Who, me? I live in Atlanta, and if I have ever listened to WFAN it was while I was living in NYC in the early 90s, and then only by chance. I was mostly being a smartass, but seriously, the New York teams are so easy to hate. They (and especially the Yankees) are like the Duke of major league baseball.

I'm just looking at the boxscore, wasn't following the game, but to me that's a good snapshot of why Scherzer's so great: there's dominant Scherzer (and Verlander, and Kershaw), but there's also the guy who has games where he doesn't have much, and he'll (and they'll) go out and still get you to the sixth inning with a chance to win. Not to get all Jack Morris about it...I wish the guy the best--wildly overpaid, of course, but one of the best reasons to watch baseball the past decade.

So this White Sox start was interesting - he gave up two hits right away to pitches well outside the zone and then seemed to come unmoored really quick after giving up an eight pitch walk. Meltdown ensued. However in his next few innings he made pretty quick work of the lineup after settling.

Scherzer is really interesting to watch as a character cos all pitchers are intense on the mound but he takes it to another level. I know everyone knows this but he is something else.

I actually watched his start against the Red Sox last week. He was fascinatingly erratic, getting good hitters like Devers and Turner out without much effort. When he decides to go hard after a hitter in the zone, it can be great to watch. He gave up three homers that game, two to Casas, and the second homer was kind of a classic Scherzer battle. He’d previously given up a walk and a hr to Casas in 2/2 and then on the third he started off throwing outside, came in to challenge, threw the exact same pitch in almost the exact same location twice and…I’m not sure what he expected to happen.

But that’s what makes a great a great, he would probably consider it an insult to walk a guy. Tim Lincecum always pitched to Paul Goldschmidt even though Goldschmidt absolutely killed him at the plate. Pitching is a mental game above all, and Scherzer wouldn’t be Scherzer if he didn’t step on the mound and believe that he could get anyone out on the day.

I saw Rangers fans floating the idea that he wouldn't come to Texas because of politics - obviously bullshit but Scherzer being a lib was a surprise. Dude has Resting Conservative Face.

I reckon he’s a “lib” in the same way most “liberal” MLB players are - ie still pretty right wing on economic issues, but yeah, by the low standards of professional baseball players? Probably doesn’t hurt that he pays a lot less tax there though.

If there's one thing I don't get it's why a guy making tens of millions a year would care about how much tax he pays.

the tax situation for pro athletes is mildly interesting, since they have to pay taxes in each city/state they play in (certainly still benefits for no-income tax home states for 81 games). The paperwork required to do 25 states of income tax!

Wow the theory is true. I honestly think the way they handle injuries is disgraceful, Judge said fairly plainly before coming back that he’d be playing through pain and Boone is still - still! - playing him in right field. It seems incredibly irresponsible. Concussion is pretty bad though, hopefully it’s not too serious for him.

it's been a very unfortunate pattern for years. the yankees downplay injuries and do not communicate them properly to media and fans.

this is probably the worst one yet, because it was clear for literal months that something was very wrong with rizzo.

given the seriousness of this kind of head injury, multiple people should lose their jobs here

Yeah even if you don’t assume he wouldn’t have had a little slump or skid at some point, people online were constantly saying he hadn’t looked right since that collision. I am honestly shocked they never checked him out after that. It’s grotesque.

Would any other mlb team do this? Legitimate question. I really think the Yankees culture is the most fertile to breed this sort of negligence. Poor Rizzo, I hope he can get back to his old self soon for his own sake

I greatly dislike Germán as previously mentioned but the details in the alcoholism story are wild and I’m like, is this really the best way to handle a drunk pitcher?
