I literally started watching the fucking Red Sox, as a team that can hit, because I was sick of watching the Mariners fritter away good pitching with 10+ strikeouts through the order and just having zero plate discipline.

yeah, and it feels like every other time i turn on a game they have a collision or near-collision in the outfield because they're just not communicating with each other?

the Orioles were my team as a kid, but i've also been a Mariners fan most of my life, and it wasn't that long ago i was comparing the two - similar levels of promise and futility in my lifetime, but it felt like Mariners fans were having a good time watching a fun, lucky, chaotic team, while Orioles fans were either complete doomers or they were pinning their hopes on a mythical rebuild whose end date kept being postponed. And now...

Sounds like last night's O's/M's game was a doozy

Tracer Hand, Friday, 21 July 2023 07:52 (eleven months ago) link

One of the constants in my baseball life has been my dislike of the Red Sox, their fans and their ballpark.

keeping it pure, respect

Tracer Hand, Friday, 21 July 2023 21:53 (eleven months ago) link

Sox players/fans aside, hating Fenway is kinda cringe imho.

I wish there were more zany-dimensioned parks like it.

I briefly considered becoming a Red Sox fan after the Expos moved and I was cheering for the red sox in the 2004 playoffs, but the red sox fans turned me off and I ultimately never felt comfortable cheering for a big market team

silverfish, Friday, 21 July 2023 22:46 (eleven months ago) link

xp It's ugly as sin and stupidly contrarian. It's like my impression of Bostonians in general--it takes pride in being difficult.

I am being mostly tongue in cheek; my brother-in-law is from Boston and I love him dearly, but I suspect he would agree to some extent with my assessment.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 21 July 2023 22:47 (eleven months ago) link

Fenway is amazing, but concur with the obnoxiousness of red sox fans. At least the yankees have some self-awareness/pride in being absolute scumbags, yet the sox are just as bad yet like to position themselves as the good guys?

Everyday I watch Mookie Betts play I get the pleasure of watching a perennial mvp go out there and play killer baseball every day, and the schadenfreude of knowing it is at the expense of the red sox franchise.

This O's/Ray's series is so much fun right now too, really hoping the O's can get these last two games to have a confident lead in the division going to the end of the year.

Apologies for some unforgiveable writing in the above post, that was painful to re-read

nationals had gone 103 straight series (of at least three games) without a sweep . . . until today

their last was against the pirates in june 2021

Ugly fucking series for the Giants, didn’t even want to look to see how they hit Webb that hard

The Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers are finalizing a trade that would send superutilityman Kiké Hernandez to the Dodgers, sources tell ESPN.

He has spent most of the 2023 season at shortstop but can play second base and center field as well.

RIP big man, LA needed a cocky underperformer

apparently boston gets “two upper level minor league relievers”

i’m guessing arroyo will be taking his last canter around the corral once story returns, with pablito &/or chang at second. too bad they’re both righties.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 25 July 2023 21:21 (eleven months ago) link

He’s gonna do a Brasier and start playing amazing again in LA

Vry excited for post season Kiké in Dodger blue again. Choosing to believe he was a sleeper agent with the Sox and is going to turn it back on. We’re due for a reclamation project to go right after how Syndegaard went

hrep (H.P), Tuesday, 25 July 2023 23:54 (eleven months ago) link

does Jason Heyward not count?

The Yellow Kid, Wednesday, 26 July 2023 00:00 (eleven months ago) link

He definitely counts, but normally we go 4-5 on reclamation projects, not 1-1. David Peralta and Miguel Rojas haven’t become the Dodger superstars we were hoping too

Never heard of them. Get Up Kids were from KCMO but that's clear across the state and more importantly: Royals territory.

Was Jack McDowell's band somewhat in that vein? ("Alternative," says Wikipedia.) Maybe they can reunite.

clemenza, Wednesday, 26 July 2023 16:33 (eleven months ago) link

okay, I found a (very) loose connection:

Scott Radinsky pitched 44 games for the Cards in 99-00.

He was the singer for Scared Straight* which could be considered proto-emo in the same manner as The Descendents might be.

*later known as 10 Foot Pole, and Scott also sang for Pulley.

Happ accidentally hit Contreras with his backswing. Didn’t seem malicious.

The stove is hot today. Why do the Dodgers always get what they want?

Bee OK, Friday, 28 July 2023 20:15 (ten months ago) link

the dodgers getting lance lynn and joe kelly is a win for everyone else

mookieproof, Friday, 28 July 2023 20:18 (ten months ago) link

Lol, one can hope

Bee OK, Friday, 28 July 2023 20:26 (ten months ago) link

"Why do the Dodgers always get what they want?"

Something to do with the allure of blue, or the allure of green, one of the two.

clemenza, Friday, 28 July 2023 20:31 (ten months ago) link

What prompted that statement is Lance Lynn had the Dodgers as one of the teams that he had on his no trade list. They got him anyways.

Bee OK, Friday, 28 July 2023 20:46 (ten months ago) link

Playing in the country's second largest market, a much friendlier one than the largest? That's got to be appealing.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 28 July 2023 21:01 (ten months ago) link

lol yes

a love song for connor wong (gyac), Friday, 28 July 2023 21:14 (ten months ago) link

Oh yeah Trayce Thompson went the other way, season really on a decline since he hit three bombs off the Diamondbacks the first week of the season. Plus I guess the Dodgers have Kiké now who is a better right handed outfielder with an equally marginal bat

a love song for connor wong (gyac), Friday, 28 July 2023 21:18 (ten months ago) link

Laugh now, but you wait for the one two punch of lynn to Kelly in the 9th and 10th inning of game 7 this year

hrep (H.P), Friday, 28 July 2023 21:28 (ten months ago) link

What prompted that statement is Lance Lynn had the Dodgers as one of the teams that he had on his no trade list.

That is an odd about-face. Maybe he's laying the groundwork for a career in politics.

clemenza, Friday, 28 July 2023 21:28 (ten months ago) link

In that scenario, it will be the first World Series ever lost via a wild pitch. Dodgers therefore win by setting new World Series records to the dismay of the rest of the baseball world

hrep (H.P), Friday, 28 July 2023 21:31 (ten months ago) link

Serious question: why would the Dodgers ever be on someone’s no-trade clause?

hrep (H.P), Friday, 28 July 2023 21:31 (ten months ago) link

The Dodgers are gambling pennies hoping to make a dollar. It’s a respectable enough gambit

hrep (H.P), Friday, 28 July 2023 21:33 (ten months ago) link

True, it's silly

Bee OK, Friday, 28 July 2023 21:35 (ten months ago) link

Serious question: why would the Dodgers ever be on someone’s no-trade clause?

it's just a way of gaining leverage. lance lynn doesn't want to play for the royals, but the royals would never trade for him, so he doesn't have to worry about them. put all the good teams on your no-trade list and you can essentially control where you want to go
