wonderful.

I saw this wonderful video referenced/ripped off in a music video from a couple years ago. Some bad post-weezer band. Who was it?

theodore fogelsanger, Saturday, 6 March 2004 20:02 (twenty years ago) link

If you like HMPL, I highly suggest the hilarious awfulness that is TV Carnage. Casual Fridays is one of the few things that I can say I honestly laugh myself to exhaustion every single time I view it. Unfortunately, it's sad that this shit exists to begin with.

That TV Carnage clip of that kid with no legs skateboarding = me dies.

American Hi-Fi.

saw this on bootleg VHS shortly after it was released... very awesome.

I saw this at the very end of a very long party with very much alcohol (and uhh, other stuff) last year. As someone who'd come far too close to seeing JP when they were in town for that tour, seeing HMPL in my current state was close to what I imagine a full-on raging 'Nam Flashback would be like (a-la Jacobs Ladder).
What was far more disturbing was the movie we watched after, some home video documentary about El Duce from the band The Mentors... There are some things you just wish you could un-watch...

StickyC, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:53 (twenty years ago) link

Where did you get the El Duce video?

Also, is the "Hated" documentary about G.G. Allin worth checking out? I know the guy who directed "road trip" and "old school" did it, but i've heard good things.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:39 (twenty years ago) link

The El Duce video belonged to the host. He said it had been passed on by a friend. I've tried Googling for it, but the results centered around El Duce's appearance in 1998's "Kurt & Courtney". This was certainly older and much more amateurish - it's not listed on IMDB. I'll drop him an email and see if I can get a title.

StickyC, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:15 (twenty years ago) link

El Duce, hit by a train, claimed he was asked to whack Cobain...R.I.P., you crazy freak.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 06:36 (twenty years ago) link

Here's a site where you can find a compilation of El Duce and his band the Mentors http://www.revengeismydestiny.com/Music.html amongst other rare trash and treasures.
I remember liking the "Hated" documentary. I used to own it. Lost it. I found myself thinking I could potentially respect GG Allin had he not found it necessary to physically hurt people.
Todd Phillips also directed the "Frat House" documentary that was bought then banned from HBO due to some question of events being staged in it. A friend of mine just ordered it from the above link. Incidentally I think all of Phillips' silly Hollywood comedies are wonderful.

theodore fogelsanger, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 08:00 (twenty years ago) link

But would G.G. still be "G.G." if he didn't hurt people?

I just ordered the "Frathouse" doc as well; it's kind of strange to be excited to watch a film about people you never wanted to be around in real life. but i guess a lot of films are like that.

I've never seen "road trip" or phillips' new film, but i was fond of "old school". i'm not sure if it was his directing, though. it could just be the fact that i find will ferrell to be a genius. the "behind the actors' studio" on the DVD's special features was hillarious--although phillips comes off as a pompous little jerk.

Has anyone seen Neil Diamond Parking Lot? The filmmakers did the same thing at the same stadium parking lot but for a Neil Diamond concert.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 18:43 (twenty years ago) link

...and Harry Potter Parking Lot, filmed at a Harry Potter book signing. One kid memorized (and could recite word-for-word) the first page of one of the books. The best part, though, was the end, where the filmmaker asked a middle-aged woman to say "You've been watching Harry Potter Parking Lot" to the camera but she keeps on saying "I've been watching Harry Potter Parking Lot".

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 18:51 (twenty years ago) link

it's not a film, but that reminds me of the hilarious skit on conan o'brien where triumph the wonderdog interviews people lined up for the opening day of the new star wars movie.

god i love that potty-mouthed little mutt.

Found this floating around, very much like a modern Heavy Metal Parking Lot

Let me try that again; "I'll drop the host an email and see if I can get a title."

Oy!
(and I did, but haven't heard back from the host yet)

Washington City Paper cover article from two years ago - Update on HMPL filmmaker Jeff Krulik

The Capital Centre was the local arena-rock shed when I was growing up so I have fond memories of the place, but alas I didn't see Judas Priest. Or Neil Diamond.
