the only type of vest that i can wear is the puffy outerwear kind
my boyfriend likes to wear vests a lot, but they are more the rugged style, less the tailored -- woolrich / filson / &c -- boiled wool, not worsted, that sort

Can’t argue that this is straight steaze at the top level.

we call those down ones in synthetic fabrics gilets and they sadly have cultural baggage in the uk which makes them v difficult to pull off imo (same goes for barbour et al)
― caek, Thursday, 28 February 2013 20:17 (eleven years ago) link
what type of cultural baggage
re: gilets there are some badass ones on the market right now

i have a sweater vest but tend to wear it with a blazer over it, just a slightly less warm way of doing the blazer/jumper thing.
have also been considering the waistcoat/vest but it is a bit risky, i agree. have tried some on but not quite taken the plunge.
xpost barbour is surely as much hipster as tory now?

the quilted ones are awful but i quite like the wax ones, some varieties of them.

i guess "country wear" is aesthetically the uk equiv of the lumberjack look, but socioeconomically it is ... oh boy
― caek, Thursday, 28 February 2013 20:19 (eleven years ago) link
is it overly pedantic to say that the dude pictured @ tlg's link is not wearing a "vest" imho?
"denim trucker with the sleeves cut off" is a v specific thing, above and beyond "vest"

how is it not a vest?

i think in touches it's a pretty good look. like i mean a tweed blazer is actually pretty great imo, even tho it arguably has those associations.

ha i was just about to mention the mac

george harrison could cut his sleeves off and look pretty good i think but i guess that's a trucker w/ sleeves cut off
― the late great, Thursday, 28 February 2013 20:25 (eleven years ago) link
from a formal standpoint, insofar as it covers the torso and lacks sleeves, then yes, it is a vest

yeah i'm talking more quilted barbour and technical stuff like north face and "too posh to wash" and red trousers, etc. got no beef with tweed. i think i might actually be imagining the whole look.
― caek, Thursday, 28 February 2013 20:25 (eleven years ago) link
trucker vest is definitely a different feeling, e.g.

p.s. that and afaict most of last year's levi's vintage line is on deep, deep sale today at https://us.venteprivee.com/main/index.html#/product/10727/1053785

no i know exactly the look you mean, it is sort of overpowering and you know the exact type of person when you meet them. usually really badly fitting gilets too, like it's a uniform and it doesn't matter how you wear it.

i need shasta's help with sizing before i risk ordering from that sale though (would have to ship to friends, etc.), by which time it will be too late : (
xp, ha, yes, i was hoping it was all a dream.

not wearing it at the moment cos I'm home but normally wear a Khoti type Islamic waistcoat as part of my outdoor/day wear. Find it really handy for carrying things in pockets like walkman, camera, and all the other things I carry, (mini-torch, ersatz swiss army knife, lighter, travel toothbrush, lipbalm, little stone skull etc etc)
is getting a bit worn in the lining so I'm trying to get hold of a couple of others. This one has been very useful cos it was cut a bit shorter than others I've had, that means it doesn't hang below my outside jacket. Want to get more of these things thi short.
