Fans at Safeco Field gave Ichiro a 45-second standing ovation when he came to bat with one out in the third inning. He doffed his helmet and bowed twice to the crowd before hitting a single and stealing second base.

According to High Heat Stats, the Yankees are the first team since the A's of the late '20s to have three players on their roster with 2500+ hits. Between the '39 Pirates (Waner, Manush) and '73 Angels (Robinson, Pinson), no team ever had more than one; since then, a number of teams have had two.

http://www.highheatstats.com/2012/07/ichiro-and-2500-hit-teammates/#more-5154

It'd be neat if they had a shot at three 3,000-hit guys, but Ichiro's chances must be edging toward 0%.

Trampoline inspections every 3 weeks.

I didn't know about this:

When he broke George Sisler’s single-season record for hits, in 2004, the Hall of Fame presented Suzuki with a replica model of Sisler’s bat: all 36 inches and 46 ounces of it. Suzuki felt a kinship with Sisler, who set his record in 1920, and visited his grave site in St. Louis before the All-Star Game in 2009.

The next year, before a series at Yankee Stadium, Suzuki visited Calvary Cemetery in Queens to see the grave of another Hall of Famer, Wee Willie Keeler. Suzuki had broken Keeler’s record of seven consecutive 200-hit seasons, which had stood for more than century.

Jeter is so underrated among stat dudes. His fielding sucks, so what.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 23 August 2012 06:04 (eleven years ago) link

Girardi erupts against a ChiSox fan ... wow. and I really love Joe too. But he's just wrong tonight

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 23 August 2012 06:17 (eleven years ago) link

Wow first Melky and now Colon start doing testosterone after leaving the Yankees. It must be such a downer to not be able to play for them that this is some sort of coping mechanism.

sanskrit, Thursday, 23 August 2012 17:17 (eleven years ago) link

High Heat Stats has a Jeter chart today triggered by "allegations" that were made yesterday. So I looked into the allegations, and it's just a couple of guys yelling at each other.

are you using that BP Prospectus odds visualizer? such a great tool. does 0.00% mean infinitesimally small chances below 0.01% or mathematically out of it? thought you might be know the answer.

sanskrit, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 21:15 (eleven years ago) link

I suspect that until a team is eliminated, it's an infinitesimal figure above zero.

i kinda want to see the 1-in-1000 scenario in which the royals make the playoffs

Ah, that Yankees magic ... they're 0-53 this season when trailing after 8 innings, only team in majors that's winless in that situation.

i wonder how many teams have finished 20 games over 500 and never had a comeback win of that sort
