the worst director to win the palme d'or twice

Almost certainly Coppola, but gonna do quick imdb run-downs of the others. I love Haneke, but I imagine he's going to get a bunch of stick from horrible mean ilxors.

I might say Haneke if Love is crap.

Actually having gone through their filmographies, I'm not really well-versed enough to say a definitive worst, or even best. But, come on, Coppola directed Jack, ffs.

Based on the Palme d'Or winning films alone, Dardennes no question

August's two winners ain't terrible, just Oscar-style respecable.

i havent seen any Sjoberg either. im not gonna hold coppola's late career against him, the guy made the freaking godfather.

But... Jack.

Sjöberg hardly counts, as 46 was the year where everybody won. As a Dane, I won't vote for August, plus Pelle the Conqueror is really good (he probably has the worst filmography of the directors in question, though) Kosturica, I think, I've only seen one of his films, and I can't even remember which one, but it really annoyed me.

I've only seen Black Cat, White Cat of his, but it's awesome.

haneke.....not especially fond but fair enough given their remit, though probably la pianiste or caché would be better choices

coppola.....excellent because it was for apocalypse now / the conversation rather than any of his other films, he makes nice wine too apparently

idk if Haneke ever designs his films so that ppl can look back fondly on. All I remember were the gasps of horror at Majid's suicide in Hidden.

I'm never sure what the criteria for films receiving Palme d'Or -- many of the films can be seen as either 'formally interesting' or 'socially engaged' depending on the fashion. Some can be both, some are just for laughs (Michael Moore, etc.)

I haven't seen any August, but "Oscar-style respecable" actually is the worst kind of movie you can make.

The Eel, Imamura's second Palme D'Or winner, is not a great movie imho, and I'm puzzled as to why it won the prize (dunno what other films it was up against)
