Major League Baseball has suspended Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes without pay through May 31 for violating its domestic violence policy, the league announced Friday.

Reyes will not appeal. The suspension is retroactive to Feb. 23, when Reyes was first put on paid leave by the league. Through Thursday, he had missed 34 games.

interesting statistical thing i stumbled upon: jose altuve has stolen 15/16 bases in 41 games, but has rated a below average baserunner on FG and just 1 run above average on bbref

ST. LOUIS -- They have determination, they have grit.

Martinez finally found a rhythm and managed to get through five innings.

Arrieta's game score, 40, was his lowest in more than a year. That, perhaps, is something to feel good about even if an eight-game deficit in the division standings isn't.

One fateful inning did in Martinez, much as it had Wacha the night before. Martinez worked a good inning before it and three good innings after it. In the second, the Cubs hit line drives all over the field.

Martinez puffed up with pride a bit when describing how he was able to regroup and stay in the game without a long reliever available.

nomar, Thursday, 26 May 2016 17:08 (eight years ago) link

They must avoid fateful innings and focus on making statements.

Andy K, Thursday, 26 May 2016 17:16 (eight years ago) link

martinez was ace-like except for that inning where he gave up six runs. arrieta meanwhile is basically trash.

dan uggla had a 33 game hitting streak in 2011. just wanted to mention that.

and he ended up with a .233 average. how did that even happen?

paging clemenza

fernandez struck out 12 lefty batters last night. i wonder if there's a list (there must be) of most strikeouts in a game of lefty hitters by a righty pitcher

k3vin k., Monday, 6 June 2016 14:05 (eight years ago) link

Jason Grilli with an emphatic air jab as he keeps his new team within nine runs.

Andy K, Tuesday, 7 June 2016 01:39 (eight years ago) link

(xpost) Probably easy to figure out using Play Index, but I don't know how to use that. I'd start by checking Clemens' 20-K games, though.

clemenza, Tuesday, 7 June 2016 02:52 (eight years ago) link

both of his 20 K games had 9 lefty Ks

k3vin k., Tuesday, 7 June 2016 03:01 (eight years ago) link

Gotta be a record. In other baseball-related news, did you know that "trouting" is a usable word in Scrabble?

clemenza, Tuesday, 7 June 2016 03:07 (eight years ago) link

Why would anybody be against Madison Bumgarner hitting in the Home Run Derby? Because he might not uphold the "prestige" of a contest that nobody cares about? I don't see the downside here. People might remember something about the Home Run Derby for a change.

Ah, him -- he's been doing that with MLB for a while. He spent an inning in the Braves booth promoting it last year or year before.
