What've you got? Where did you get it? How much did it cost? Have you had any trouble with it?

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a cheap Philips 727 (I think?) off of Amazon. It was about 80 bucks with delivery. Anthony Kyle Monday tipped me off to it. You push some buttons and then it is region free. it has never failed me and has changed my life. buy it now.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you know the buttons I should push?

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It says on amazon in the user reviews, you can't miss it!

I can voucj for it's regionless as it plays all of the DVDs that I brought over from the UK.

WARNING. It does not paly DVD-Rs, apparently, but I haven't tried so maybe it does.

It also says H3LL0 when you switch it on!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I checked it out. It says:

Plays DVD-Video, DVD+RW, DVD+R, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3-CD, VCD, S-VCD and Picture CD Format

Not playing DVD-R well is a deal-breaker because I am a narcissist and much watch my own material.

No, I totally understand. I had the same reservations, but I don't have a DVD burner, so I'll worry about that when I come to it.

What kind of "material" do you make, LA Dean?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now I'm printing DVDs of a short "film" (25:30) that I made when I was still an undergrad. Millenialist, "art" video. I made it using school facilities and it scarred the thing badly so I'm trying to clean it up and get a good DVD out of it before we start working on the next one. Sort of a sequel in the sense that it features the same (and only) character and has similar mood. "Art" I suppose :)

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm making "art" too!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Recently I have been filming a fireplace...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

How about I film you filming the fireplace?

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

What a meta-idea! Never been done before! Let me sign you guys to a distribution deal!

Miramax executive (Leee), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I've got it. We make a movie about us making this movie where I'm filming him filming the fireplace. And we get ... JACK BLACK!!!

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's your Oscar!

The Academy (Leee), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, I have the same one @d@m mentioned above. It's great. BUT, you'll notice that the Amazon reviews have some mention that they go kaput after a month. I've had mine for longer and haven't had any problems but I also don't use it very much. It's a Philips which certainly used to denote quality but probably not anymore. But it's so cheap who cares, if it dies by the end of the year I'll just buy another one. They are definitely cheaper than the Malata or whatsits that I think Ned bought and mentioned on ILE and apparently, picturewise, are vastly superior as well

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend of mine has the Malata but only uses it when something won't play on his region-1 dvd player, so I don't know how sturdy it is. Cinefile in LA is selling them for around the same $100 price but I have no idea about the brands.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Dean, at any point does your movie feature a medium shot of your character stood speechless against a white wall?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 18 December 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, don't most DVD-Rs burn Region 0 anyway? Even if you had something hi-tech like DVD Studio Pro, you'd still have region code choice.

If you're making DVDs yourself, then the main issue (if this is going to even be an issue for you) is going to be PAL vs NTSC formatting, not region codes.

, Thursday, 18 December 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but from what I hear it's not the region of DVD-Rs that matters, it's the media itself.

This is all hearsay, though.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I would be using this regionless dvd player as my only player, since my current one is having trouble reading disks. So, playing DVD-Rs is important. Also, I don't know what the default is for DVDSP, but yes, I'm burning them as R2.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, Region 0, I meant. It's too busy here today for ILX...

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a sampo 611 which i'm embarrassed to say what i paid for it ;-) it was a piece of shit until i replaced the loader. a fun project but not a wholly satisfying electronics-buying experience

ron (ron), Saturday, 20 December 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got a Malata-558. I haven't given it proper time to see how it endures, but as of yet, it's already given me lots of pleasure. And I didn't have to track down those codes that sometimes don't work.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 20 December 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, another great site and resource regarding a lot of these issues is http://www.dvdrhelp.com/ (formerly vcdhelp.com)

, Saturday, 20 December 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I will buy the Malata then if it will pleasure me.

TEH ONE AN ONLEY DEANN GULBAREY (deangulberry), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a Malata 520. i have replaced my old Panasonic DVD player with this one -- it's been in faithful service for over a year now and has never given me a problem.

Our house has the Malata DVP 520, and it has performed perfectly for the last year, though we don't have a progressive scan t.v., so I can't tell you how well that feature works. I think we picked it up from www.hkflix.com. This model is being discontinued in favor of the 558, so if you want X-Y scaling (to reduce overscan), you might want to move quickly.

Ryan McKay (Ryan McKay), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
Yesterday, a friend let me borrow a DVD...I tried watching it on my Sony DVD player only to receive an error message (playback prohibited by area limitations). So, I put the disc in my computer, which read it as a blank DVD. Then I tried playing it on my friend's Mac, and it worked.

After doing some quick research, I've figured out that it has to do with regions (and the film happens to be from Europe)...I went into my control panel and saw that the computer's Phillips DVD player allows you to change the region code 5 times but no more...I figured that I might as well try changing it once, but afterwards, it still thought it was a blank DVD. How can I get this to work without buying another DVD player?

Has anyone tried this method? http://www.dvddemystifiziert.de/codefree_en/sony.html
