haven't seen any sanctimony, more 'why would he sign on with such a shitshow of an organization?'

mookieproof, Friday, 4 December 2015 19:22 (eight years ago) link

well presumably he's satisfied the checks won't bounce

why would barry bonds go to the marlins is sort of a self-answering question

J0rdan S., Friday, 4 December 2015 20:24 (eight years ago) link

i heard it's not present-timeline barry bonds, but future-timeline barry bonds coming back in time to prevent giancarlo stanton from hitting the 810 career home runs he would have hit in MLB Universe Prime by subtly fucking with his mechanics

it's a rumour but i heard it from a pretty good source

MYSTERY TEAM SWOOPIN IN UR ASSES

Ken Rosenthal ✔ @Ken_Rosenthal
Sources: Greinke in agreement with #DBacks, pending physical.

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 December 2015 01:10 (eight years ago) link

what

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 5 December 2015 01:34 (eight years ago) link

Greinke is a mad genius whose ways we cannot fully comprehend.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 5 December 2015 01:40 (eight years ago) link

I mean that is indisputably true but that's still kinda baffling

if an american league team had offered him more money i wonder if he'd have taken it

anyway he's awesome and baseball is swimming in money but if he really got more than price for his mid-to-late 30s that seems iffy

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 December 2015 01:47 (eight years ago) link

starting to be nervous for the Giants here, I am fearing a panic move for Cueto or a real shitty trade coming in. they need a top of the rotation starting pitcher.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 5 December 2015 01:51 (eight years ago) link

@SportsTaxMan
Zack Greinke reportedly agrees to Six-year deal with #DBacks. top tax rate in #Arizona is 4.54% top tax rate in #California is 13.3

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 December 2015 01:52 (eight years ago) link

they need a top of the rotation starting pitcher

they need it less than most, u very spoiled fan

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 December 2015 01:54 (eight years ago) link

I want nothing to do with Cueto. that dude has bust written all over him.

carthago delenda est (mayor jingleberries), Saturday, 5 December 2015 01:54 (eight years ago) link

@Ken_Rosenthal
Sources: Greinke deal is six years, $206M. Deferrals expected.

YO

Andy K, Saturday, 5 December 2015 01:58 (eight years ago) link

in fWAR, Giants' rotation was 25th in the league. more than a full war behind the Marlins. unless Cain is magically returning to form, it doesn't look pretty for next year.

kinda surprised the top tax rate in California is the same than Ontario. (kinda glad Quebec has it at 25,75%)

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 5 December 2015 02:02 (eight years ago) link

@JeffPassan
If Greinke deal is $206M for six years, as @Ken_Rosenthal says, that's $34.3M per year -- >10% higher than record Price tied three days ago.

@robneyer
Starting to sound like this was all about that title, Highest Paid Player. I guess everybody's gotta sleep at night.

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 December 2015 02:03 (eight years ago) link

lol that's more than Kershaw.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 5 December 2015 02:04 (eight years ago) link

@BMcCarthy32
@robneyer because there's no reason for him to ever do more than 4 years at a time? 4/160?

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 December 2015 02:06 (eight years ago) link

o wait, that was about harper making half a billion, but still

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 December 2015 02:07 (eight years ago) link

let's take a moment to appreciate the greatness of Kluber's contract. 5 years / 38,5 m.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 5 December 2015 02:07 (eight years ago) link

iirc the giants have a front-of-the-rotation (a formulation i hate but here we are) starter. by definition you only get one; i suspect they merely need better 2-5 starters

/pédant

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 December 2015 02:10 (eight years ago) link

yeah you are right, for the me the ideal situation would have been grabbing Zimmermann as a 1b, but hey if we get Iwakuma or Kazmir I'll be very happy. It's just that I have the feeling they'll go for the big name, they have so much money coming off the books.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 5 December 2015 02:14 (eight years ago) link

well i'm glad it is over. can't believe he got that much.

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 December 2015 02:44 (eight years ago) link

i guess that at this point, the players could pool all their money and buy all 30 franchises with it.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 5 December 2015 03:27 (eight years ago) link

that they can't is exactly the point

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 December 2015 03:27 (eight years ago) link

i feel like this is the closest thing we've seen to the old a-rod/rangers deal

cano to the mariners had the same sort of dynamic (random team pulling star player with contract he simply can't refuse) but that one was telegraphed pretty overtly

i guess pujols to the angels too

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 December 2015 04:54 (eight years ago) link

when greinke initially signed with the dodgers he explicitly said it was because they offered the most money, which is totally legit. i personally might take a million less for a particular situation, but i don't throw very hard and ZG doesn't seem to care too much about situations

it's tough because he's a freak and even though he and the players totally deserve that money it's been made to look greedy

mainly tho: ugh, arizona?

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 December 2015 05:09 (eight years ago) link

jeez, i didn't realize grienke was 32, i thought he was more like 30

you figure he'll be worth 20-25 wins over that 6 year period, maybe more if this year wasn't too much of a fluke. the going rate supposedly is what, 6 million per WAR? 8? i forget. either way, it's an overpay, but probably not egregiously so

k3vin k., Saturday, 5 December 2015 05:37 (eight years ago) link

the amount of money baseball players are paid is absurd

k3vin k., Saturday, 5 December 2015 05:52 (eight years ago) link

i guess whatever projection system cameron uses predicts he'll be worth 17.1 wins over that period, which seems a little low, but given that $/WAR is currently at 8 million and will go up to above 10 million at the end of the deal*, maybe it's not so much of an overpay

* this is absurd btw, why does this number keep going up at such an exponential rate? a 25% increase in 6 years?

k3vin k., Saturday, 5 December 2015 05:55 (eight years ago) link

live tv is precious. ballplayers are crazy overpaid, but would you rather the money just went to jeffrey loria etc?

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 December 2015 05:59 (eight years ago) link

i saw a graph on twitter that i can't find right now that shows player salaries relative to overall team revenue have actually decreased over time despite contracts like this one

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 December 2015 06:05 (eight years ago) link

the dave cameron post calculated that he would be worth about $150 million just as a pitcher but there's ~$50 million worth of value in his bat and glove. grienke has been a special hitter relative to all other pitcher but i dunno about that one.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 December 2015 06:07 (eight years ago) link

As recently as the early 2000s, player salaries accounted for more than 55 percent of league revenue. Since then, that share has declined precipitously, all the way down to the 43 percent that Boras cited on Monday.

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 December 2015 06:09 (eight years ago) link

there's a chance that the d backs know privately that this is an overpay but are willing to do so in order to lure a player of grienke's caliber. how harmful that is is dependent on whether the owner is willing to tack that overpaid money onto the team's salary budget instead of detracting from it.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 December 2015 06:10 (eight years ago) link

they've got goldy and pollock and a decent manager, which is a big step up from even two years ago

it's just that when has a contract like this ever actually worked out? maybe another year or so, but age 32 -- for a pitcher! -- is when you walk away, not offer the biggest deal in baseball history

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 December 2015 06:20 (eight years ago) link

they just signed a 1.5 bill tv deal so they are sitting fat and ready to spend.

might have a reason to go to some dbax games now

Spottie, Saturday, 5 December 2015 07:08 (eight years ago) link

The Giants have agreed to sign Jeff Samardzija to a five-year deal.

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 December 2015 18:11 (eight years ago) link

now they need Mike Leake and pitching will be set.

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 December 2015 18:12 (eight years ago) link

The dominoes are starting to fall quick. Got to figure the Giants would like to resign Leake.

I wonder if the long term deal isn't out there for Cueto if he takes a single year max style deal to try to prove value and try to go long term deal in another season.

earlnash, Saturday, 5 December 2015 18:15 (eight years ago) link

5 yrs, 90 million for samardzija.

let's take a moment to appreciate the greatness of Kluber's contract. 5 years / 38,5 m.

samardzija career ERA+: 96

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 December 2015 20:02 (eight years ago) link

Samardzija’s contract breakdown is provided by Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle. The righty will receive a $9MM salary in 2016 then $18MM in each of the next four years. Samardzija gets a $3MM bonus immediately and then another $6MM in signing bonus money will be spread out over the last four years in equal $1.5MM installments.
