Good thinking by Ausmus to leave Castellanos on the bench and have McCann (.108/.175/.108) hit with the tying run on base.

@BNightengaleAnd to think the #Dbacks actually traded away Max Scherzer to #tigers, convinced that he would break down. Oops

from the comments section on fangraphs:
Brad Ausmus has been involved in three of the five 20K games. He struck out twice against Kerry Wood in 1998, he struck out once (and got a hit) against Roger Clemens in 1996, and now he managed the Tigers against Max Scherzer.

didn't realise that last year's no-hitter vs the mets was the game with the most strikeouts for two teams in a 9 innings game: 35.

Major League Baseball has suspended Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes without pay through May 31 for violating its domestic violence policy, the league announced Friday.
Reyes will not appeal. The suspension is retroactive to Feb. 23, when Reyes was first put on paid leave by the league. Through Thursday, he had missed 34 games.

ST. LOUIS -- They have determination, they have grit.
Martinez finally found a rhythm and managed to get through five innings.
Arrieta's game score, 40, was his lowest in more than a year. That, perhaps, is something to feel good about even if an eight-game deficit in the division standings isn't.
One fateful inning did in Martinez, much as it had Wacha the night before. Martinez worked a good inning before it and three good innings after it. In the second, the Cubs hit line drives all over the field.
Martinez puffed up with pride a bit when describing how he was able to regroup and stay in the game without a long reliever available.

They must avoid fateful innings and focus on making statements.

martinez was ace-like except for that inning where he gave up six runs. arrieta meanwhile is basically trash.
