Rookie Of The Year Awards 2004

Bobby Crosby has yet to get comfortable with the bat in his hand despite some stellar defensive plays (did everybody see that flip throw to one-timer double play in texas?) He's pretty timid calling for flyballs as his two collisions so far this season indicate.

Joe Mauer wowed everyone with 2 games before going into the hospital for knee surgery.

Kaz Matsui's .395 OBP has given the Mets a legitimate leadoff guy but the player whom Ichiro proclaimed "the only player that I've ever faced that was faster than me" has attempted 2 stolen bases only to be gunned down in each attempt.

Khalil Greene, the Jeff Spicoli-lookalike playing SS for the Padres has put up some great #s: .306 BA, .368 OBP, .452 SLG.

Any early guesses on who will take the honors?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 26 April 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

everyone here
talks about this kid chris saenz
like he's mr. god

only one game pitched
but check out his gnarly stats
man I hope he's real

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 26 April 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I just looked
saenz got sent to triple A
brewers: bon3d again

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 26 April 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Laynce Nix of the Walker Texas Rangers (if he's still eligible) (what's with this Dave Delluci in the 5-hole crap?) in the AL, and I'll go w/ Matsui in the NL (if only to offset the taint that schmeared last year's AL ROY vote).

Also, to the anklebiter that decided to start All-Star ballotting THREE WHOLE WEEKS into the season - FHWUQUGAS!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 26 April 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think "Offset the Taint" is the title of the new Gomez album.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 26 April 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Others were less enthused about Saenz, including defending league batting champion Pujols, who said, flatly, "I don't think he has anything. He got lucky, I guess."

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 26 April 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Laynce "Rev. A. W." Nix?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 26 April 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

A local radio "yuk-monkey" put together a little techno track in honor of Mr. Nix entitled, "Give It To Me, Lance."

Give it to me, Lance.
Give it to me, Lance.
Give it to me, Lance.
Push, Push!
(moaning...)

boldbury (boldbury), Monday, 26 April 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, that made Bob Uecker mad. He spent virtually all of the other day's radio broadcast talking about that, how unclassy it was, how some players needed to deal with reality, etc.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 26 April 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect that the Nix song will be reason 998 that I will never, under any circumstances, listen to the Ticket.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

If Kaz plays 150 games and has an OBP close to .400, he should certainly be in the running for NL ROY. Stolen bases, feh!
He was the consensu BP pre-season pick.

It could be someone like Willis last year -- ie, currently in AAA, and ultimately undeserving. In the AL, there's plenty of time for Mauer to take it, especially if the Twins win, but Crosby looks good.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Fine, be that way. But the Ticket is pretty damn funny. Heck, gygax! liked it.

And if you have never listened to the Ticket, then how did you know that's the station I was referring to? Huh, huh?!?

boldbury (boldbury), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I need to get back to Dalla$.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked dallas when i was there, seemed like the kind of place where if you had enough money you could have some real fun. i had fun in deep ellum with almost no money (and no clothes, thank you continental air lines).

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

any AAA guys who are due to get called up soon? David Aardsma was very very hyped here in SF (mid-90s heat, closer for Rice in 2003)... but he throws a straight fastball which doesn't fool anyone at the MLB level.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I need to get back to Dalla$.

Yeah, and you need to do it before I move to Houston in August.

boldbury (boldbury), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I worked TicketStock a couple of years in the mid-90s, that was my last exposure to them.

ESPN radio all the way, but I miss Tony Kornheiser's radio show. :(

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

And 103.3 has a Michael Wilbon clone, which is totally classic.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

And 103.3 has a Michael Wilbon clone, which is totally classic.

Newy?

boldbury (boldbury), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but he doesn't do Wilbon-speak as well as Wilbon.

And I still love Randy Galloway for championing Ann Richards at the risk of alienating every Angry White Male listener in N. Texas.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Hee Seop Choi considered a rookie?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Hee Seop had his rookie eligibility used as a September callup in 2002, if I recall. He spent most of that year injured or in AAA while Fred McGriff pursued his stupid 30 HR streak in a lost season.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

gotta say, pretty
good outing by brandon webb--
sophomore race! GO!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

damn shame about the
grand slam dontrelle just gave up
to b. dallimore

so far, inning 2,
five runs in and no outs yet.
my other team's HOSED

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 1 May 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
any updates on the rookie front?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Make way for the Greek God of Walks, heathens!

I think Texas C Gerald Laird is leading AL rookies in various hitting categories, which is underwhelming. The ROY awards doesn't need any grads from the Pete Sampras School of Public Pizzazz to tarnish its gleam.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Lew Ford?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Laird is currently on the 60-day DL with torn thumb ligaments and is expected to be out even longer than that.

Sucks because he was turning out to be the real deal for the Texas Metrosexuals of the ILBFBL.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Leeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Yeah, he's kosher.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 27 May 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

As a Mets fan, I'd like to take the opportunity to note Kaz Matsui's 10 errors at second -- if that continues, he can't possibly end up ROY. Well, plus he's batting something like .250 now, too.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Zack Greinke could be this year's AL version of Brandon Webb...

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7257

He could get 25 starts, probably just qualify in IP for the ERA title and maybe place high there, but if he keeps winning one out of 4 starts due to absent support, the writers will dis him (although he may not have a Dontrelle to outhype him).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I still say Bobby Crosby gets it, because at this rate unless I'm completely mistaken he'll end up with 25 HR as a shortstop, and ROY voters dig that sort of thing.

I love Greinke though, he just might save my fantasy baseball team (which is currently without a closer, so probably not)

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Baseball Prospectus staff's midseason ROY choices:

AL

1. Bobby Crosby (11 of 13 first-place votes)
2. Zach Greinke
3. Shingo Takatsu
4. Joe Mauer (1)
5. Lew Ford (1)
6. Justin Duchscherer

NL

1. Ryan Madson (3)
2. Khalil Greene (3)
3. Akinori Otsuka (5)
4. Kazuo Matsui (1)
5. Jason Bay (1)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

joe mauer just started his second prolonged stint on the DL so if he could have stayed healthy, it would have been more interesting in the AL.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Rockies rookie 2b Aaron Miles is also having a good year.

earlnash, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

no love for daniel cabrera? most likely looking at 8-3 w/ a 3.05 era after today's game.

coincidentally, he was matched up against greinke who gave up 8 runs in 2 innings. greinke's era skyrocketed up to 4.57. he hasn't really gotten the job done in the w-l department either...no thanks to his offense in part.

j.q. higgins, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Jason Bay all the way!

I also want this John Kruk lookalike on the Mariners (Bucky Jacobsen!) (BUCKY!) to have a sick 2nd half & steal the ROY award from more worthy candidates. (And, as I type this, BJ has trouble digging out a throw.) (But the error's on the SS - s'cool.)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Khalil Greene missing the rest of the year might cost him the NL ROY...

VORP

Khalil Greene 36.9
Jason Bay 32.2
Akinori Otsuka 29.9
Ryan Madson 23.5
David Wright 20.4

Would love to have seen Bay's and Wright's numbers for a full year. BTW, the Mets traded Bay 2 years ago for Steve Reed. *siiigh*

AL (Greinke will be screwed on W-L):

Bobby Crosby 30.7
Zach Greinke 28.6
Justin Duchscherer 25.4
Shingo Takatsu 23.4

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 16 September 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm surprised Duchscherer is still a rookie, as I swear I've been having trouble pronouncing his name for over 2 years.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Would love to have seen Bay's and Wright's numbers for a full year.

How about Madson's?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Greene still deserves it. When the Pads wear their throwback unis he looks less like Spicoli and more like Tanner from Bad News Bears.

briania (briania), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

On the Cubs radio broadcast a couple of nights ago, Pat and Ron agreed that it was between Bay and Greene in the NL.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Cast your ballots (I'll go to 3, which I think is the BBWAA's limit):

AL

1. Greinke
2. Duchscherer
3. Crosby

NL

1. Greene
2. Bay
3. Otsuka

Crosby and Bay will win.
