What in the holy hell is going on with Kershaw?

he gave up a lot of homers this season and last night, but they're almost always solo shots. i think he'll be a LOT more careful from here on out (in the way that he's basically lights out when runners are on base). i'm just glad he had some runs to play with last night and hope that's out of his system. nice to see the bullpen be fantastic when they needed to be though.

There's no way he sees the seventh inning again in these playoffs, no matter the score. In last night's game there was no possible good that could have come out of it. It's the start of the series, everyone in the bullpen is fresh, why waste innings from your best pitcher in a blowout?

I'm always interested in stuff like this; not sure if this means anything or not.

For his career, Kershaw is right around league average when it comes to giving up HR with-the-bases-empty vs. with-runners-on. (I looked at 2017/2012/2007, and league-wide the percentage of bases-empty HR was steady at 57-58%.) He was better than the league by seven percent in 2017.

The best at limiting damage is Scherzer: 77% this year, 64% for his career. Sale is the worst of the four: worse than the league this year, much worse for his career (the only percentage on the chart that exceeds 50%). Kluber was very good this year, average for his career.

What this doesn't tell you is how many men were on base when there were runners on. Kershaw for his career: 39/53 HR with one man on, 13/53 with two men on, 1/53 with the bases loaded. So most of those were only good for two runs.

(Actually, Sale was 5% better than the league this year.)

it looks like this table is reporting the share of a pitcher's HRs that were given up with the bases empty vs with runners on - elite pitchers like kershaw have fewer opportunities to do so with runners on base because they allow fewer baserunners. it'd be interesting to see HR% with the bases empty vs with runners on

I think I know what you're saying--how many home runs did each guy give up as a percentage of all the times he faced batters with the bases empty, as opposed to what I did, which was figure out how many of his home runs were with the bases empty. Just wanted to test outdoor miner's comment ("he gave up a lot of homers this season and last night, but they're almost always solo shots")--true last night, but for the season and for his career, Kershaw's basically in line with the rest of the league. But yeah, seeing as these four have fewer runners on to begin with, and almost certainly give up fewer homers overall (don't know about Kershaw this year, he gave up a lot), fewer runs score across the board.

you can find HR/9 numbers with men on base vs bases empty on fangraphs if you go to a player's page and look at their splits. don't care enough to write it all down but looking at kershaw's numbers from this season it looks like there's no difference

huh, certainly can't argue w the facts. guess it was maybe just coincidence the 7 or 8 games i watched him pitch this year (incl. last night's solo shots and that terrible game against the mets in may or june where i seem to recall 3 or 4 solo shots) made it seem that way. . .

I would have made exactly the same assumption myself: he led the NL in ERA, he gave up a lot of HR (a little less than the league average, actually--1.18/9 for Kershaw, 1.23/9 for the league), must have been almost all with the bases empty. It's more what happens when he's not giving up HR, which makes sense; it's really hard to score off him by stringing together two or three hits and walks.

most of his homers he gives up are solo shots, but that's because he more often than not pitches with no runners on base (because he's really good)

I don't want to get bogged down with this during a game, but that's not how I'd say it--most of the homers he gives up are solo shots, yes, but not by a wide margin (60/40, basically), and, as a percentage of the home runs he does give up, he's not much different than a league-average pitcher.

d-backs can only seem to score on HRs so far

Jansen is just a beast. He throws hard and has good movement, but that funky delivery I got to think makes it about impossible to pick up on what he is doing on a pitch.

Dodgers win ugly again -- seven pitchers to get through a game that wasn't all that close. I don't see how they can keep this up throughout the playoffs.

They are probably setup to get a couple extra days off where I got a feeling the Cubs/Nats could go 5, which would have to help.

Arizona had their chance in the ninth with Goldy up as the tying run. But they never really got going in the series. I think they led for about two innings in total. LA is looking like a great team again.
