there is absolutely no chance in hell of me commuting in heels. 40 minutes crowded train + 20 minutes walking = so not gonna happen

bell_labs, Thursday, 28 August 2008 16:26 (fifteen years ago) link

though i see women doing this all the time. they are obviously aliens. or have a higher pain threshold or magic feet or something.

bell_labs, Thursday, 28 August 2008 16:28 (fifteen years ago) link

or higher arches. i have 2 friends who have crazy high arches and claim that heels are more comfortable for them than flats.

lauren, Thursday, 28 August 2008 16:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Well, ideally around a 1.5" heel or so. Those totally flat ballet slippers that have been popular for a couple of years are DEATH to my feet.

Laurel, Thursday, 28 August 2008 16:32 (fifteen years ago) link

oh yeah, i have non-existant arches.

bell_labs, Thursday, 28 August 2008 16:33 (fifteen years ago) link

i have crazy high arches and i need a bit of a heel - super flat shoes are super ow - i need at least an inch of heel or cushion or whatever

rrrobyn, Thursday, 28 August 2008 16:35 (fifteen years ago) link

these girls are a special case, laurel. both routinely wear 3"+ heels as if they were fuzzy slippers.

lauren, Thursday, 28 August 2008 16:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I didn't think I was one of those people! I sprained my ankle on Saturday, so I'm feeling a little nervous about heels right now.

Laurel, Thursday, 28 August 2008 16:38 (fifteen years ago) link

i am wearing 3+" wedges today! i know they are not "real heels" but i am bascially 6 feet tall in them and it feels pretty awes. i have never worn "real heels" over 2.5" high tho.

rrrobyn, Thursday, 28 August 2008 17:09 (fifteen years ago) link

i got the high arches. i think that is part of why i have such a difficult time finding flats i like! i have some 3 1/2" or so wedges. i can walk ok in them, it's just you have to take really tiny steps bc the surface area of the bottom of the shoe is cut in half or something!

tehresa, Thursday, 28 August 2008 17:25 (fifteen years ago) link

hm - maybe it depends on the shoe tho?
the simple advice of 'just walk a little slower and with slightly shorter steps' (my steps are v long in first place) seems to have done wonders for me

i just ordered these (i checked it with laurel, and she said it was ok :)

i don't really love them but come on, $50.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 21:09 (fifteen years ago) link

(also i SWORE i wasn't going to buy anything online this week, oh well. i do need sensible work boots and i'm not going to find a cheaper pair. also that site has like 6 pages of campers for $50 fyi)

bell_labs, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 21:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Ahaha! Wear them in good health, lovely!

Laurel, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 21:11 (fifteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...

okay so rrobyn put something into my head that I can't get rid of

http://i38.tinypic.com/11awyfm.jpg

Opinions? I wanted to go for pink but it's a light pink and that + salt + slush sounds like a bad combination, these I would like to think would at least wear it better... they are customizable from Timberland's website for $180 (eep) but look warm and walkable. Anyone own Timberland boots of any design, who can comment on warmth of shoe?? I go to North Bay sometimes in the winter, where it's not unheard of to see 5-6 feet of snow!!

I'm kind of sick of tall black "dressy" boots after wearing similar for the past few years..

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 25 September 2008 17:19 (fifteen years ago) link

oh man, my friends are hating those and calling them santa's shoes :( I just want something warm, comfortable, low heeled and available in size 11 that isn't your standard black boots for once! sigh

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 25 September 2008 20:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I also hate brown.. so my options are pretty much grey or red

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 25 September 2008 20:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I would go to an Army-Navy supply store and buy paratrooper jump boots before I'd pay $180 for those. Admittedly the color is cheering, but overall it wouldn't be a good trade-off for me.

Another thing: I don't know how warm they'd be, the website specifies that they're waterproof but says NOTHING about any kind of insulation...? Also I have a beef with the catalog copy, it says "perfect for jeans". Jeans?? What kind of jeans can you pull ABOVE YOUR KNEES to lace up a 14" boot shaft? Puhleeze. Maybe my GAP overalls from college.

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Thursday, 25 September 2008 20:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Fair enough.. I've never worn Timberlands but I see them up here on people all the time and they generally look warm! It's funny that you suggest paratrooper boots because I was a total army boots girl for years and years before buying a few pairs of classic black boots. Hah. I figured the only way I could go was crazy red and rugged soled! I will keep looking..

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 25 September 2008 20:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Hmmm! Well, there are a couple of ex-Army boots types around here, so you're in good company (quincie?).

Did you look at Sorel? We used to have their kids' boots when I was little, and just keep handing them down in the family...I'd trust 'em, and I kind of like these!

i have these for when the weather turns really serious. they come off at the office, of course. if it's just mildly gross outside, i wear these (from sporto; insulated, which is v. important):

i'm not sure what to think about shoes like this

http://www.payless.com/Images/600x600/064100_7_600x600.jpg

i don't think i "get" peep toe boots

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 18:15 (fifteen years ago) link

those have more problems than just the peep toe. but yeah, it's kind of weird.

i just tried on the corso como boots i mentioned upthread, and unfortunately they're really slouchy through the ankle. nothing against slouchy boots, but that's so not what i want!

lauren, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:23 (fifteen years ago) link

ha yeah i perhaps did not pick the best example of shoe but the peep toe just really stuck out at me on that one for some reason.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:27 (fifteen years ago) link

I have the worst taste in the world, but I'm looking for some boot type shoes. What do you guys think of these?

kind of digging this in wine, though they're not really what i need right now... http://tinyurl.com/48ygbh

burt, those are dangerously close those things I think are called Wallabys (sp?)? Thus I would say you could do better, IMHO.

quincie, Monday, 6 October 2008 00:38 (fifteen years ago) link

burt i vote Y on those, they're nice

It's a desert boot style ... they've been a thing in NYC for a while, I guess.

i have a strange compulsion to buy these: http://tinyurl.com/3f3dg7

i know it is wrong.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 13:23 (fifteen years ago) link

i like those! i almost bought a pair last weekend that were sort of like that, but they have a sort of golf shoe fringe across the top instead of lacing up. if that makes any sense.

lauren, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 14:32 (fifteen years ago) link

TZA: I dunno, I think those are a tiny bit precious but cute! Probably not a bad idea at all. Unless the quality is terrible, I didn't look that closely.

daria, I don't think they're ugly at all. But then I like Clark's, too.

Lauren, who made the very delicate brogue-styled black lace-ups you had on the other day??

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 20:38 (fifteen years ago) link

you'll never believe it... steve madden. which explains why the "leather" already has started to flake on the toes.

lauren, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 20:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh bah. I keep telling myself: NO MORE STEVE MADDEN. And then I hear the siren song of some glossy or metallic flat...

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 20:58 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i saw some boots on endless i thought were cute and then noticed "STEVE MADDEN" and did not click.
