1981: probably Raiders of the Lost Ark
1982: The Ballad of Narayama (the best Shohei Imamura movie I'll ever see)
1983: Trading Places (the most vindictive Capra movie ever made. God bless John Hughes.)
1984: Stop Making Sense
1985: Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters
1986: Peking Opera Blues (though only with the awful subtitles. "It's too crowdy in here!")
1987: Red Sorghum (although I get the sneaking suspicion that this would be Where Is The Friend's House if I could ever find it to rent)
1988: The Last Temptation of Christ
1989: City of Sadness (although it's hard to vote against Field of Dreams. And Dekalog was made for TV, so I don't count it.)

the 80's is probably the worst decade of movies that i have seen film from. so of my favorites include
