one of Ray's best films.2nd best after Charulata imo.

I'm taking your word for it. I just reserved Charulata.

One of the famous people mentioned seemed to be "Rabindranath." Presumably that is Rabindranath Tagore who I guess is on a first name basis in that part of the country.

it's funny, cause Ray's movies post Apu trilogy are underrated, while in fact they are his absolut masterpieces.
even in the Apu trilogy itself - pather panchali, his most famous film and the highest rated in "best movies" polls is probably the weakest of the three (though still great by itself of course) - it's amateur directing style and lack of confidence in parts are obvious, esp. when compared to his later works.
Ray, along with Renoir, is the most humanist of all directors, sort of the Chekov of cinema, and his use of "film as language" is masterfull.

Finally watched Charulata. Now will try to get a hold of Days And Nights In The Forest aka Aranyer dinratri.
― irmão tuomas (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 6 November 2009 16:47 (fourteen years ago) link
OK. Just got Days And Nights In The Forest and The Middleman aka Jana Aranya out of the library. Queens library actually has lots of copies of these. Only thing is the surface looks all scratched up, like The Seven Samurai have been hacking at them.
― irmão tuomas (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 6 November 2009 23:22 (fourteen years ago) link
Library version of Days and Nights is unmenued, badly duped copy with no subtitles. They have an OK copy of The Zoo, which was apparently his least favorite of his films.

This thread is pretty good. Thanks for the Indian Tomb, moullet. I guess Jonathan Rosenbaum is worth paying attention to every once and a while after all.
