Mets must have sent some money the other way if those prospects are halfway decent. Too into this now, getting notifications about this trade and banging an imaginary table going WHAT’S! THE! RETURN!

The Mets will receive OF Drew Gilbert from the Astros in the deal for Verlander, per source, plus at least one other propsect. It's not known how much money the Mets will send to Houston.— Mark Feinsand (@Feinsand) August 1, 2023

verlander was solid for the mets but his decline in strikeouts bodes ill
i can't imagine why anyone would trade for rich 'immaculate grid ringer' hill. i mean god bless him and sure he's cheap but also he's basically replacement level, and it's not like you can hide him on an expanded roster anymore

The New York #Mets are sending the #Astros about $54 million in the Justin Verlander trade, one executive said, if Verlander's $35 million option in 2025 becomes vested.Verlander is owed about $93 million, meaning the #Astros would pay Verlander about $29 million for 2 1/3 years— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) August 1, 2023

lol
the power of the no-trade clause. mets are probably lucky to get whatever they got
Several teams were in on Verlander, most notably a Los Angeles Dodgers team with more intriguing prospects to offer. But Verlander held a full no-trade clause and the Astros reportedly held the upper hand thanks to his strong relationship with owner Jim Crane.

'immaculate grid ringer'--love that. I'm going to slighty amend it to "Immaculate Grid Fodder," make an acronym of it--IGF--and use that from now to describe the Rich Hills of the world. (Minimum of five teams before I declare you IGF.)

― clemenza, Tuesday, 1 August 2023 19:54 (eleven months ago) link
Actually, career WAR/# teams yields an IGF index that can be used to measure just how marginal somebody is. It obviously wouldn't be fair to describe Rickey Henderson as IGF.
Rickey Henderson: 111.2/9 teams = 12.36Rich Hill: 17.9/12 teams = 1.49
Making Rich Hill about nine times more marginal than Rickey Henderson (and true IGF--will have to figure out where to set that bar).

i'm happy that rich hill went from a major league washout to an obscenely wealthy journeyman based on his admittedly always intriguing strikeout rate and being a crafty lefty, sort of a cross between francisco liriano and jamie moyer.

Rich Hill is one of the most aesthetically pleasing pitchers in the sport when he is on. His 45 degree MASSIVE looping curveball paired with his right on the upper corner 88mph fastball, to me it’s like the platonic ideal of a pitcher. His games were must watch TV for me when he was on the Dodgers (even over Kershaw, god forbid!). He is also the only reasonable argument against adopting the DH. Hill on the bases after getting a knock was a thing of beauty.
Very excited for post season Rich. As mentioned up thread, he deserves a ring and will be the only reason in my life that I ever cheer for the Braves

Rich actually would have been a perfect Dodgers pickup this deadline considering our need for inning’s eaters atm (and our other moves showing we are going in for cheap/bad with some upside). Based on the reception Joe Kelly just got back at Dodgers Stadium, the love Hill would have got might have been the secret stuff to get his A-game back. Alas

The Mets are paying a combined $35MM of Verlander’s 2023-24 salary, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post. They’d pay half of his $35MM salary in 2025 if his option vests. In all, they’re paying as much as $52.5MM of the nearly $93MM that could still be paid out on his deal, pending that option.

Max Scherzer did not think he would be traded. He was not, in his words, “itching to jump ship.” But he said he agreed to waive his no-trade clause when Mets owner Steve Cohen and general manager Billy Eppler informed him the team was taking a step back next season and building more for the future.“I talked to Billy,” Scherzer told The Athletic. “I was like, ‘OK, are we reloading for 2024?’ He goes, ‘No, we’re not. Basically our vision now is for 2025-2026, ‘25 at the earliest, more like ‘26. We’re going to be making trades around that.’“I was like, ‘So the team is not going to be pursuing free agents this offseason or assemble a team that can compete for a World Series next year?’ He said, ‘No, we’re not going to be signing the upper-echelon guys. We’re going to be on the smaller deals within free agency. ‘24 is now looking to be more of a kind of transitory year.’”- from Ken Rosenthal, The Athletic

Smells like . . . victory.
Even better that the same can be said of the Mets.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 1 August 2023 23:09 (eleven months ago) link
it's kinda funny that scherzer is torching the mets on the way out -- historically the mets fire the first shots -- but one big reason they're folding is because max himself put up a 102 ERA+ and allowed a league-leading 23 homers for $43m
lol the reliever the yankees picked up is a free agent at the end of the year. i've long thought that brian cashman gets unfairly shit upon, but enough is enough
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 1 August 2023 23:13 (eleven months ago) link
idk, i think the mets are being fairly smart? they went for it by getting scherzer and verlander, it didn't work, and they moved on. they're both almost done; there's no reason to think that they would be stronger contributors next year. so they got what they could for them. cohen can afford it all, but there's no point in pouring money down the drain
sometimes you get speedbagged
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 1 August 2023 23:20 (eleven months ago) link
yeah the mets made prudent moves to build for the future when they easily could’ve deluded themselves into running back the same underperforming roster in 2024
yanks didn’t improve in the present or make moves to secure the future

In all seriousness, I inquired about whether Tommy Pham would be a complete non-starter for the Giants. Was told unequivocally that they will not consider anyone with a DV incident in their past, which includes Pham. They consider the Joc slap an assault.— Andrew Baggarly (@extrabaggs) August 1, 2023

There’s literally bad blood between those two. It’s either misleading (and offensive) to label it DV, or there’s some untold story here.
Makes sense from a baseball view not to get him though, do not want to disrupt the locker room. Jock’s a hometown boy, I’d assume he has slightly more sway in that locker room than his stats suggest
― hrep (H.P), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 00:12 (eleven months ago) link
there's literally bad blood between those two because tommy pham is a tightly wound asshole
not ideal to add the D to the V given that actual DV victims have suffered far worse than being slapped, but that guy is a loose cannon and i respect not wanting him on your team
anyway tommy pham is 35 and will be out of baseball soon. and his blend of resentment/aggression is going to be bad news in the real world
