myspace music blah

How does one weed out the wheat from the chaff? I got a coupla friend requests today - one was an awesome corpse-paint clad gothick, the other a "southern rocker". I'm guessing that they noticed our name on other bands friend lists - karda estra (who are serioulsy fucking gr8, btw) for the former, kings x for the latter. The goth had s.th like 26,000 friends! wtf. I'll have to get some music up, that'll scare them off probably, heh.

Is this thing any good for something other than 1/whining in yr blog section about how you kept fucking up that guitar part (a temptation hard to resist) &(mainly) 2/checking out music made by friends on mail lists yr on?

I've been ignoring myspace as much as possible so I'm not help, but I have a question too....is it worth making a page for my band if I'm going to ignore all of the blog/contacts/friending stuff? I.e. just to have one for the music player and links to buy stuff.

There's really nothing to lose in having a myspace page, and there's nothing to lose in a band having as many friends as possible. I just blindly accept anyone, unless they do something annoying like post an advertisement in the "comments" section -- which has only happened once or twice.

Yes, it's definitely worth setting up a page -- I often direct people there instead of our web site because it's so easy to use and so easy for us to update.

YES. It takes maybe 15 minutes to set up a page and put a few songs up. Without trying, you will have people finding your page and listening to your songs and wanting to be yr myspace palz!

As well as all that, it leads to the occasion offer to tour/submit tracks/release etc... though for us that only started to happen when we'd built it up a bit. Our strategy has been not to add people, but just wait and see who adds you - then make an effort and actually say hello to them.

For o.s. touring, it must be useful surely if you want to hook up with people in various places, sleep on their floor, etc - and return the favour later.

I think it's great - the only webby thing I've done that's really lead to work and even a small amount of $$. Many, many more people visit our myspace site than our website. It's been a lot more useful and cheap for obtaining gigs than S*nicbids too, so far anyway. The latter seemsto me at the moment to be an exercise in paying to be spammed by various festivals around the world, most of which are obviously inappropriate for the style we do.

Myspace flippin rules
I've made connections with radio people
people buy my CD
some loser wants to put me in the soundtrack of his movie
people say my crap is their favorite song
I found a girl who might go on tour with me
I found awesome bands I never knew about like "AIDS Against You"
and "Pants Pants Pants"
It keeps track of all your shows!
And then people see your shows and go to them
Also I found Nomi Malone yesterday and it was good times

Sorry, I've had way too much caffiene today. Everything I wrote is true, but it doesn't take into account how annoying and obnoxious the format of myspace is.

Sandy Games (Sandy Games), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 02:59 (eighteen years ago) link

The layout is quite clumsy, but you get used to it, like a strangely designed house. On the positive side, it's opportunity-rich for obscure artists in a variety of ways. I'm not so sure how useful it is for non-musicians.

Were Myspace to incorporate pay-for-download, that could be very interesting.

ratty, Wednesday, 4 January 2006 04:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, there's no harm in doing it and LOTS of potential gain. We had a couple random people come to our show in Pittsburgh b/c they were Myspace friends with us.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 10:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Not to oversell my enthusiasm or anything, cos I sort of agree with Sandy's comments anyway, but it reminds me a little of the good ol' industrial tape exchange days of the early 80's - especially when you hook up with people and start swapping music, artwork, fanzines etc (which I'm doing right now, with a guy in Istanbul). So there's that hobbyist angle too.

I usually check out their profile and see if they look remotely like a band that might be in somewhat the same "realm" as us, then I'll add anyone....I never add those LA goth metal bands that have 10,000 friends....some Vegas-based Hootie type band request our friendship like 3 time....I kept turning them down...I don't like that spamming crap.

I was speaking with a friend of mine last night, and they were saying that NYC clubs are starting to book shows based on a band's 'myspace friends'.

It makes sense from a business perspective. But thinking of all those mediocre, weird haircut bands with 20K+ myspace friends edging more interesting fair makes me die a little. Then again, in the grand scheme of things it will all come out in the wash. Really good stuff will always be really good stuff, and a 'myspace friends' page will reflect that. I'm not trying to make a judgement call on any of that.

The myspace band phenomenon looks to me like an industry transformation on the same scale as say, the debut of MTV. I really think it has that much momentum, for good and for ill.

Note: I am on myspace, but none of my music projects are, simply because I don't really see any need (as of yet) for them to have a myspace page. I'm going to go through and start adding you folks though.

A cursory trawl through some random myspace accounts makes me realise that there are a hell of a lot of goths around nowadays.

Yes! I've had a couple of other goth band friend requests, but they had upwards of 2000 friends already! I dunno if that's enohg evidence to start drawing correlations between "goths" and "friend collectors". I still can't get over the first goth boi, who I approved, having 26,000 + friends! It's good having him on the list b/c a/he looks great in his corpsepaint and b/his first song starts with the words "in the deep dark dungeon of my soul", which is obviously the best thing ever. (it is actually prety good, synthpop-ish)

The best music of any band linked to us is:

1/karda estra, who are kind of gothy/early genesis-ish & not 1,000,000 miles removed from the likes of DcD or Eleven Shadows type music:

http://www.myspace.com/kardaestra

and

2/Seth Nemec, who is an analog synth manufacturer - he has this track "demo 1" which is this perfect jolly early mute-style instrumental

http://www.myspace.com/sethnemec

ours is

http://www.myspace.com/vietgrove

but I haven't got any music up yet. A job for this weekend, perhaps.

Then again, in the grand scheme of things it will all come out in the wash. Really good stuff will always be really good stuff, and a 'myspace friends' page will reflect that. I'm not trying to make a judgement call on any of that.

as a promoter myself, im quite wary of booking anyone based on how many myspace friends they have. people have a tendency to be friends with anyone/anything on myspace. i'd like to think that good promoters may use myspace a research tool with limited purpose and that they should really take a better look in-depth by checking out the bands press/accomplishments, going to their shows [if possible], etc. if it's a younger band a promoter's trying to develop, its important to research them and figure out where they fit in the existing musical universe. [ie, post-punk bands on Banjo Night, etc]

these days, im even wary of the purpose of having a myspace account for plain parade. we have 600 folks on it, consisting of people who are interested in our shows, local bands, touring bands who have played with us/that we like, labels and other associated folks that make up the plain parade extended family. [we had our account for a couple years, strangely enough, have turned down more friends requests than accepted them] and despite the number, i seriously have to wonder if it really works, especially when 20 people show up to something [like they did last night - of course, im also aware there were competing shows last night due to pre-sxsw craziness].

don't get me wrong, myspace has turned me onto some cool bands and its great for bands who cant build their own websites [but they really, really should 'cause mypsace is ugly no matter how much you edit it] but the add-centric aspect of it doesn't bode well.

on that note:

I can deal with not complying to web standards, but for fuck's sake it's the worst user interface on the planet. Friendster just eats it for lunch in that department... I finally got on MySpace recently, and I could barely get a modicum of information up there before I just wanted to beat the designer with a tire iron.

I spent a couple years as a die-hard Friendster partisan, but over the last year or so Friendster has aggressively fucked up their own design while MySpace has retained its original level of cluttered ugliness. So now they're both hideous. Myspace takes less time to load, but Friendster understands the hy-tech concept of "alphabetization" so it's kind of a draw except nobody hangs out on Friendster anymore and Myspace lets you do the music thing, so....
