Okay, I'm not going to spend much time defending myself against you, "n/a" but the main reason I haven't done it PERIOD is because I'm not as big of a douchebag as some people seem to think i am, and I don't find it necessary to start threads with the sole point of mocking somebody or something (usually, anyway.)

THAT SAID, Alex in NYC gets on my nerves for his incredible narrow-mindedness and superiority complex.

Somewhat inexplicably, their name keeps getting mentioned here, when to my ears, they're nothing but cookie-cutter, generic cheese-whiz R'n'B with nothing to offer the world but bitchy 'diva' behavior, cliched/overzealous vocal stylings and wretchedly stupid lyrics. Their new single, "Survivor" is not only cloying and numbingly repetitive, but it's just the rehash of the middle-eight of their *LAST* single, the equally-annoying "Say My Name." Why are people snowed by this watered-down pabulum? Are they really offering something that's new and different or even well-executed? Do they really have anything relevant to say beyond gratuitous self-aggrandized rhetoric? Didn't we hear all this stuff already in the form of the vastly superior En Vogue? Granted, Beyonce's a decent looking woman, but B.F.D.! PEOPLE, THEY'RE CRAP! RAISE YOUR STANDARDS...or convince me that I'm mistaken.

Okay, so Melissa Ethridge blights the world with another shrill, pious album, SKIN (adorned with a crotch-shot cover that desperately intends to invoke the sort of reputable career reinvention that Madonna achieved with her crotch-shot-adorned LIKE A PRAYER album -- itself a pale if possibly unintentional xerox of the Crue's libidinous cover of TOO FAST FOR LOVE), she then unveils a promotional live vid dubbed "Live....& Alone" -- seemingly further exploiting her very public breakup with her ex, Julie Sipher, and then caps it off with a tell-all book dubbed "The Truth Is...". My question is,....who asked?

Best Abba Track EVAH!

Am stuck in a drunken debate about it. All the fire-dishonoring sheep maintain it's the hackneyed, overplayed, bloated whore of a song that is "Dancing Queen," but I'm demanding that it's the British Punk pre-figuring "S.O.S." that wears the goddamn crown! What say you....?

Been seeing this bizarre style crop up a lot lately --- the trend among hip-hop kids of wearing HALF of their shirt, with the rest sort've slung/worn over the shoulder (the left arm not in the appropriate sleeve). I think I first saw it in a Nelly video, but I could be mistaken. In any event, I'm now constantly seeing it in the street and on the subway, begging the question: WHAT GIVES?!?! How can that be considered (a) cool (b) practical (c) anything but utterly ridiculous? Big, baggy pants is one thing, but intentionally "half-wearing" a jersey? That's only slightly more ridiculous than the whole Kris Kross baloney of ten years back where they'd wear their clothes backwards.

Someone please defend/explain this to me.

For lack of anything better to read over a sincerely dubious plate of scrambled eggs this morning, I picked up the latest (i think) issue of NME at my local newsstand, featuring still-quite-dead Kurt Cobain on the cover. Vainly hoping to see some tiny news nugget about "Killing Joke back in the studio with a new lease on life after death" or even something about a genuinely *NEW* band that might pique my curiosity, I was instead inundated with page after page after page of "the legacy of Nirvana" and whatnot. Witness this completely idiotic quote from Alex White of some band called The Electric Soft Parade:

"Kurt Cobain was the king of teenage angst, and when he committed
suicide, he was instantly a legend. His death added to the romance and
mystique of his lifestyle. He's up there now having a jam with Morrison and Hendrix, with Keith Moon on drums!"

Now, for a start, I've never heard of the Electric Soft Parade (but I can tell already they're not big on originality based on their name), so maybe I should know better, but c'mon......"the romance and mystique of his lifestyle"?!?!?!?!? He was a loser from Aberdeen, Washington who wore flannel, did smack, bitched about stomach pains and played in a garage band that basically appropriated the work of several other bands.....WHERE'S THE ROMANCE & MYSTIQUE IN THAT? And don't even get me started on that claptrap about "jamming with Morrison, Hendrix and Moon"....what a load of shit. Fuckin' graveside groupies!

Moreover, for all this talk about how the two other thirds of Nirvana were battling with Courtney about "cashing-in" and "exploitation" and "properly serving Kurt's memory," between the media blitz over the
frankly-not-wildy-impressive "new" track ("You Know You're Right," appended to a best-of that contains no other surprises but tracks that even passive fans probably already have a couple of times over) and the glossily published tome of Kurt's diaries (and.....really.....what the fuck is that about? Do you really think the sad little man himself would have wanted that shit published?) I'm left with just a sickening aftertaste of hypocrisy and opportunism.

The only justice will be if the album (let alone the forthcoming box set) fails to chart as spectacularly as expected and slidesjustifiably into for-fans-only obscurity.

Just because it's healthy to vent.

What was the last bit of music you heard that you absolutely abhored? And why?

Mine: Scout Niblett (because, as I mentioned before, she makes the worst music in the world), Simple Plan's "I'd Do Anything" (because it made me ashamed to be a white male) and Celine Dion's duet with Anastasia on a truly ill-advised, fire-dishonoring cover of AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long," which simply made me shudder with contempt and made me regret having ears.

Maybe I'm completely mistaken, but I'd like to think I'm a reasonably open minded guy. I'm generally able to conduct myself like a mature adult when discussing otherwise sensitive topics such as politics, sex and religion, without making snap judgments or sweeping condemnations. HOWEVER, because my life is also governed by a pathological obsession with meaningless trivia, I tend to take some otherwise insignificant matters ENTIRELY TOO SERIOUSLY. For example, even if I'm connecting on an intellectual level and am engaged in a thoughtful discourse/exchange of ideas with someone and suddenly find out that they're a fan of......say.....Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston or maybe Puddle of Mudd, I INSTANTLY AND IRREVOCABLY LOSE ALL SEMBLANCE OF RESPECT FOR THEM! There is no disucssion. It ends there.

If you suffer from simillar blindsighted prejudices, who are the deal breakers for you? Which artists will make you write someone off without hope of redemption?

if american pop music was demonstrably different after a track than before a track and the difference can be directly attributed to the track than yeah i'd say it's fair to say a track "changed american pop music"; you can debate whether the impact was for good or ill but to deny it completely is willful ignorance on a bushco level. perhaps alex could do us a favor and note which musicians have actually cured cancer or perhaps he could stop bleating about how twenty five year old halfassed boring new wave cock rock records are the endall and beall of human accomplishment and maybe pull his tineared head out of his ass. as it is more and more he's becoming one of the denser members and bigger assholes of the time-warner empire (not an easy accomplishment since he had to beat out tucker carlson for the honor)(but alex does again and again, with ease and glee). oh, and fuck you too.

Yes, no, maybe
I don't know
Can you repeat the question?

You're not the boss of me now
You're not the boss of me now
You're not the boss of me now, and you're not so big
You're not the boss of me now
You're not the boss of me now
You're not the boss of me now, and you're not so big

Life is unfair, so I just stare at the stain on the wall where
The TV'd been, but ever since we've moved in it's been empty

Why I, why I'm in this room
There is no point explaining

You're not the boss of me now, and you're not so big
You're not the boss of me now
You're not the boss of me now
You're not the boss of me now, and you're not so big

Life is a test, and I confess
I like this mess I've made so far
Grade on a curve and you'll observe
I'm right below the horizon

Yes, no, maybe, I don't know
Can you repeat the question?

You're not the boss of me now
You're not the boss of me now
You're not the boss of me now, and you're not so big
You're not the boss of me now
You're not the boss of me now
You're not the boss of me now, and you're not so big

You're not the boss of me now
You're not the boss of me now
You're not the boss of me now, and you're not so big
You're not the boss of me now
You're not the boss of me now
You're not the boss of me now, and you're not so big

I didn't even notice max on that thread

at least the dude has some real feeling behind his thoughts and ideas not all "let's all be nice to each other and listen to sting and jack off in each other's sensitive ponytails" all the time.

^^ btw the whole "let's all be nice to each other" thing is basically just "please try to not talk shit about ppl on 77, esp. if they cannot see what you are writing" (I know I'm as guilty of this as anyone FWIW)

Ancheta's 57-month sentence immediately rocked chat rooms where SoBe and other would-be botherders spent time. Because the federal system generally doesn't award time off for good behavior, it meant Ancheta would have spent roughly one-fifth of his life behind bars by the time he was released. This came as a severe shock to SoBe.

"Everyone thinks its retarded pretty much," said SoBe. "But its not going to stop anyone from doing bots. i think at most he shouldve faced a fine, probation, etc not be sentenced to jail for stupid shit that didnt hurt anyone if you think about it."

STILL THE CHAMP OVER HERE

El Tomboto, Friday, 9 May 2008 22:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Shifty and Floyd

The rooms of the hotel have high ceilings, some of which are inset with rosette panels of stained glass depicting mountains and trees and the faces of ever-blooming flowers. The walls are painted light blue – the color of robin eggs in spring – and are ornamented with trim and gold-leafed scrolls. Shelves are set into the walls behind glass, displaying figurines and antique clocks, all made of porcelain as pale as bone. “Don’t let the Captain see ‘em,” Joe Liebgott had joked upon their arrival. He gestured at an expensive-looking statuette and smirked. “Or else they’ll find their way home in Speirs’s footlocker.”

In a place like Austria – full of lush and comfortable beauty – Floyd finds it easier to sleep and to look forward to returning home, though he does not dwell on the kind of life that waits for him there. And although he tries not to think about it, he knows that there are things he will have to unlearn or learn again; things that must be forgotten or remembered or let go of.

Floyd shakes his head sharply and tries not to think about it.

Shifty is there in the borrowed bedroom with him, sitting in front of him at the end of a neatly made bed, unbuttoning the cuffs of his uniform. His tie is already undone and hangs loosely around his neck, slightly skewed. Without looking up, he says in his gentle tone of voice: “You didn’t tell me about your girl.” It takes Floyd slightly off guard, making him shake his head a second time.

“I don’t have a girl, Shifty,” he says.

“But you used to.”

“Yeah. Yeah, I did.” It feels strange to suddenly think about Amelia after all this time – to talk about her, especially to Shifty. Floyd shrugs. “But she’s forgotten about me,” he adds quietly.

A hand pushes Floyd’s shirt open to touch his bare chest; strong, powerful fingers crawl upwards against his skin to find his scars and a mouth follows, leaving tiny wet marks in its wake. When Shifty finally looks up, his open lips are pressed onto the spot where Smith’s bayonet had run Floyd through and Floyd feels the blood rush to the underside of his skin, prickling as it goes. He likes it when Shifty looks at him like this, his dark eyes burning with a gentle, hidden ferocity. “Have you forgotten about her?” he asks quietly, his words tickling Floyd’s ribcage as his breath hitches.

Floyd thinks about this for a moment, already knowing the answer. He tries to remember what it was like to have Amelia touch him and to touch back, to undo the buttons of her shirt and slide his hand inside to feel the smooth skin of her breasts, the round softness of her belly. He tries to recall the smell of her clothes and the perfume of her hair, but all he knows now is the man before him and the feeling of muscle and bone moving tightly beneath warm skin. The smell of soap and shaving cream, of cotton and linen mixed with wood, made sharp by a metal edge.

He looks down at Shifty’s face, his mouth still drifting across Floyd’s torso; he leans forward, pushing Shifty down onto the bed and allowing himself to be pulled after him. He urges a knee in between Shifty’s thighs and the shudder that follows comes from both of them.

“You wanna know the truth?” Floyd asks.

Shifty nods and Floyd moves his knee until Shifty’s thighs fall farther open, his hips rise to meet him. Shifty fumbles with both of their flies as Floyd bends down to taste the skin of his shoulder. He pushes his mouth along the line of Shifty’s neck and feels the pulse quicken there beneath his tongue.

“Tell me,” Shifty mumbles urgently and when they finally kiss, Shifty’s jaw works eagerly as his teeth claim.

“Truth is, sometimes,” Floyd confesses, “I can’t even remember her name.”

The corners of Shifty’s mouth tighten against Floyd’s lips as smiles around their kiss. His fingers touch Floyd’s wrist, guiding his fist to move around his cock in a quick and even rhythm.

“Forget about everything,” Shifty says and his words are whispered and urgent. “S’just you and me here on this side of the world,” he adds before asking Floyd to fuck him.

Let's talk about Alex in NYC's dissertations. Let's talk about them in a very specific and personal way. To get right down to it, it's Alex in NYC's deep-seated belief that people are pawns to be used and manipulated. Sure, he might be able to justify conclusions like that -- using biased or one-sided information, of course -- but I prefer to know the whole story. In this case, the whole story is that Alex in NYC seems to assume that without his superior guidance, we will go nowhere. This is an assumption of the worst kind because a central point of his belief systems is the notion that we have no reason to be fearful about the criminally violent trends in our society today and over the past ten to fifteen years. Perhaps Alex in NYC should take some new data into account and revisit that notion. I think it'd find that its editorials were never about tolerance and equality. That was just window dressing for the "innocents". Rather, when I observe Alex in NYC's behavior, I can't help but recall the proverbial expression, "monkey see, monkey do". That's because he wants to use psychological tools to trick us into doing whatever intransigent yutzes require of us. Also, while a monkey might think that principles don't matter, the fact remains that I honestly have a hard time trying to reason with people who remain calm when they see Alex in NYC judge people by the color of their skin while ignoring the content of their character.

I am not a robot. I am a thinking, feeling, human being. As such, I get teary-eyed whenever I see Alex in NYC silence anyone whom he considers shabby. It makes me want to weaken the critical links in its nexus of soporific, cruel fascism, which is why I'm so eager to tell you that Alex in NYC's older views were insincere enough. His latest ones are obviously beyond the pale. This letter has gone on far too long in my opinion and probably yours as well. So let me end it by saying merely that Alex in NYC files one grievance after another.

AJ Styles, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:24 (sixteen years ago) link

but I prefer to know the whole story

..yet base your conclusions solely on frivolously expressed opinions about pop music. Yes, good, sound plan, that.

I've left ILX before for various reasons, usually involving other time-consuming activities and priorities, but I've always come back, as I've found it to be an informative and amusing source of discussion and information -- and I've met several bright, friendly like-minded individuals through it who I now count as friends. Clearly, some people take the exchanges here far more seriously than they ought to. This might be the one that legitimately scares me off ILX for good. AJ or Ian or Sockpuppet or whoever you are -- if you truly have a legitimate grievance you truly want to address with me, why not e-mail directly and we'll hash it out?

Otherwise, I can only say that I shocked and shaken by this thread.

El Tomboto, Friday, 16 May 2008 22:43 (sixteen years ago) link

are starting trouble and getting off really the same thing to you, chaki?

to answer your question though, it is fairly similar yes. i couldn't give a shit how much money alex makes, or where he lives, or how he behaves towards his children, BUT, when someone takes it upon themselves to make judgments of people based on things like their musical taste or celebrity status, he's opening himself to the same type of criticism. especially when it's done in the absolutely obnoxious and hateful way. for all the posts Alex has made on ILX suggesting that certain people ought to be dead or arbitrarily silenced, i don't think he should be bewildered that I think he's kind of a prick.

and chaki, you of all people really have no place criticizing anyone else's ILX behavior; you're among the most manipulative and vile of ILX posters.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 16 May 2008 23:43 (sixteen years ago) link

In any case, Ian (and whomever else), if you insist on taking anything I have to say about pop music and its accompanying fandom as my sincere and heartfelt opinion, then might I suggest investing in a sense of humor (or at least an awareness of a sense of humor that you yourself might not necessarily subscribe to) and stop taking everything so literally.

I strive in my life to treat people with a modicum of respect.

Yes, by saying really nasty things about them on a secret board. Yes, well done there.

Maybe you shouldn't present yourself like such a bastard in public discourse if you don't want people judging you.

I don't think I do present myself like "such a bastard," honestly, but I suppose that's just my opinion. This is an open forum for debate and discussion. I happen to express my opinions in a certain way (though I don't believe I've ever actually wished death on anyone, although I might be wrong about that). In any event, in terms of discussions about music and taste, I'm of the opinion that anyone who takes such conversations so dreadfully seriously has their priorities somewhat severely out of whack. Meanwhile, you evidently interpret everything you read as gospel. If you're so deeply offended by my opinions that run contrary to your own, might I suggest that you simply refrain from reading them.
