my cotton-linen shorts from uniqlo passed away friday from an unpatchable tear in the crotch. they were two years old. they fit comfortably and fell to a flattering length, all while maintaining an effortless casual attitude that was their hallmark. they are survived by some other shorts, mostly cut-off pants, which ultimately aren't as good looking and don't fit as well.

I long in vain for my lost pair of charcoal corduroy pants from H&M's 2005 collection. They were lost forever last year, and so far no pant has compared no matter how hard I've looked. But I guess there's a point when you just have to move on... and then you realize, the most important thing to gain was not a new pair of pants, but a lesson about the impermanence of life. Thank you, pants, you knew what you were doing all along. The hard lessons are always the most important ones.

tattered h&m charcoal pants floating in the aether: yes burt, i'm gone now, but i'll always be there in your heart. i'm proud of how much you've grown since we were last together. but you have a life to live and I want to see you happy. find a new pair of pants; even if it doesn't feel right at first, just see where it goes. you'll never know where life takes you if you don't give things a chance.

burt_stanton: I don't know why, but suddenly I feel full of hope. Dress Barn, here i come!

bright silver w/red, yellow, black nike track shoes, from a thrift, someone took the cleats off them.. super lightweight and really stylish

perfectly worn out ck jeans shorts that were somewhat high waisted

very dark heavy denim levis, must have been some premium line, that cost a good bit of money @ printemps haussmann

pretty sure i gave these away impulsively though hoping they turn up somewhere in my closet

from late 80's early 90's: white tshirt with glittery stars, off the shoulder, and tuxedo tails in the back.. ocean pacific white tshirt with black + neon batik print.. high top black reeboks

mid 90's: dad's heavy black wool turtleneck sweater that i cut the neck off & shredded the cuffs from too much wear.. my favorite black velvet pea coat.. my black watch plaid flannel shirt

all this stuff would still fit me if i hadn't gone and given it away

my red and white pinstriped Bernhard Willhelm lederhosen shirt. the straps that criss cross on the back always get caught on doorknobs and stuff like that. keep tearing off :( :(

sad thread!

i had a dark blue & green wool scarf with a hidden zipperered pocket in it - that was my mom's when she was younger! - and lost it one new year's eve several years ago :( i have never lost another scarf since, and my bf at the time even gave me an italian wool scarf that was his and that he got in italy but still, sentiment...

DKNY Jeans soho style jeans that fit perfectly, with pocket abrasions earned by sitting on oh-so-many brick walls, you have escaped death temporarily as a pair of cutoff shorts. i mourn only your youth.

Tight royal-blue corduroy Shaggy-style flares I wore so often at the start of the millennium: thank you for your loyal service. I'm sorry I wore out the insides of your thighs, and if I were a smarter person I'd have found a way to patch you up and reinforce you.

To my maroon Costume National velvet motorcycle'ish jacket... why did I have to be brushing my teeth in you and drop a giant blob of colgate on your breast pocket... UGH

I have lost every band tee I've ever owned, just about. I miss my Half Japanese "Charmed Life" and Dinosaur Jr. "Green Mind" tour shirts the most.

Phil: dry cleaning!

Pleats Please slingback sneakers in red/grey/black/brown, you are too pranged on the toe to wear any more but am I tossing you? Nuh-uh.

Moths, I hate you for everything you did to my clothes 2002-6 and I am still trying to reassure myself that you do not lay your eggs in camping equipment or dreadlocks. I am still darning holes in cashmere because of your slovenly, greedy ways.

a guy i know had all his band t-shirts in a box that his mum threw out. they were all grunge groups who had amassed grungy-band-t-shirt-chic with time.

i miss my plain zip up stretchy black hooded cardigan. it still exists, but like the guy from the start of the godfather's daughter - not beautiful anymore, and forever tainted with rueful sadness. you can only buy zip up tops with kangaroo pouches now. they are ridiculous.

schlump, Saturday, 25 October 2008 22:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Suzy, what is the secret of darning??? I need to know.

I have a bag of sweaters that I've been thinking I need to find some way to embellish with beading or etc to hide the tiny puckers of darning. But maybe I'm just doing it rong??

omg! not that jacket!

ugh, yes, that jacket. it looks either like toothpaste stain or someone shot a big load all over me. which is why im hesitant to take it to a dry cleaner and have to explain...

phil-two, Monday, 27 October 2008 20:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Most dry cleaners have seen the odd toothpaste splorch. Shyness = not like you.

My darning successes generally involve black sweaters with tiny inconvenient moth holes. You just have to be super-careful to never vary the pressure on your stitches and don't be too keen to seal the hole in like three goes. I sew an X to start, but leave a thread tail on the reverse and don't knot the initial stitch, Then I sew a square shape at an angle to the X and carefully stitch the hole closed, last poke of the needle bringing thread out the back. Cut the thread from the needle and tie off the threads in such a way that you gather the work together before knotting the threads securely. That work?

My favorite coral wool pea coat, I'll miss you, but coats that are a size too big are not keeping the cold out!

RIP oversized pj harvey 'to bring you my love' shirt from the mid-90s. guess i got rid of it. what was i thinking?

slightly concerned that my skinny puppy t-shirt vanished in my last move. i don't really wear it and i'm not a huge fan or anything but i hope it's still around..
