CAss (CAss), Thursday, 15 April 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i like a lot of riot grrrl stuff, particularly bratmobile, heavens to betsy and bikini kill. i also heart the buzzcocks, wire, the slits, x ray spex, the ramones, patti smith and the new york dolls (what i have heard of them).

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 15 April 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to say the Slits' Peel Session record is still pretty much my fav PUNK record (straightforward punk, y'know), by miles. Of course I barely count anything as punk or else maybe the Subway Sect's early stuff and the Sex Pistols' record'd beat it

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i just wish they'd called it something else, "punk" is such a stupid name.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

why is punk a stupid name?

CAss (CAss), Sunday, 2 May 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey CAss, can you tell me what punk is? What bands are punk?

Livvie (Livvie), Monday, 3 May 2004 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

it sounds lame and trivial. it also emphasizes the bratty, snotty, cartoonishly teenager-ish side of the music/scene/culture, which i don't find very useful. (of course i hate the term "post-punk" even more, as it implies that "punk" was something childish that ought to be transcended by BIG IMPORTANT IDEAS) i find virtually all definitions of "punk" to be rather limited, and i especially hate it when people confuse it with the "DIY ethic" - punk isn't about "staying true to yourself" or some such nonsense, it's about selling out, self-loathing and contradiction, otherwise it wouldn't matter at all. (and i'm not even sure it DOES matter - one of the important things about punk is the way it toys with its own importance, with the possibility that it might be useless irredeemable trash)

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 3 May 2004 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i shouldn't post on punk threads, it immediately turns me back into a frothing-at-th'-mouth storm-the-bastille (tho not yet debord-READING haha) 17-year-old lunatic. the funny thing is these days i'm much more inclined to listen to, like, julianna hatfield or prince. haha.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 3 May 2004 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

hey justyn its funny you find other people's definitions of punk to be limited, cos i find your definition of punk to be rather limiting! why should it only have one meaning? why can't it mean a bunch of different stuff to different people - or even the same person?

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't say it couldn't.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

it's about selling out, self-loathing and contradiction was not intended to be a complete definition, sorry if that wasn't clear. i also didn't intend a slam on the DIY ethic, it was just badly worded.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh! How punk!!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Aww I don't listen to any of those bands, I guess I'm not very punk.

Livvie (Livvie), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I like some old Misfits songs Ok enough

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Dirty Harry's got the best definition of "punk". It's, like, you've just fired off five shots or maybe six and now you're looking down the barrel of this badass cop's magnum .44 and you can't remember if you've got a bullet left or not, and do you feel lucky? Well do you, punk?

Minty (Minty), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess post-punk's what you get if you try it on and don't have a bullet left after all. Bleeeaow!

Minty (Minty), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Tho I could see how you might find this definition limiting if, you know, you don't have easy access to large amounts of badass cops and firearms.

Minty (Minty), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

We actually talk about this today, don't think there was any consensus though and I'm kinda too lazy for a serious answer.

Livvie (Livvie), Thursday, 6 May 2004 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Talked, obv.

Livvie (Livvie), Thursday, 6 May 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Punk rock sucks above even "Lady Ms. Lurex".And this I definetly mean.......Whahahahah!!!!!!!!!

The Leader (Adrian McCoy), Friday, 7 May 2004 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i don't really care enough about the definition of punk to argue about it.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Friday, 7 May 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

you dont have to tell everyone that, just dont write about it
