Whoopsy daisy

I was speaking with a friend of mine last night, and they were saying that NYC clubs are starting to book shows based on a band's 'myspace friends'.

It makes sense from a business perspective. But thinking of all those mediocre, weird haircut bands with 20K+ myspace friends edging more interesting fair makes me die a little. Then again, in the grand scheme of things it will all come out in the wash. Really good stuff will always be really good stuff, and a 'myspace friends' page will reflect that. I'm not trying to make a judgement call on any of that.

as a promoter myself, im quite wary of booking anyone based on how many myspace friends they have. people have a tendency to be friends with anyone/anything on myspace. i'd like to think that good promoters may use myspace a research tool with limited purpose and that they should really take a better look in-depth by checking out the bands press/accomplishments, going to their shows [if possible], etc. if it's a younger band a promoter's trying to develop, its important to research them and figure out where they fit in the existing musical universe. [ie, post-punk bands on Banjo Night, etc]

these days, im even wary of the purpose of having a myspace account for plain parade. we have 600 folks on it, consisting of people who are interested in our shows, local bands, touring bands who have played with us/that we like, labels and other associated folks that make up the plain parade extended family. [we had our account for a couple years, strangely enough, have turned down more friends requests than accepted them] and despite the number, i seriously have to wonder if it really works, especially when 20 people show up to something [like they did last night - of course, im also aware there were competing shows last night due to pre-sxsw craziness].

don't get me wrong, myspace has turned me onto some cool bands and its great for bands who cant build their own websites [but they really, really should 'cause mypsace is ugly no matter how much you edit it] but the add-centric aspect of it doesn't bode well.

on that note:

sorry, i am so so so sick right now - that ie was meant to explain something a promoter shouldn't do.

I can't get over how fucking ugly the thing is. I mean, MySpace is a big franchise, people. Surely they could hire someone with a modicum of web-design standards?

I can deal with not complying to web standards, but for fuck's sake it's the worst user interface on the planet. Friendster just eats it for lunch in that department... I finally got on MySpace recently, and I could barely get a modicum of information up there before I just wanted to beat the designer with a tire iron.

I spent a couple years as a die-hard Friendster partisan, but over the last year or so Friendster has aggressively fucked up their own design while MySpace has retained its original level of cluttered ugliness. So now they're both hideous. Myspace takes less time to load, but Friendster understands the hy-tech concept of "alphabetization" so it's kind of a draw except nobody hangs out on Friendster anymore and Myspace lets you do the music thing, so....
