I hate the Datsuns backlash

So they've got girly hair and thoroughly retrofied riffs and fauning Industry sycophants are laying on the hype with a trowel. So they're no longer underground and 'hip'. So what?

petra jane (petra jane), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 07:21 (twenty-three years ago)

KISS' 'i was made for loving you' was just on Hauraki. I love dumb rock.

petra jane (petra jane), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 07:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't worry I never liked them!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 09:05 (twenty-three years ago)

that's always on hauraki. that and ziggy stardust is all they play, i suspect.

i'm fine with that.

btw if you haven't heard their album, tonamu says it's real good (except heavier than he was expecting?).

webber (webber), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 09:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude it has KEYBOARDS! Good keyboards! It's so '67...The Easybeats revival starts HERE!

petra jane (petra jane), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 10:41 (twenty-three years ago)

What with all the D4 action going on, I don't think I've actually listened to the Datsuns.

Ess Kay (esskay), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 10:59 (twenty-three years ago)

i quite like them and im old compared to you lot.

donna (donna), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I never liked them and they were never underground and hip! They are poseurs they are redundant why not just listen to the bands who did all the the ideas and sounds they do like twenty or thorty years earlier (I can't remember what decade it is, oh yeah, I just remembered but I can't work out the times ps Donna I are 27)

spectra, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i never liked the datsuns either. i'm sick of r'n'r and i'm sick of bands started by boys who just wanna get laid and pretend all the posing and cliches etc etc is "ironic" when you know damn well they dig that shit.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

'Cause the MC5 or KISS or the Stooges or the Kinks or the Buzzcocks don't tend to play crap Hamilton pubs. Also it is possible to strike cliched poses and actually 'dig that shit' - i know cause i've done it. I still can't see anything inherently wrong in liking dumb rock.

petra jane (petra jane), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 04:14 (twenty-three years ago)

when a band that sucks gets real popular you're gonna get a backlash. just get out of the fucking way.

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 06:30 (twenty-three years ago)

that's speaking as a big time fan of sorta kinda "that sort of music" too if you don't know. go see them get blown out of the jet set lounge by tony valens & the incisions TONITE!

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 06:33 (twenty-three years ago)

o c'mon they're ok. not going to make me rush out and blow my tiny budget but they aren't that bad. who cares whether they are original at this point? i just quite like them. never gave a shit whether they were / are hip or underground etc etc, that is pretty much irrelevant really in the face of it.
style-thieves and posing boys yeah well, i still quite like them.

donna (donna), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 07:17 (twenty-three years ago)

isn't it obvious that anything newer is automatically better? fuck, you'd think the past existed or something by listening to all you people.

my name is ess kay and i like house music unironically etc etc etc

Ess Kay (esskay), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 09:09 (twenty-three years ago)

re: datsuns in chch last night, mick elborado said "they weren't as bad as you would've thunk, or even that bad at all" & i sorta respect his opinion so maybe i should've reserved judgment til i seen em live. oh well too late. hey did you know dead moon are coming back to NZ soon? yippeee!

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

they ARE??! *explodes*

petra jane (petra jane), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah that's the word! i'm excited.......hope they make it down here but if they don't i'm up for another trip north.

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

yep I heard about Dead Moon as well

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

petra jane (petra jane), Thursday, 10 October 2002 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

haha i'm glad to see that ess kay has taken over the jess/simon position on i hate everything.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 10 October 2002 02:21 (twenty-three years ago)

ess-kay in sarcasm mode *spontaneously combusts*

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 10 October 2002 02:38 (twenty-three years ago)

There is a guy who works in the KFC in town who is a passable Dolf lookalike. His name is Digby, and he is number two on my stalking list after manicure boy.

Livvie, Thursday, 10 October 2002 07:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooooh he sounds like a catch! Looks like a Datsun, works in KFC... do you have his number for me?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 10 October 2002 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha i am so glad that andrew has taken over the ess kay pos'n on IHE

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Friday, 11 October 2002 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

He looks like a Datsun crossed with that chick off the playstation ad with massive square eyes. I will ask him for his number for you next time I go in there for my popcorn chicken. You wanna date manicure boy too? He wears tight lurex tshirts and works at a manicurist!

Livvie, Friday, 11 October 2002 08:19 (twenty-three years ago)

datsuns were a good sturdy car.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 12 October 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

i dunno this KFC guy sounds too perfect

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Sunday, 13 October 2002 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

OMG, Matt Datsun's grown a moustache now?

petra jane (petra jane), Monday, 14 October 2002 04:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah he is pretty hott and all the boy racers girlfriends that go to KFC love him. In fact I think soon he will be granted the name "Hott Digby".

Livvie, Tuesday, 15 October 2002 08:09 (twenty-three years ago)

i like kfc.

webber (webber), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 07:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Me too. We had an ultimate quarterpack today.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 08:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard if you buy three you get one free.

rainy (rainy), Thursday, 17 October 2002 01:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes! And we are now ready to get our free one. We have been eating a lot of it.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 17 October 2002 08:30 (twenty-three years ago)

can I please share, I love that shit. (sorry i know this is a board for haters)

rainy (rainy), Thursday, 17 October 2002 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

rainy it sounds really weird when you say shit like "shit"! is that the 1st time you ever swore on the internet?

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Friday, 18 October 2002 10:06 (twenty-three years ago)

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Friday, 18 October 2002 10:07 (twenty-three years ago)

hey can anyone lend me $200 so i can buy the datsun sw around the corner from my house, it's really cool!

calum, Friday, 18 October 2002 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i swear on this board cuz it's for haters

rainy (rainy), Saturday, 19 October 2002 04:46 (twenty-three years ago)

the only difference between the datsunms and rubicon is that rubicon appeal to 14 year old girls, while the datsuns appeal to 14 year old boys.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 19 October 2002 04:52 (twenty-three years ago)

This board was mostly to meant to be about sarcasm and cheerful whining, not actual HATRED. So dumb rock, has anyone here heard the whole Andrew WK album? Cos I love all the songs I've heard so far, and he has a bitchin name.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 20 October 2002 09:22 (twenty-three years ago)

on no arga warga i'm simultaneously a 14yr old boy & a 14yr old girl i'm melting i'm melting waddaworld etc etc (apologies to mark s & so on)

(actually i don't actually like either of those bands but i MIGHT - haha substitute betchadupa & d4 respectively & it still works, sorta!)

also the only difference between sleater-kinney & beck is that one appeals to male rockcrits who think music ended 20 years ago & the other appeals to male rockcrits who think music ended 10 year ago.

(andrew i haven't heard the whole album but i'll be downloading tracks until i hit a dud)

Ess Kay (esskay), Sunday, 20 October 2002 09:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think music has ever existed

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 20 October 2002 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually ok, but I like S-K a lot. They're a superb rock/pop band, much as I occasionally wish my tastes were more "now" or "hip" that's about my favourite music, they're a great proponent, I like them. A lot. As I just said. Besides, aren't you referring to Greil Marcus? He's a fuckwit. He doesn't even like the Fall, as far as I know, so his opinions on music are worthless.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 20 October 2002 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

He doesn't even like the Fall, as far as I know, so his opinions on music are worthless.

what a retard! (i'm not being sarcastic, sorry, i GENUINELY hate greil marcus) i like real hate, i hate sarcasm. should i fuck off?

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 20 October 2002 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarcasm can be bitterly hateful. Feel free to read it that way. What don't you like about it? And are you actually saying you think Greil's intellectually disabled in some way? Since yr not being sarcastic...

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 20 October 2002 10:31 (twenty-three years ago)

it has the potential to be witty. yes he is.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 20 October 2002 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

the only difference between the datsunms and rubicon is that rubicon appeal to 14 year old girls, while the datsuns appeal to 14 year old boys.
Yeah - I'm a 14 yr old girl and I LOVE Rubicon. Or um I would if thinking about Paul Reid didn't make me want to vomit.

Livvie, Monday, 21 October 2002 08:34 (twenty-three years ago)

oh sorry livvie. i sorta meant thats who they are trying to appeal to. i didn't mean to offemd you, as obviously you have taste.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 21 October 2002 09:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah I realised after I wrote that you might think that you had offended me. I wasn't offended, just using yr comment as an excuse to point out how much Rubicon suck. So do most 14 yr old girls, for that matter.

Livvie, Tuesday, 22 October 2002 08:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Rainy, if yr ever up here or I'm down there (me and Elisabeth want to come down sometime soonish, I think, though other plans have sort of gotten in the way for now) do you want to get some KFC? Because YES it is GOOD!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Datsuns played with Von Bondies, so theyre okay in my book.

David Allen, Tuesday, 22 October 2002 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew, hell yeah!

rainy (rainy), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 04:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's get a FOOTY FEAST! We can play rugby afterwards.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah! (but we must pretend to play ironically)

rainy (rainy), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

The ball isn't inflated when they give it to you, I just remembered, so it would have to be pretty ironic rugby unless someone has a bike pump handy.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

is rubicon in dunedin?, because I think I saw Paul from it on the street. Immediately afterwards I saw this children's ride that you sit in, but it was a slice of pizza or a piece of pie or something. It seemed wrong.

spectra, Thursday, 24 October 2002 03:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Spectra, have seen that ride! And I also saw a kid screaming hysterically, "I want to have a ride on the Pizza!!!!".

Rubicon was in town with Tadpole and Concord Dawn. i think I might hate them all, but I have a had a few drinks.

Also i have seen that TV ad with the bone on the bus. it sux. i hate it.

rainy (rainy), Thursday, 24 October 2002 04:47 (twenty-three years ago)

my band played with rubicon once, did i tell that story about 10000000 times yet already? it was a bummer experience. ( i was tripping!)

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Thursday, 24 October 2002 05:55 (twenty-three years ago)

as related here

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 03:50 (twenty-three years ago)

btw i can't see anything better about the datsuns than rubicon on any level. rubicon might have better lyrics.

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey the datsuns are better looking. They have better clothes. I don't know what their lyrics say. They have a better name. That is three levels so far.

treena meldicott, Tuesday, 29 October 2002 04:38 (twenty-three years ago)

by YOUR pitiful archaic numerical system, sure it is.

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

the datsuns are just like devo, except (sadly) not as nerdy. though they do sing about an effect pedal in harmonic generator (on the album).

if you played harmonic generator and told me it was devo, I would probably belive you, for about 10 minunits at least.

rubicon are crap.

Dominic, Wednesday, 30 October 2002 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i know they are

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

devo vs the datsuns? sheesh! thats like, fukkin, mary timony vs avril levigne!

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 02:46 (twenty-three years ago)

seven months pass...
Besides, aren't you referring to Greil Marcus? He's a fuckwit. He doesn't even like the Fall, as far as I know, so his opinions on music are worthless.

now that's just silly.

(i idolize j.d. salinger more than anyone, like, ever, but if i refused to acknowledge the existence of anyone who didn't like him i'd never be able to have an actual real conversation with ANYONE!)

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 04:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm well aware Marcus exists... I don't like his writing at all, either. He likes S-K, he's an ok guy, and I was exaggerating just a little.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 11:28 (twenty-three years ago)

my hatred of GM has softened into a simple wish that he would stop writing about sleater-kinney.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 11:45 (twenty-three years ago)

rock critics have to all write about sleater-kinney, they're "the only band that matters!"

duane, Saturday, 14 June 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

or at least that's what i've read

duane, Saturday, 14 June 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

thats so wrong, the only band that matters is the futurians.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 14 June 2003 06:04 (twenty-two years ago)

they were very good last night weren't they

duane, Saturday, 14 June 2003 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

woo woo

ducklingmonster, Sunday, 15 June 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i've still never heard the datsuns.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 15 June 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)
