacky.
haha i love those shoes.

i kinda like it except not the color of the jeans. brings back memories of spending like an hour trying to cuff my jeans properly every time there was dress-down day (eg didn't have to wear uniforms) in middle school.
― daria-g, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 21:36 (sixteen years ago) link
last night on the train i saw, in real life, a man wearing the jeans rolled up like katie holmes. i had to write this down so i didn't forget bc it was so o_O but he was also wearing dirty white keds (the old school lace up kind, not the slip ons like vans), a keffiyeh, and a vest. also carrying what seemed to be a womens leather tote/purse.
woah.

"Boyfriend" jeans, aka the hand-me-downs Levis you stole from your brother for painting the front porch in that cost about $27 at Sears in 1992. Nice work, fashun industry.

― Abbott, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:01 (sixteen years ago) link
fuck em! i have a friend who i've NEVER seen in jeans. it's strange.
― Surmounter, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:01 (sixteen years ago) link
I took the advice on this thread and bought my last two pairs of Levis as tight as possible and I'm not sure it is the right decision. One pair fits around the waste but is a bit tight around the thighs, so much so that when I walk up the subway stairs I feel very conscious of working against the stiffness of the material. The other pair fits throughout the leg but is a bit tight around the stomach. When i come home I have to undo the top button so that I can be comfortable. Did I follow your advice too literally?

laurel, please explain this 'bias cut cotton twill' thing and how to spot it, since i know nothing about fabric.
― i hope you don't pray to jesus with that mouth (Rubyredd), Thursday, 20 November 2008 19:41 (fifteen years ago) link
Uh. Denim is a twill. It stretches "on the bias" that is, around your round parts (as do many other woven fabrics to some degree, the gradual stretch and fiber "memory" is just a quality of cotton in general). Which is pretty much everywhere, since jeans are constructed as flat items but have to go on non-flat bodies. You don't have to know anything about fabric! :D
Mary, I'm wearing a new pair of jeans right now that I bought on...last Thurs? One week and about 4 wearings later, they are still a little too tight but still stretching gradually. Personally, that's the tightness I want over the life of the jeans. If they stretch too much now, they'll be baggy in three months. The first few wearings are def not comfortable!

ahh ok i thought it was some kind of special fabric-cut, like a bias-cut skirt! gah, and i work in a clothing store!
