What do you sound like on Nu-ILX?

I made this track this evening using Audacity and Reason as a metronome. I've hardly ever recorded music with guitar and vocals, tending to do more electronic based stuff. It's a shame about the hiss, and the fact I can't play guitar or sing very well but I like the song I think.

Pointers and constructive criticism very welcome.

Now what do you sound like?

I've been working on some new songs tonight, but nothing seems to be working right now and I've got to buy a pack of smokes before I shoot myself.

Andi Mags, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 07:11 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Huh. I'm listening to Spiders right now, and I have to say, very Barrett-y. Your sound quality's better than mine tho (no surprise as I use garageband).

I posted something up mere minutes before old ilx went down the swanney. I described it as "po-faced proto-80's nonsense" and I stand by that.

Having practically clean, loud-in-the-mix vocals is a bit of a novelty for me but its something I'm sticking to for a bit to see what happens.

Lynskey, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 12:05 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Lung Vomit and Monitor Nucleosis are my personal favorites.
Opossum is the most accessable.

I'll be doing some covers soon. I need to get the sheet music for one of those songs...but that's another thread altogether

I was listening to Carl Craig's "Televised Green Smoke" and I wanted to make Stevie Wonder's "My Cheri Amour" sound like that. No vocals yet because I feel inadequate to sing Stevie songs I can't be bothered right now.

Not very long really. The odd post here and there (about three, actually) on the old board. I might participate a bit more here, but if I had any sense I'd try and curtail internetage at work, rather than increase it.

Also, Jona, are Kicker not still going?

I don't think so, although I'm not totally sure. As far as I know Phil's moving across the water soon, so he's doing this Wooden Coin stuff with Laura from Harper Lee (and me, occasionally), which might get released somehow, but I think my participation brought about the death of Kicker.

I should try joining bands I don't like, and see if I have the same anti-success effect.

I'm digging Rashomon a bunch. The rocking part in "Branded To Kill" needs to be like 3 times longer though. When playing live, make that happen. ok sport? thanks.

four weeks pass...

i've been rehearsing new songs with a band and it's been really exciting and also scary (first time leading a band). it's interesting how knowing you'll have to play everything live changes the writing process. i've been listening to a lot of alvvays and tom petty recently, trying to simplify things a little bit. this is just a demo but one of those where i spent way the hell too long working on it. i'm pumped to eventually play it all really loudly with real people!

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 21:11 (three months ago) Permalink

nope, or at least not yet! i'm not playing them - sticking to guitar and keyboard. it's still really early going with the whole thing, and at this point i'm still figuring out how to play my own parts. it's really weird to learn how to play your own songs, but even when i recorded old demos i'd just learn it well enough to record and then forget, or programmed them in the first place and never really thought about what scales or chords were being used. so basically i'm doofusing it up left and right

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 19:37 (three months ago) Permalink

yeah it's not terrible. it gets drowned out pretty quickly -- i was playing someone else's kit and wasn't used to the way the snare turned on/off or i would have turned it off in the beginning

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 19:39 (three months ago) Permalink

Lechera, I like your stuff. 'Watery' reminds me of a more clattery variation on the early modular synth stuff that Sam Prekop was doing with the Sea and Cake: 'Early Chicago' and 'The Sewing Machine'

I was using the Electro-Harmonix Freeze Sound Retainer as a crutch. It was just too applicable for the kind of music I want to make and it was starting to make its way into pretty much every recording I made in almost the same exact context. Even though it was exactly the thing I wanted it for, I became too dependent on it. And, I don't know, maybe I'm a glutton for self-punishment, but I got rid of it. Instead of just having that magic button to press for instant ambience, I'm making myself try to rely on stacking my two delays (Carbon Copy Deluxe and FlashbackX4) for that sound. Ultimately, even though the Freeze got me where I wanted to be, I do prefer the more natural sound of two (or three) stacked delays. So anyway, here's one of the first recordings I did after the Freeze had made its exit. I'm pretty happy with the direction I'm heading now with my effects chain. I downsized considerably over the past few weeks from about twenty five pedals to about twelve (not counting tuner or loop station). I would like to get another envelope filter / auto-wah type pedal again, but I really need to research it pretty heavily, as my wants for that type of effect are pretty specific.

Anyway, good thread. Always like to read and listen.

New collab track, sort of ambient dancehall: https://hushhushrecords.bandcamp.com/track/chants-x-korma-sleepless-rhythm

This was fun because the other producer wrote the main loop as a demo, so I just got to arrange it into a full track and only think about sounds & layers. I wish I could work like that all the time (also had only one day to get it in, which helped with committing to decisions).
