Playing Bass on Guitar Tube Amp, Can i mod it to be a full-out bass amp?

So if you werent involved in this before, help me out. I have a pretty much unique Fender Something or other Tube amp (((it was a limited run amp, Made in U.S.A. baby))) Its a 40 Watt tube amp. Its got a 12 inch Jensen Speaker.

Before I was wondering if I could play bass on it without really ruining it eventually. I've given up on that dream...

I'm pretty much married to my amp folks, I love it.

I dont need this amp for live performances right now, we're always typically supplied with amps that are more show worthy.

So, I'll be playing a few local festivals(hippie revolution in my town), but we're supplied with a Cab, that means I wont have to go live with it for now. So now the main question is....

Can I be heard over drums without ruining the speaker playing bass?

And is it really not possible to mod the amp to play bass like I new speaker?! (I wont give up that dream, even the cosmetics of this amp are just amazing)

Could I send it away to get it rebuilt/converted? I have a bond with that amp. I can't explain it.

I'd be willing to lay down like 250-300 and maybe 400 to get make it into a full out bass amp dude. (((I just got a sweet job at a camp, 7.50 an hour 8-4:30 Mon.-Fri. for about the whole summer, So I'm gonna be rollin the dough)))

Just buy a bass amp. Even if you use it as a head plugging it into a bass cab, it will be underpowered. It might work OK to record setting something like that up, but that is about it.

If you're so in love with your amp, why do you insist that it change to be what you want? Love it for what it is, man.

At this point, this question and the answer to it should probably be in the FAQ.

That's awesome, Mike -- cherish it. Buy your bass amp now, young man, for one day $1275 may begin to sound like barely enough to pay rent, pay debt, and eat beans.

Let me try this again.

I wasn't ignoring you bro, thats where you're wrong chief.

The old question was, if a bass is playable and safe on a tube guitar amp.

the new question is primarily wether I can mod an amp man w/e

Ok, to answer your new question:

NO. BUY A BASS AMP. THE MODS YOU ARE HOPING FOR ARE UNAVAILABLE BECAUSE WHENEVER SOMEONE THINKS OF DOING IT, EVERYONE WITH INFORMATION TO SHARE SAYS "NO. BUY A BASS AMP."

Hope that clears things up for you.

Mike, why do I get the feeling that you've already tried to play your bass through your guitar amp, it didn't go as planned (you blew the speaker), and now you're looking for validation/repair tips?

naus (Robert T), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 02:09 (twelve years ago) Permalink

nope, I can photograph the amp and the speaker for you bro, its quite well. You think I would risk that with my amp that I love so dearly? You've got to be crazy to think I would even play on the amp if I was worried about damaging it

200 watts of Europower. 'Course, it'll run ya about 10 Euros per watt...

You can use any guitar amp as a bass amp. It will simply sound like shit if it's a combo. Big tube guitar heads make fine bass amps -- IF YOU ARE USING BASS CABINETS.

Hey i told my dad to buy a 40 watt bass amp off ebay for me.. he then saw a 50 watt guitar amp for 10 dollars more thought it was a bass amp and bought it instead... after searching around aparently the thing that get's wrecked ultimately is the speaker.. so i was wondering if or how much a basss speaker would cost to get put into this amp..
or alternitavly i could just sell the guitar amp and buy a bass amp...

STOP RIGHT THERE MAN! I started this thing a long as time ago, theres no way out, most of the people are idiots on this thing. And there is no solution to putting a bass speaker in, its not possible, as for playing bass on a guitar amp, ehhhh, I've been jamming with my guitar amp playing bass for the past month, its insanely quiet and its a 40 watt amp, the speaker hasnt blown, turning on the drive channel to get more volume helps, but it sucks cause bass pickups sound like junk overdriven and they pick up every little sound of your fingers against the strings, EVERYTHING

i just came back to this thread from so damn long ago.

Mike Lamie (Mike Lamie), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 01:05 (twelve years ago) Permalink

Change the speakers or cab.
Anything else is an alteration of the Center frequencies of the EQ. Stupid expensive.
If you have a loop, run a boost in there. Many amps' preamps saturate too fast for you to even get the full rated wattage!
40 watts isn't enough to get a bass over a loud drummer. You'd need an 810 to get close, and it still won't work.
Buy a bass amp, or at least a bigger guitar head.

I myself run a bass(VI-type, so it NEEDS to be a compromise) though a guitar preamp. It has alot of bass inherently on the clean channel, though so that's....yeah.

If you find a fende M-80 guitar amp, it's a great bass amp that would need a bass cab.

Mike do you understand the PHYSICS of SOUND? Every SOUND has a FREQUENCY. The BASS frequency is LOWER than that of a GUITAR. A bass guitar...BASS guitar...makes a sound with a LOWER frequency than that of a GUITAR. A guitar amp is made to generate sounds in certain FREQUENCIES, which may overlap but don't encompass those frequencies generated by a BASS guitar. You have three options:

1. Do NOT play the lowest TWO OCTAVES on the bass
2. plug your BASS into a BASS amp
3. JUST DON'T PLAY BASS BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 01:48 (twelve years ago) Permalink

TWO octaves?
HUH?
No offense, but
A. A bass is ONE octave lower.
B. A guitar amp WILL reproduce the frequencies produced by a bass, but the speakers won't. The EQ just won't work well.
C. Yes, he's an ass.

i do play bass, quite well too. I just have never decided to understand the way shit works cause I dont need to. thats why I have you guys. That whole sound wave tip is the most sense i've heard.

Either way, under the pressure to jam with my band I've been using my 45 watt epi guitar amp on the drive channel so it will be loud, with low gain to keep it clear but boosted. Its alright, but it is quiet enough.

its funny though, now when I turn off the amp, it takes longer for it to shut down, and when I plug in my guitar to it, it sometimes gets weird and the speaker will fade in and out and get weird but its sort of funny

It's the speakers that bear the pain of bass.

I got a '68 Bassman head now. Its really better on a guitar than a bass, but it's got a grind to it that's cool. With the right fuzz you can sound like Cactus on that head, which is pretty cool.
