One of the Voice critics had the Nick Drake VW commercial in her top-10 a couple of years. Pretty good defense, too, as I recall.

Yes. One German critic pointed out at the time that Songs from the Second Floor was nothing more than a collection of Andersson's commercials, only without the product. Which isn't entirely off the money as far as the tone is concerned.

Or promo directors? Mark Romanek, Spike Jonze, McG, etc. Am I the only one who likes Michel Gondry's ads/promos but is somehow wary/suspicious of his upcoming film work?

the vice-versa question is good though!! (esp.if you replace "allowed to" with "commended for" or something to that effect) (or even better: "should commercials be paid attention to just because they are 8mins long and directed by John SLOW-MOTION-PIGEONS Woo??")
