Does this just mean some popstar had piano lessons? Got to grade six or something? Cos pretty much EVERY singer who wants to look more talented gets called this, they can't all have gone to conservatories or anything... latest is TATU in Popbitch.

this raises a good question. my ex always said she was a "classicaly trained singer" but what the hell does that mean? she never went to a music school or anything. maybe it's just another name for "thinks i'm good at it"

Hahahaha. I like Andrew W.K's piano playing, btw, it's pretty easy stuff mostly tho

i guess that just means they were taught classical music, as opposed to just buying the sheet music for the latest genesis hit and bashing that out for a while

The piano teaching system's all classical, though. Silly popstars.

what about if they were self-taught? they dont put classically trained then

webber (webber), Thursday, 20 February 2003 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, no. Not everyone does.

i don't believe anyone should call themselves a classically trained anything unless they have at least grade 5.

andrew are you still here? can you get on AIM?

di smith (lucylurex), Friday, 21 February 2003 01:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i agree with the first comment - like carrie brownstein calls herself a 'classically trained pianist' and i think she does it to seem clever - cause she's very into seeming clever (when she took fuckin years to get through a BA and wouldn't manage grad school in a non-hippy college, i bet ). does it mean - as with carrie - that you can listen to other people's songs and rip them off? (she owes everything about her tastes - as does her mate miranda july - to laurie anderson)

what's wrong with being a pop trained something?

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Friday, 28 February 2003 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

what isn't ripped off from someone else though? what do you mean by pop trained? are there places you can go to learn pop? (at my uni we have a rock degree, the bands they churn out are largely horrible, and personally i'd rather be a classically trained pianist than a rock trained guitarist, coming out of our music department).

another thing: i'm someone who hasn't been learning piano for about five years. i got my grade 8 but i doubt i could play at grade 8 level anymore, however all the music theory i have learned has stayed with me and is invaluable to the way i make music now: is it still legit for me to call myself a classically trained pianist?

di smith (lucylurex), Friday, 28 February 2003 04:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I reckon it is, Di! My pianoteacher mum was very impressed. I hope Carrie stops w/that shit, when's the last time she played piano? I've never heard her or anyone else claim that title for her, though. W/pop you learn by doing, maybe.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 28 February 2003 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah i've heard carrie referred to as a "classically trained pianist" quite a lot.

di smith (lucylurex), Friday, 28 February 2003 05:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Who cares if he is classically trained or not. All he does is make dull, mind-numbing cock rock. Its music to crank your mouth and drool to.

Justin Price, Sunday, 2 March 2003 06:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know how to crank my mouth, I still like him
