These Eye(glasse)s

Branching from another thread, this is a pair of eyeglasses I ordered from ZenniOptical.com for $19 (plus $6.99 shipping to Canada for the four pairs I ordered):

http://zennioptical.com/cart/d_6905.jpg

I ordered the ones in purple/periwinkle, which I am excited for. I've never had any "fun" glasses because of the prohibitive cost, so to buy these cheap ones is very exciting.

http://zennioptical.com/cart/d_6447.jpg

I also got these in red, and the yellow pair below. The wire ones were only $8. They may break more quickly than your standard wire pair, but I am gentle on my glasses generally (when my dog isn't eating them.)

This website has a lot of information about what you need to know in terms of prescription, measurements and trustworthy sites - http://glassyeyes.blogspot.com/

I'd love to see what everyone else finds in terms of cute cheap glasses!

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 05:58 (fifteen years ago) link

yes, but the lenses on this site seem to be wholesale price lenses.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 02:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Zenni says my order shipped today EEK can't wait! It's coming from Hong Kong, so will probably take a week or more :( My housemate has twice gotten packages this week and both times I got irrationally excited and then downtrodden.

am i retarded or do none of these sites sell regular sunglasses frames with prescription lenses? they only seem to offer clip-ons.

i have trouble finding glasses: less so now, since they've started making narrower frames, but when i go trying on frames i can usually only find 2 or 3 that actually look good.

And seriously, help me out with this. Lenscrafters and those places are out of reach for my insurance dollars. The only place that will cut me a break is my own doctor's office.

Does any of that sound right?

☑ (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 17 October 2008 19:57 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't have insurance dollars.

the biggest rip EVER is the contact lens "fitting fee" - an additional $80 on top of your eye exam to renew the same exact prescription for a box of little plastic things. wtf. seriously.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Friday, 17 October 2008 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Rubyredd: sunglasses - never noticed that about Zenni! Goggles4u.com offers sunglass lens tinting, I think on any lens.

The only insurance coverage I get is $50 every other two years for my eye exam (which cost $75).. that's why I am so happy that Zenni et al are affordable.

mineminefusic (Finefinemusic), Friday, 17 October 2008 20:33 (fifteen years ago) link

i didn't sign up for our vision plan because i wasn't planning on getting contacts, although i'm going to opt for it next year since i want to have lenses for driving. i can't complain, though - my regular ins. gives me an eye exam every year with a small co-pay, and i got vintage frames from a local store for around $40. they recommended an ultra-cheap optician in chinatown who put in the prescription for another $40.

lauren, Friday, 17 October 2008 20:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I just paid $75 for my annual contact lenses exam and another 100 for lenses only to find out 2 weeks later that I can't wear them anymore. WAH!!

OK, I'm still in the market for new glasses. My father suggested I get some frameless ones like "his girlfriend" S. Palin. I think that's the last thing I want. I would love to get one of these cheap pairs online but am v nervous about getting glasses w/o trying them on.

Tza - do you mind telling what brand those are?

Zangelbert Bingledack (ENBB), Friday, 17 October 2008 20:51 (fifteen years ago) link

ENBB - I will provide full quality report when I get mine in order to sway you to the dark side :) I have tried on lots of glasses in the past, so I knew which styles suited me reasonably, and I measured the hell out of my glasses to ensure any I ordered would fit. Sadly, my gigantic head (proportional to my height, at least) ruled out a lot of really adorable frames..

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Friday, 17 October 2008 20:57 (fifteen years ago) link

zenni will do a tint on any glasses they do-- we just ordered 2 pair, really looking forward to having prescription sunglasses for driving.

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Sunday, 26 October 2008 23:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Update: I got all the eyeglasses.

Good news: 4 out of 5 are pretty cute on me.
Bad news: The optometrist I visited wrote a +1.00 where there should have been a -1.00 on the chart I asked her for help with, and trusting her, I did not compare the chart I ordered off of with the prescription she gave me. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Anyway I am going to take one pair to Walmart to have its lens fixed for $30, and mail the rest back (apparently will cost me $10 per lens, so $30 plus s&h) to fix three and return that one pair that simply didn't look good on me. Sigh. Lesson learned, I suppose, but I was pretty depressed when I tried on the five pairs in a row and found not one would allow me to see any more clearly than before.. I am going to write a letter to my optometrist in the hopes she will take some responsibility for her error and give me a partial credit so that I don't lose all this money out of pocket. Still, spent about $80 for the glasses and stand to spend around another $60-70 (after refund for the one pair) and that's still less than I paid for the one pair of glasses on my nose at the momeny. The quality is pretty decent, especially the plastic ones. It's been a long time since I had wire glasses so I can't comment on if those are better or worse quality.

Haven't got any pictures except for this silliness:

yeah I am pretty bummed that she could very well be all "I wrote it correctly on your prescription!" which is true but she was so nice about filling out the form and seemed intrigued about there being cheap options online. Blah. Plus side, the glasses came in about two weeks and they're all awesome! They're just not awesome for me.. yet. I hope to be able to wear the purple glasses for my birthday in two weeks, they're the ones I am taking over to Walmart for apparently three day service!

Lex I love those! Sorry about all the hassle you're going through but those are great.

Since I can't wear contacts anymore I got another pair of glasses:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/expatrica/newglasses.jpg

You can't really see the best part about them which is that they're a sort of deep purple on top and fade around the edges so they're a beigy green on the bottom. I wanted something a little more bold and fun.

hahaha yeah I totally get that. having a copy of your prescription is so liberating!

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 6 November 2008 18:02 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm getting frustrated that for the most part, I can only get glasses through my insurance company at an actual eye doctor's office. No online stuff or lenscrafters. So now I'm looking for an eye doctor who's got a decent selection.

This sounds silly, but is there any place online where you can upload a picture of your face and "try" some on?

☑ (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 6 November 2008 18:24 (fifteen years ago) link

I read about the cheap online glasses thing a while ago and have been seriously considering it. My vision is terrible (-9.5 in the bad eye) so I wear contacts 95% of the time. My aunt worked at an optometrist's office last time I got glasses and said everyone checked them out when they arrived because of the engineering marvels necessary to make them wearable. She got them for me wholesale and they were still like $140.

Can I really get ~ $20 glasses in my terrible prescription, different in both eyes, with lenses that aren't an inch thick and super heavy?

a better command of the mummy language (joygoat), Thursday, 6 November 2008 18:48 (fifteen years ago) link

pp, you are lucky your insurance even covers glasses! i don't have any, but when i did, it only covered exam, with a $15 copay.

;n_n; (tehresa), Thursday, 6 November 2008 18:50 (fifteen years ago) link

My insurance also doesn't cover glasses, hence my resorting to trying stuff out online this year. I do get $50 off eye exams but nothing for the frames or lenses.. I ordered five pairs of glasses and spent about $85 (US) all told. I feel the quality is *slightly* less than the $150 pair of glasses I bought in a store in Toronto, but for $130 in savings per frame I am PERFECTLY HAPPY to accept that. I am careful with my glasses generally and the plastic frames I bought feel every bit as stury as the old pair I have from Guess.

Joygoat, I do have a relatively mild prescription so I'm not sure about the options for someone with worse eyes, but I definitely have different prescriptions in each eye and that was no problem.
Looking at Goggles4U suggests that you can pay for thinner lenses: http://goggles4u.com/detail.asp?PID=27215 - see the three columns you can choose from?
What I like about G4U is the cost you see there includes frames and lens and shipping.

Zenni offers: Premium Photochromic lenses for (Clear indoors, darkens outdoors in sunlight ) $39.00
Upgrade to 1.61 index lenses for $17.00
Upgrade to 1.67 index lenses for $37.00
Premium anti reflective coating $4.95
Sunglass color tint coating (7 available) $4.95

I feel like I HAVE seen a place that let you upload an image or something but I can't find it. Maybe http://www.39dollarglasses.com/ ? Maybe they let you print out the frame and hold it up to your own face (which makes more sense, in terms of accurate measurements).

So in summary you may have to pay $50 for a pair, but $50 != $150! :)

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 6 November 2008 20:00 (fifteen years ago) link

So you spent $85 on five pairs of glasses, or $13 for each pair?

FFS, I'll get seven and wear a different pair each day. Hell, I can even reserve a couple of pairs as my "rough-housing" pair.

☑ (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 6 November 2008 21:28 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, I spent $8 ea on two different wire pairs, $19 or so each on two adorable plastic pairs (incl. purple ones upthread) and then $25 on a separate pair from Goggles4U ($25 included the "free" shipping; Zenni charged me $6.00 shipping for the other four pairs.) This is what I'm saying!

i keep looking at the photochromic lenses in office window trying to detect change, but they always look sorta the same to me. (they don't start clear, they always have tint, but they get darker in a bright car, then even darker than that outside. er, supposedly.

Booker van Permalink (Hunt3r), Thursday, 6 November 2008 22:17 (fifteen years ago) link

so i ended up with a sort of rose colored metal with a plastic purple inset in the middle, and purple arms(?). i haven't found a pic yet and i'm too drunk to post a pic of myself but i will soon. so excited that i have a script to buy them online cheap now, though!

;n_n; (tehresa), Friday, 7 November 2008 06:41 (fifteen years ago) link

These are the ones I picked up last night! They're a little wacky in that the arms are two coloured stripes that are slightly different than the two colour stripes on the front, but I also kind of love them. I only ordered them on October 29th and they were ready for pickup last night, so good for Goggles4U for getting them made and shipped so fast! They were also a lot nicer to me, customer service wise - when I ordered with the wrong prescription (optometrists' fault, grr) Goggles4U refunded the full frame price and half the lens, whereas Zenni will refund only 50% of my total purchase price because they "can't fix just one lens" or some such crap. Oh well. Goggles4U also refunded my credit card instantly whereas Zenni is waiting until they receive my glasses (understandable).

Here I am:

SO my free pair turned out cool, as FB people saw.. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/418223_10151065821418578_396312089_n.jpg

But the white sunglasses I ordered - I fucked up! I bought the wrong kind of lens. I paid $20 for transition lenses that tint to 60% grey, when I wanted lens (that were $5!) permanently tinted to 80%. They look SO STUPID on me when they are clear - they are these, but in white - https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/s720x720/554598_10150964684402209_621669017_n.jpg - my eyes are tiny little dots in this vast frame. Going to test them in sunlight this afternoon to see how fast/dark it becomes but then probably sending it back, for only a stupid 50% refund n a $50 pair, grr. Then like a chump I will probably order them again with the proper tint. I can't believe I managed to pair more than I needed to for a shittier product. :(

Hey do you remember when we talked about those glasses that have maths symbols on the temples and how we were like this is cool unless you're actually a mathematician (mathsematician?) and then maybe it feels kind of silly? Well, those same people now make glasses with punctuation symbols on the temples (colon and semicolon) and YOU KNOW WHAT? I want them.

Hello. I have stupid question. Is the pupillary distance measurement just how much/little they bend the wire over your nose or does it have some actual effect on the lenses?

I ask partly because I'm wondering how expensive it is if you get it wrong and partly because I have a wide nose and, idk, just wondering if that relates to anything on the order form really

susuwatari teenage riot (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 3 May 2013 11:43 (ten years ago) link

It effects the placement/orientation of the lenses, I believe. I fucked up the PD number on a pair of glasses I ordered online and they are miserable to wear. I am pretty sure it's unrelated to the wire over your nose, since that is not always bendable, depending on your frames.

carl agatha, Friday, 3 May 2013 12:35 (ten years ago) link

ah OK. Thanks!

Hm, this all seems like the sort of thing I always get wrong without knowing quite where it went wrong. Maybe I should just stop being lazy, go into town, and spend 5 times as much. And then find out that because it's 5 months since my eye test and I just haven't got round to buying new glasses until now (when the coating is disintegrating into little opaque spots on my old pair) they aren't right anyway.

i went to the moscot shop and now i'm thinking about dropping an obscene amount of money on five pieces of wire:

http://www.moscot.com/vintage-eyewear-dov_532_1.html#lenscolor=Clear

fab fanny's had nothing in my size.

i figure if i'm going to go all in for the 2-300 dollar frames i may as well get the custom made english things, because then i can get them a mm or two bigger http://www.framesdirect.com/framesfp/Savile_Row-tekalj/r.html

i'll probably just get these though: http://www.eyewearbrands.com/designer%20glasses/polo%20ralph%20lauren/polo%20ralph%20lauren%20ph%201113m/polo%20ralph%20lauren%20ph%201113m%209001%20silver--black/.

caek, Monday, 21 October 2013 05:22 (ten years ago) link

hah sorry that you didn't find anything you like at fab fan's

last ace up my sleeve is online stuff: e.g., http://optometristattic.com/, http://optometristattic.com/7230_Optometrist_Attic.htm and http://optometristattic.com/7173_Optometrist_Attic.htm and they come in several sizes. but caveat emptor when buying online, i've been burned - not because the products were not sold as promised, but because you really don't know how they'll look on your face until you put them on your face.

shuron is a pretty big mftr of 'vintage' style frames (all new, obv) and i bet more than one store carries them. in fact, i think moscot does. other stores do, probably, and maybe more styles.

xp caek did you end up getting those moscot frames? i've been looking at them myself

my problem is that i have relatively bad eyesight (-7.5 in each eye) and my optometrist advised against getting any wire rimmed glasses because the lenses would be too thick. does anyone with a similar rx have any experience with this style of eyeglasses? if i do go against the advice of my optometrist will they be uncomfortable and make my eyes bulge?

these are a few styles ive been interested in:

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Monday, 29 September 2014 03:09 (nine years ago) link

I'm a -7.5 in one eye and a -9 in the other and have a pair of these:
http://shuronglasses.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/revelation-ebony_2.jpg

So only half a wire rim, and the lenses are at least 3x as thick as the rim at each side by the temples. Not as obvious with the heavy black top parts but might be pretty noticeable with thin rims all the way around. My eyes don't look terribly bulgy or anything though, but I imagine they might with bigger lenses like the top ones you posted.

Sucks having terrible vision cause all the super cheap online glasses places only go up to -6 or something before the either won't make them or charge enough extra that you aren't saving that much money over getting them locally.

nah i tried the moscot's on in store but the frames i liked weren't available in my size (massive head)

got a pair of these in the end http://optometristattic.com/7173_Optometrist_Attic.htm

yeah i'm finding that my rx is really limiting my options which wasn't really a problem for the last 10 years or so since i'd always wanted the thicker plastic frames. are thick lenses a purely cosmetic issue or are there functional issues as well?

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Monday, 29 September 2014 17:09 (nine years ago) link

Even the high index 1.67 glasses would be too thicK?

, Monday, 29 September 2014 18:00 (nine years ago) link

i asked if i could get "thinner lenses" (cuz i didn't do my research and didn't know to ask about high index) and the optometrist said that because i'm looking at frames that would use larger lenses, the curvature of the edges would be pronounced even with the thinner lenses

i'm probably going to go and get another opinion from another store

Sad that clear frames are becoming a trend just after I had to switch from my own pair :~(

clear frames can be very cool. i've also seen some wood frames (that may not actually be wood) that look pretty cool

marcos, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:48 (nine years ago) link

Clear frames have been a thing for a few years now, no?

I'm pretty sure I need... bifocals. Sigh.

carl agatha, Friday, 9 January 2015 18:30 (nine years ago) link

i am thinking about these: https://i.warbyparker.com/d/f/9791b6184a69b31a3c23915ce7ee3a060342b01c/1000x500

marcos, Friday, 23 January 2015 16:16 (nine years ago) link

I like those!

I have an eye appointment tomorrow morning and I'm super excited to pick out some new frames.

carl agatha, Friday, 23 January 2015 16:33 (nine years ago) link

yea i have one in couple weeks. figure i might as well take advantage of the eye care insurance i have. i've had the same black wire frames for a while and i feel like i need somethng new. you need to change it up you know

marcos, Friday, 23 January 2015 16:39 (nine years ago) link

I got these, in black - http://www.blackfin.eu/v10/blackfin/en/optical.asp?id=5PR673S54C396.

They are rounder than they look in that photo, but what really sold me was that they are super light and the arms are flexible. They are so comfortable! And I mean good looking, too, but I've never really gone the comfort glasses route and these are the best of both worlds.

Oh and yes, totally, bifocals. The doc had me hold a bottle of eye drops with tiny print on the label and then held lenses of the proper magnification in front of my regular glasses and it was a fucking miracle.

seven months pass...

i just got glasses & they got scratched inside the case in less than 12 fucking hours. can I get them exchanged?

welltris (crüt), Friday, 18 September 2015 11:44 (eight years ago) link

anything else would be terrible customer/warranty policy service imo

niels, Friday, 18 September 2015 11:48 (eight years ago) link

they're from lenscrafters :(

welltris (crüt), Friday, 18 September 2015 12:03 (eight years ago) link

I take it they're not very good on service? My glasses broke bcz I was partying pretty wild with them, had them fixed on warranty by my optician - probably was some fault in construction that made them break so easy, still thought it v good service, no questions were asked.

niels, Friday, 18 September 2015 12:11 (eight years ago) link

how bad is the scratch? they're poor-quality lenses if they got scratched in the case (don't most lenses come with an anti-scratch coating type of thing??). if it's a pretty minor scratch you'll probably find you won't notice it while wearing.

if you have a simple prescription and lenscrafters won't give you a replacement, buy online - i've been wearing various pairs of glasses i bought online for the last 7 years and they're totally fine (just make sure you get the PD number with your prescription).

just1n3, Friday, 18 September 2015 13:23 (eight years ago) link

it's a small scratch but it's right in front of my eye and it's very noticeable when i move my eyes or my head.

welltris (crüt), Friday, 18 September 2015 15:00 (eight years ago) link

posted on men's style thread already but last week i got new frames (the grayish-brown ones in the photo, not the black ones in the back) and i'm digging them, huge improvement from the shitty black wires i've been wearing forever

ils thread for general menswear and men's clothing ish

marcos, Friday, 18 September 2015 16:07 (eight years ago) link

I haven't used lenscrafters in years but I once sat on a pair of glasses and they replaced them.

A long shot but does anyone have any leads on what specs Chris Dercon wears here? They're not quite the trad round like the Oliver Peoples Gregory Peck nor the ones where the arm comes in the middle of the perfect round, it's somewhere in between.

i still love my SEE glasses that kind of look like wood frames w/ a nice matte texture but i am really ready for some circle frames. can't decide whether black wire or silver wire or rimless but i am feeling a perfectly round shape
