They're pretty good against teams not named the Dodgers and Phillies

I forget when announcer Duane Kuiper first stated his "Giants Baseball... Torture" line, maybe as early as 2002 but definitely in the 2010s...

SFGate says 2010.

The most galling defeat came under dark and drizzling skies at Petco Park on April 20. Jonathan Sanchez dominated the Padres, holding them to one hit while striking out 10 in seven innings. But the Giants were just as stymied by Mat Latos, a hulking right-hander with platinum blond hair and a hard fastball that traveled straight downhill. The Giants managed just four hits in his seven innings, none of them coming at opportune times in a 1–0 loss. It was the 29th time the Giants held an opponent to one hit or fewer in a nine-inning game in their San Francisco era. It was the first time in those 53 seasons that they lost. “I can’t say I’ve been in a game like this,” said Bochy, who remained stoic in front of the press but began spewing blue language as soon as the reporters filed out of his office. “No way we should’ve lost tonight’s game.” A day later, broadcaster Duane Kuiper continued to ruminate on all the unbelievably wasted opportunities in the 1–0 loss—including a leadoff triple from Nate Schierholtz in the eighth inning—and he opened the telecast with a quick recap. Then he stared into the camera and used the only word he could to summarize the situation. “Giants baseball,” he said. One beat. Two beats. “Torture.”

Nothin like it!

brimstead, Sunday, 26 May 2024 23:37 (one month ago) link

I remember that game and watched it live. It was as brutal as described. It's amusing how viral the "torture" line became after, and I feel Grant Brisbee, with his McCovey Chronicles blog and forum at the time, fueled its popularity and cult status.

octobeard, Monday, 27 May 2024 17:03 (four weeks ago) link

Speaking of torture, this last question in the mailbagg (over something I hadn’t noticed) made me laugh:

Hey Baggs, it looks like the Giants changed their base hit ‘celebration’ from a motion that resembles pulling a hood or mask over the head and zippering the mouth to a simple salute. Couple of questions: Why the change? Why the salute? Was the first celebration an homage to Pat Burrell’s appearance as The Machine? — Michael H.

I have no idea what you’re talking about. Who is The Machine?

This team is on fire and so much fun to watch.

I have probably jink it.

When this team went on their 10 game road trip through Boston, Philadelphia and Colorado it was gloom and doom. They were a bad team, But something happened and they are coming together. Playing the best teams in the league with the Phillies and Yankees coming into town will prove if this team is real or not.

Took two out of three against the best team, Phillies, can they do the same against the Yankees?

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2024 22:00 (three weeks ago) link

Doesn't help missing LWJ. Maybe! They have a vibe going.

octobeard, Friday, 31 May 2024 22:06 (three weeks ago) link

Well that sucked

Bee OK, Sunday, 2 June 2024 23:31 (three weeks ago) link

Time to feed on the Diamondbacks and Rangers but probably won't happen.

Bee OK, Sunday, 2 June 2024 23:46 (three weeks ago) link

When Duvall is blowing two runs leads in the ninth then you know you have a problem.

Bee OK, Monday, 3 June 2024 00:07 (three weeks ago) link

Sorry, devastating loss today.

Bee OK, Monday, 3 June 2024 00:07 (three weeks ago) link

All they had to do was win one more to go 3 - 3 but instead lost four in a row with the devastating loss in the last game.

Bee OK, Monday, 3 June 2024 01:33 (three weeks ago) link

Talk about potentially fumbling a bag, Doval apparently turned down a $50 million dollar deal last year. He keeps this up he'll be a setup man by the end of this season. He's got electric stuff but I've never felt he had "it" to be an all star closer. Today along with the Mets game could get into his head. Curious how things move forward.

octobeard, Monday, 3 June 2024 02:12 (three weeks ago) link

But ya, devastating loss, not just for the fact the bartender at Finnegan's was rooting for the Yankees dammit

octobeard, Monday, 3 June 2024 02:13 (three weeks ago) link

Arson Judge is from Linden (~90 miles east of SF) so he may have had some family/hometown motivation but the final series slashes:

Arson: .600/.692/1.500 = 2.192 OPS
Soto: .500/.462/1.167 = 1.628 OPS

The fact that both Judge & Soto hard-passed on SFG's offers and then proceeded to just launch bombs in the so-called pitcher's park (it was pretty windy all week but still) cannot feel good.

Mrs. Ippei (Steve Shasta), Monday, 3 June 2024 16:19 (three weeks ago) link

Soto was traded, he’s never been in a position to accept any offer

I think I posted it further up this thread but he’s been very patchy since like last September.

Didn't Soto exercise his no-trade clause against TOR & SFG? IIRC was circa peak-Boras winter meetings in the hot stove thread... Heyman was involved in the leak lol.

Mrs. Ippei (Steve Shasta), Monday, 3 June 2024 16:55 (three weeks ago) link

Soto’s still under team control until the end of the year. He doesn’t have a no trade clause. The biggest impediment was that the Padres weren’t going to trade him to a division rival, especially when the Giants didn’t have enough major league ready pitching to send back.

They had to win one. They need to be better but they are just average. Will keep watching and hoping for a good summer but it needs to start now.

I cut the cord this week, I mean fully cut as I don't even have YouTube TV. So steaming baseball is going to have to go farther than ever.

I was so frustrated tonight, when the Astros went up by two in the bottom of the 10th. It just seemed over but they did come back.

WOW.

“I tell people all the time: The person I didn’t like left already,” - Dubón

brimstead, Tuesday, 11 June 2024 20:30 (two weeks ago) link

Dubón actually seems like a cool dude, good interviewee

brimstead, Tuesday, 11 June 2024 21:00 (two weeks ago) link

He got a ring on that 22 Astros team too.

octobeard, Tuesday, 11 June 2024 21:40 (two weeks ago) link

Dubón got absolutely shit on for being upset about the way the Giants were using him. I’m glad to see him thrive even though I hate the Astros

Roman Anthony gets on his horse (gyac), Tuesday, 11 June 2024 21:45 (two weeks ago) link

I wonder who he was talking about? Was it Gabe Kapler?

Bee OK, Tuesday, 11 June 2024 22:16 (two weeks ago) link

When asked about those comments on Monday, Dubón said that his issues solely lay with Kapler.

“I tell people all the time: The person I didn’t like left already,” Dubón said. “For me, that was the only problem I had. I like the guys. I know last year, I didn’t phrase it well saying I wasn’t treated right, but I just didn’t like one guy. That’s it. I’m cool with all the guys over there.”

The change of scenery ended up working out for Dubón. Under former Giants manager Dusty Baker, Dubón won a World Series in 2022, then a Gold Glove in 2023. Dubón is currently enjoying the best offensive season of his career, taking a .297 batting average and 107 OPS+ into the Astros’ series opener against the Giants Monday night.

“You always want to do that with your childhood team and everything,” Dubón said. “Thank God it happened with the Astros. The Astros gave me a chance. Dusty gave me a chance. A Sacramento guy, San Francisco guy gave me a chance to show what I can do. … I’m grateful for the Astros for giving me a chance to go out there and show what I can do.”
