Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just recently seen Jia Zhangke's Unknown Pleasures which would now place at #6 on my 2000's list. It's the best film of the year!

Josh Timmermann (Josh Timmermann), Friday, 8 August 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I said I wanted to spice things up around ILF, so here goes nothing [note - criticism here is heavily personally biased and is a criticism only of the movies, not the people who chose them]:

The Piano: I need to watch this again. I really wasn't totally impressed with it the one time I saw it. Giving children Oscars, though, should be banned. Campion did secure a spot on my list, though.
The House of Mirth: Huh? It just seemed so de rigeur period piece, with absolutely lifeless Eric Stoltz and fair to middling Gillian Anderson. If she wants to break out of Dana Scully typecasting, GA needs to pick up something more over the top.
Pulp Fiction: I have Tarantino issues. See the Kill Bill thread on ILE.
Fargo: Decent movie, but as a Coen fan, it's one of my least favorite of theirs.
Almost Famous: Not a bad film, but for Crowe, it's mediocre.
Gangs of New York: See above.
Adaptation: This is why pomo must die.
Rushmore: Another film I didn't like in the theater that I think needs a second viewing.
Punch-Drunk Love: I admire its boldness, but I can't honestly say I felt much for it either way, despite my undying love for PTA.
Donnie Darko: A good movie lost in its own hype.
Pi: See above.

Girolamo Savonarola, Friday, 8 August 2003 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I mostly agree with you, on the films I've seen. Pulp Fiction is a nice film, but overrated amongst fanboys. Fargo is definitely not the best Coen brothers flick of the nineties (that's Big Lebowski). The Coen brothers themselves are quite ovverrated; technically, they're fine filmmakers, but most of their films are pastiches made with an ironic distance, so it's really hard to care about them (Hudsucker Proxy being the most notorious example).

Almost Famous is good fun, but nothing particular about it; the plot is quite cliched, but having some great scenes saves the film. Rushmore is also a fine comedy, but I got the feeling it tried to be something deeper than it actually was. Donnie Darko's great, but it would've been brilliant without that sci-fi mumbo jumbo. Pi is the only film about which I disagree with you; I think it's an almost perfect movie, and I didn't even know it had a hype (here in Finland it didn't).

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 8 August 2003 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Donnie was too much of a shmuck to care about, so I didn't care for Darko at all. Ditto with Pi.

My post gives me an idea for a new thread.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 8 August 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually the thread I had in mind is not worth posting.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 8 August 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Almost Famous: Not a bad film, but for Crowe, it's mediocre.

Um, yeah, it's no Vanilla Sky, that's for sure.

Rushmore, well, I like J. Rosenbaum's line: "about as close to 90s Lubitsch as we deserve to get."

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 8 August 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

90s:
1) Fargo
2) Henry Fool
3) Chungking Express
4) Praise
5) Schizopolis
6) Tribulation 99: Alien Anomalies Under America
7) Lone Star
8) Seven Songs From The Tundra
9) Bottle Rocket
10) Glengarry Glen Ross

00s:
1) American Splendor
2) In Praise of Love
3) George Washington
4) Benjamin Smoke
5) Yi Yi
6) Wendigo
7) In The Mood For Love
8) 24 Hour Party People
9) The Grey Zone
10) You Can Count On Me

Well, obviously I disagree with the criticisms of Fargo. It's simply a great, classic tragedy with tremendous uber-subtle performances, beautiful cinematography, beautiful writing... it's just one of those films that I could watch forever. I do agree that it falls outside the rest of the Coen Bros. canon, but for all the right reasons.

i wonder if, when we close the book on our young century, we will still be able to call ready to rumble the greatest?

a spectator bird (a spectator bird), Monday, 5 June 2006 20:33 (twenty years ago)

All movies will be judged on how closely they stick to the ideals evinced in Ready To Rumble.

Before the century is out, several films will contain pull-quotes from syndicated reviewers saying they "out-Ready to Rumble Ready to Rumble!!!"

Nice list imo.

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 12 August 2010 07:36 (fifteen years ago)

I've posted these lists on my site:

'90s

1. Boogie Nights
2. Goodfellas
3. Miller's Crossing
4. Crumb
5. Smoke
6. Reservoir Dogs
7. Boyz n the Hood
8. The Silence of the Lambs
9. Short Cuts
10. Clockers

'00s

1. Spellbound
2. Zodiac
3. Lost in Translation
4. The Heart of the Game
5. The Squid and the Whale
6. Elephant
7. No Direction Home: Bob Dylan
8. No Country for Old Men
9. Ghost World
10. Andy Warhol: A Documentary Film

The '00s list was done only a few months ago, so that stands. The '90s list goes back a decade, so I'd want to revise that. Rushmore, Jackie Brown, and Fargo would be on there, maybe also Menace II Society; I'd knock off The Silence of The Lambs and Clockers to start, not sure what else.
