― k3vin k., Saturday, 3 June 2017 02:08 (seven years ago) link
btw i grew up in new york state as a yankees fan
― k3vin k., Saturday, 3 June 2017 02:09 (seven years ago) link

yet somehow also a pats fan and secret dubs fan?
― mookieproof, Saturday, 3 June 2017 02:16 (seven years ago) link
i am not a pats fan!
― k3vin k., Saturday, 3 June 2017 02:19 (seven years ago) link
i don't really like football that much anymore but my team is the eagles
okay, weird, but i guess that's punishment enough
― mookieproof, Saturday, 3 June 2017 02:24 (seven years ago) link
tbh i'd honestly be interested in how that happened
― mookieproof, Saturday, 3 June 2017 02:26 (seven years ago) link
judge is the current AL MVP front runner btw
Trout still the leader in all meaningful categories.

not too complicated -- 90s kid growing up in upstate NY so obviously yankees. parents went to grad school at syracuse, followed melo to the nuggets. dad grew up in lancaster and is an eagles fan, so they were my team
― k3vin k., Saturday, 3 June 2017 02:30 (seven years ago) link
ah, an amish family (j/k)
― mookieproof, Saturday, 3 June 2017 02:32 (seven years ago) link
while i do follow those teams and care about their success, this is the league pass/MLB.TV era now -- i'm just as much a fan of the league as a whole and interesting players and/or teams and follow accordingly. and because players generally don't receive the recognition they deserve unless their teams are winning, sometimes i root for the team too. hence i often root for the clippers even tho as a fan of the game the team pisses me off
― k3vin k., Saturday, 3 June 2017 02:35 (seven years ago) link
this is a much more common sentiment on ILH than ILB i've noticed, y'all are so sensitive and old fashioned! like when i posted that judge comment i wasn't rubbing it in or anything, just pointing it out as a fan of the game
― k3vin k., Saturday, 3 June 2017 02:36 (seven years ago) link
― Van Horn Street, Friday, June 2, 2017 10:27 PM (ten minutes ago)
yeah but realistically with him missing 2 months and the angels being a AA team without him his chances aren't great. judge is the best player on a first place team. obv he's gonna regress tho
― k3vin k., Saturday, 3 June 2017 02:39 (seven years ago) link
a cosmopolitanism that is admirable in these troubled times
it's cool -- just as long as you never divorce joey votto, of course
― mookieproof, Saturday, 3 June 2017 02:40 (seven years ago) link
the amish generally look down on that
― k3vin k., Saturday, 3 June 2017 02:43 (seven years ago) link
you're right, although i think it's good? team sports fandom is about hatred at least as much as it is about support. i mean, i legitimately am interested in the yankees because i hate them (and i don't even have a particularly good reason to)
you're not *that* young but i feel like this is a result of fantasy sports? would you root (hypothetically) against judge if he was facing your fantasy pitcher?
― mookieproof, Saturday, 3 June 2017 02:55 (seven years ago) link
yeah i think the combination of fantasy and easy access to any team's broadcast has led to an increase in what you call sports cosmopolitanism. twitter too -- i can follow any team's beat writer i want to and have a better idea of whats going on in the clubhouse than people could have decades ago. plus i imagine national columnists like zach lowe or jonah keri are just a lot more informed about aspects of the league, story lines that otherwise would not have gotten the same attention. i mean i read fangraphs every day, that site pretty much sums up how i consume baseball and i imagine the same is true of a lot of sports fans these days
people are always surprised that i don't do fantasy, but i don't. believe it or not from how often i post to ilx i do try to limit the distractions in my life, and i always worry fantasy will consume me. i have to study like 5-10 hours a day

basically everyone on this team is slugging .500+
― mookieproof, Sunday, 11 June 2017 02:25 (seven years ago) link
@Buster_ESPNGary Sanchez clubs his 10th homer, in 130 at-bats, and the Yankees have six players with 10 or more HRs. Boston has none, so far.
― mookieproof, Sunday, 11 June 2017 19:00 (seven years ago) link
Sanchez's HR today is his 30th in 90 career games. Found this piece from three years ago--that'd make him the fourth fastest ever, after Rudy York, McGwire, and Jose Abreu.

rudy york: one of the better players i'd never previously heard of. wonder how he avoided military service?
― mookieproof, Sunday, 11 June 2017 20:21 (seven years ago) link
I've known him for a while because of his big 18-HR month (think he held the record till Sosa hit 20). There's a really funny line from some sportswriter in his Wikipedia entry that I won't quote here because the language is a little dated.
― clemenza, Sunday, 11 June 2017 21:27 (seven years ago) link
That was an impressive blast from Judge today.

He's 25, and his minor-league record is fairly ordinary...Still not sure if he's Kevin Maas or not--where is this coming from?
― clemenza, Monday, 12 June 2017 13:01 (seven years ago) link
he's grown into his body. he never had this level of game power in the minors
