I think "The Return of the King" is one of the most boring films ever. Would you agree?

Boring : no. Jackson has an undeniable gift for orchestrating those massive set-pieces and I enjoyed the action scenes. Everything else : the dialogue, the plot, (most of) the acting, the music - was horrible. Horrible. the worst of the three films, I think..

I haven't seen Return of the King yet, but since the entire trilogy was filmed at once, and my opinion was basically the same for the first two installments, I imagine I will feel the same way about the conclusion. They're not GREAT movies, in my opinion, just uncommonly well-made. I attribute their massive success not to their actual quality, but to the overall mediocrity of Hollywood's general output. These aren't masterpieces in any way, shape, or form, just really solid entertainment. The fact that you can rarely get a good piece of trash these days just makes these movies feel better than they are. In a perfect world, all Hollywood blockbusters would be like this: ambitious, exciting, coherent, imaginative, and stylish. In a perfect world, however, these movies would also not have received the completely overblown amount of praise that they got. But whatever. They're a hell of a lot more interesting than the majority of the CG-fests coming out week after week, so I don't find much reason to complain.

You know, that's how I feel about The Usual Suspects. I didn't feel like it was such a spectacularly good movie, I just thought it was solid and entertaining and how all such films should be and could be.

And I didn't feel that way about the Lord of the Rings films until right now this minute. Now I'm not so sure.
