So I had to pick up a new footswitch for my amp today and almost walked out with a newish Firebird VII that had been marked down 60%. I'm not really in the market for one, but I've always kinda wanted one - blame Phil Manzanera and Brian Jones.

Anyway, I haven't been following Gibson at all and have no idea what I would have been getting into (I didn't buy it, and am still going to get that AC15 amp)

Terrible for the price.
Basically if it looks like a decent guitar at first glance it gets out of the factory as an 'A.'

There are some gems that get out, but they range from unplayable to "Hey this is nice." and they all cost too much.

I'd go to a custom builder and pay a little more for a copy.

I think it is like any company, Gibson make some good ones, some bad ones and most need some tweaking after they are bought. I think most of the time you are better off finding one used. I've gotten a couple of great Gibsons very cheap used, both needed a bit of work but they are great now.

Firebirds are cool looking guitars, but those tuners are real funky. The couple of times I have gotten to pick around on one those tuners twist my head around.

I must have missed when they became majority shareholders in Onkyo and TEAC.

Gibson said it has reached an agreement with holders of more than 69% of its senior secured notes due in 2018 and shareholders that lets it continue to operate

... nice?
