It would be an easier sell if he had a bit more consistency. Outside of his two cy young years he’s never made more than 30 starts in a season, and his overall results in non cy years have been good-not-great.

― Roman Anthony gets on his horse (gyac), Monday, 18 March 2024 00:19 (three months ago) link
On the subject of Snell - Seattle, Snell is constantly liking and commenting on Mariners photos and has said he’d like to play there to people who asked him iirc. Park makes sense for him but ownership is cheap as fuck and they have a rotation and depth in the minors. I couldn’t see it happening unless he gave a substantial hometown discount and they traded Miller or Woo for riches.

I mean it's all conjecture how the boras (or any agent)/client relationship works right? In some cases, boras could have seriously swayed a player towards more money, in some cases lest, in some cases he was just a face for the clients whims. What he is in Snell's case? Who knows
― H.P, Monday, 18 March 2024 00:24 (three months ago) link
*less.
Shasta not wrong in suggesting boras has a vested interest in getting the most money and so has a hand to play as well. I'd say the hand has been played poorly by boras in this instance based on Snell's rejection of the 150/5 rejection.

Seattle needs a hitter way more than they need a SP, I think. Miller and especially Woo seem like keepers to me.

it's all conjecture how the boras (or any agent)/client relationship works right?
i suppose, but it’s the player’s life and it’s the player’s signature that goes on the contacts
what’s *really* open to conjecture is that while we can quantify every tiny aspect of blake snell’s performance, and we know what signing him would do to certain teams’ luxury taxes, we have no idea exactly how profitable MLB teams are (besides ‘probably much more so than they’d like us to think’). would signing snell make the yankees (or astros, or mariners) take a net loss this season? i very much doubt it. obviously teams have to make choices and prioritize when building rosters, but i’ll bet an owner’s definition of ‘minimum acceptable profit’ is very different from that of a fan
― mookieproof, Monday, 18 March 2024 01:55 (three months ago) link
i think we know enough about the finances of mid market teams to say that tacking on a $20m+ salary absolutely could swing a profit into a loss. when whether the owners should care about that is a diff question, but i think it’s safe to say that a lot of MLB teams are making less than $20m in profit in most individual seasons

I knew he was coming but started to get worried.
I went to his splits page to see what his line was at PacBell only to learn he's only pitched there 4x, small sample size but on one hand he was pretty dominant yet on the other hand it was the Giants lol.

Two time Cy Young Award winners from Seattle and the Giants. Oracle probably suits him a lot more than Minute Maid or Yankee Stadium. Now the Giants have 3.5 SP which was more than they had last year. Interesting combo of Webb and Snell; the guy who posts and the guy who doesn’t. I can’t actually remember who’s in the pen this year but they’d better be good.

I think most players are inclined to take the highest offer, and don't particularly care where they play. I don't think Boras has to sway them to take the money.
At the other extreme, if a player makes it known that he really wants to play for his hometown team, then that kills his market and limits what Boras can do for him.

Ah sorry cached message & new zing. It’s funny because Snell was posting on his Instagram page about the little league team in Seattle he sponsors and was apparently with them on Sunday. I feel even if he has a great season and opts out at the end of the year, are his FA chances going to be much better coming off a Cy Young season with a relatively poor free agent class?Or maybe two great seasons back to back will help his case…though he’ll be another year older and extremely unlikely to get that seven year deal he wanted.

like the trade for the yanks. dj will be out for a bit, who knows how effective he will be when he comes back. berti adds a lot of juice on the base paths and can play multiple positions in the infield.
not just dj, oswald peraza is out at least 6-8 weeks, and they had literally zero depth behind them at 3rd

rortvedt was more of a theoretical yankee than anything. he was always either hurt or in triple a. cole's personal catcher was *united states wbc catcher* kyle higashioka, traded to the pads in the soto trade

I’m sure we (not necessarily you?) had this conversation before and the Yankees moved Higgy off Cole’s days in May: https://theathletic.com/4832994/2023/09/05/yankees-gerrit-cole-personal-catcher/?source=user_shared_article
When Trevino needed season-ending surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right wrist in late July, the Yankees summoned Rortvedt, immediately pairing him with Cole. The Yankees had stopped starting Higashioka behind the plate for Cole after Cole gave up five runs in back-to-back starts in late May.

Kinda suprised to see the Dodgers break their rule of "short term high avg" deals which was the status quo for the Andrew Friedman years up until Mookie. No one got an over 5yr contract till that point. Sure of course your break that rule for Mookie. Sure you break that rule for Ohtani. Maybe you break that rule for Yamamoto??? But now breaking it for Will Smith? It's the definition of an "underpay now, overpay in 5+ years time" contract, the opposite of the high yield rookie extension contracts that are in fashion these days. Friedman really changing his modus operandi

will smith is a great player but he turns 29 in 10 minutes and it's insane to give a catcher a contract through his age-38 season
that said, $14m/yr is fine, and they can afford it, and i guess they can waive him when his body and/or brain fall apart
anyway, good for him -- i like him
― mookieproof, Thursday, 28 March 2024 03:50 (two months ago) link
Yep. With the deferrals it's probably like 12.5~ on the luxury tax too for the life of the deal? Insanely reasonable. Doesn't seem optimal to have both him and Ohtani doing the same 10 years together. No real space at DH for when Will's body does fall apart. The Dodgers love having people play at multiple positions (often to their detriment) so maybe they try shift him to 1b once Freddie is out of town? His bat is so valuable, you want to keep finding a spot for him
― H.P, Thursday, 28 March 2024 03:53 (two months ago) link
I like Will Smith a lot too. This contract seems to be all about AAV because 10 years is ridiculous.
