what's the best way to fix broken plastic frames? super glue? epoxy?

cozen, Friday, 28 May 2010 19:30 (fourteen years ago) link

go to goggles4u.com or zennioptical.com and buy new ones for $10 instead!

just1n3, Friday, 28 May 2010 22:10 (fourteen years ago) link

I already have £10 glasses! these unfortunately are p. expensive, so I'd like to repair them

cozen, Friday, 28 May 2010 22:16 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd try super glue to start with, epoxy can be kind of a mess.

Ordered prescription sunglasses from ZenniOptical 2 weeks ago, now waiting on the package to arrive.

getting classic rayban eyeglasses

any advice on whether it's best to go authentic / knock-off ?

boo (surm), Friday, 17 December 2010 11:38 (thirteen years ago) link

you're in NY right? I got my glasses here:

http://store.fabulousfannys.com/catalog

nice selection of vintage frames. no reason to pay for new ray-bans imo

one month passes...

so I got those big cateyes above, ordered them online as a leap of faith. I might have chickened out if I had tried them on in a store but now that they're here I'm going to own the look. or something.

some of them are a little tom ford-y? but you can't really argue w/ that price point imho

those are awesome!

do you have a style in mind? shannon's on a hunt but doesn't know what she wants. looking for ideas

she hasn't had glasses in a while, only contacts

dmr, Friday, 25 March 2011 01:09 (thirteen years ago) link

ooh i had my exam yesterday, but i got my pupils dilated and i couldn't see, so i really couldn't try on any frames.

i do, however, need to do this soon, because my eyes are getting progressively more irritated by contacts in the past year. given that i tried about 5 different brands last year, doc says the only solution is to wear contacts less and glasses more.

i think i just need to take someone with me to find frames that look good on my face and then try to find an approximation on googles4u or whatever.

tehresa, Friday, 25 March 2011 01:31 (thirteen years ago) link

I want new glasses too but have no idea what kind. It's a big decision!

ENBB, Friday, 25 March 2011 01:31 (thirteen years ago) link

I had my pupils dialated at my last exam a couple weeks ago and had to drive home. It sucked.

ENBB, Friday, 25 March 2011 01:32 (thirteen years ago) link

haha my bf was so concerned about me driving that he came and met me and we went to trader joe's to do some grocery shopping before he would allow me to return to my car and drive home.

tehresa, Friday, 25 March 2011 01:32 (thirteen years ago) link

The Dr. was like oh you'll be fine - just wear your sunglasses. I mean it was fine for the most part since it's only close up vision that's the prob but still a v v weird sensation.

ENBB, Friday, 25 March 2011 01:33 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah. i didn't have any sunglasses with me, and i told bf that it was ok, the only messed up part was the close up vision, but he was like 'this is not a good idea.' lol.

tehresa, Friday, 25 March 2011 01:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I wanna try some of the ones from the site elmo posted above

who is john nult? (dayo), Friday, 25 March 2011 01:35 (thirteen years ago) link

i tried some and they all looked absolutely hideous on me. i hate wearing glasses though, so the stronger color/larger frame styles i tend to dislike. thinking about getting a new pair. wondering if i should try yet again to switch to contacts..

daria-g, Friday, 25 March 2011 02:29 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean, i like some of the warby parker frames. just not on me, they are kind of overwhelming

daria-g, Friday, 25 March 2011 02:30 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe find some rimless glasses?

homosexual II, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 05:37 (thirteen years ago) link

still need to get an eye exam -- tax refund in hand, need to get on those warby parkers.

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 12:30 (thirteen years ago) link

woman @ eye doc frame store says I need frames That are slightly round (rather than angular) but her selection was awful so I still don't know what would look good on me!

Americans, a few weeks ago I got a free pair of glasses from ClearlyContacts.ca and they sent me an email telling me that Americans would get a free pair special in April.. hopefully I am not too late! I think the US site is CoastalContacts ? "Like" them on FB and you should be able to find out about the offer soonish. My pair were $150 and lovely quality; I managed to order two Jones NY pairs for $20 each last week on the strength of that quality.

i always order my contacts from them and they send me free things (like cases or sunglasses, which are ugly but usable for running/hiking).

nice! I'm usually a Zenni girl because I'm cheap but it was super nice to get the freebies/cheap quality frames!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:11 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i will probably go with zenni/goggles4u once i figure out what i should actually get.

coming from me, who has written many bestsellers (tehresa), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Bad influence tip: Zenni shipping is the same no matter how many glasses you order >:}

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:15 (thirteen years ago) link

hey ffm what are your online ordering tips? I am tempted to go that route but am nervous buying frames I haven't tried on!!!

ENBB, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:17 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah that's why i was asking for shape/size tips at the store. but i am still pretty clueless. my technique will probably be: get really cheap ones in case i hate them.

coming from me, who has written many bestsellers (tehresa), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:18 (thirteen years ago) link

try a bunch on at a store if you don't know what suits you - I just kinda wing it nowadays but the first few pairs I ordered, I used my existing glasses as a reference - measured the width, length of the arms, etc so that I knew they would look the right size on me. Then, it's trial and error. I have about 5 pairs that I've accumulated that just didn't work on me, but since I only pay $10-30 it worked out.. don't be tempted by Zenni's $8 wire frame ones because they consistently always look junky. What looks bulky online is a normal size & what looks thin online is cheap IRL. IMO.

also if you are getting a prescription.. get your doc to give your your PPD (pupillary distance) - otherwise you can just have a friend do it with a ruler.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:29 (thirteen years ago) link

yah ffm otm. i have about 6 or 7 pairs of specs i bought from either zennioptical or goggles4u. goggles has ridic sales all the time and they're selling designer frames now, too.

just1n3, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 14:06 (thirteen years ago) link

I've gotten burned a few times buying online - no substitute for trying stuff out in person, imo

i think drake distracts (dayo), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 14:09 (thirteen years ago) link

burned in as, I paid some $$ for some nice vintage frames that look awesome in the huge and helpful pics that the seller provided, but they just didn't look that good when I tried them on irl

i think drake distracts (dayo), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 14:09 (thirteen years ago) link

well, you shouldn't be paying brick & mortar prices online. :) the incentive for me is that it costs me $300 for two pairs of glasses & lenses IRL, but can be as low as $40 online. If I have to buy a third pair to find the right fit, still works out for me.. but I've tried hundreds of pairs on at shops so I know exactly which styles look good on me. Wish that I could figure out my camera angles next! ;)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 14:23 (thirteen years ago) link

so sad about these glasses, upthread - http://i37.tinypic.com/afkjmc.jpg - got some sort of spots on the lens (hair spray damage, maybe? it doesn't scratch off..) and now I can't wear them without living in a fog :( gotta find a place in toronto that'll replace the frames cheaply.. I only paid $20 for the frame & lens to begin with, but I love those goofy ones. (though not those goofy bangs. I've learned my lesson.)
