i didn't say WHAT he was doing, did I?

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG RANDY JOHNSON JUST THREW A PERFECT GAME AGAINST THE RICHMOND BRAVES

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

props to RJ for the 17th perfect game in MLB history.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

But yeah, Marcus Giles would have ate him for lunch...

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it more odd that I'm more curious about how Arizona has 8 hits plus the Braves' 3 errors yet the Dbacks are only up 2?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

that was actually pretty great

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Fear the Mullet.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Broheems, I'm gonna modify the thread title. If you have a problem just say so and I'll remove it.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

see, I didn't jinx him! he owes me big time!!

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

It might be worth noting that Hampton's 9-inning outing was easily he's best start of the year.

Also worth noting another pitching duel at Wrigley: Schmidt vs. Clement. 1-0 Giants in the top of the 8th.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks for the heads up, broheems!
i was just talking about PGs a couple days ago, when ESPN Classic was showing wells's. nice to see the old dudes get 'em because you know they realize how special they are. johnson was a bit muted compared to wells and cone, but that's understandable.

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Schmidt is trying to steal a teeny bit of RJ's thunder!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

(8IP, 1H, 1BB, 13Ks. 133 pitches so I assume he's out... although he did strike out the side to close the 8th.)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(they're leaving him in)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

144 pitches for Schmidt, wish it would've been on TV here. I hope Alou looks back on the 16th win of the season and feels it was worth it.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Randy Johnson lost an OLD SKOOL pitchers duel in his last start 1-0 to Tom Glavine.

The Big Unit now has two no-no's; one in each league like Nolan Ryan, Cy Young and of all people Hideo Nomo.

earlnash, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Got to catch the 7th-9th of Johnson's perfect game, dude was on. I was thinking as the Braves fans were standing and cheering for Johnson in the 9th, in what other sport would the opposition's fans give a standing ovation to an opponent?

Granted, these were Braves fans, so they may have just been attracted to the fair weather on the mound, but still...

Baseball!

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"in what other sport would the opposition's fans give a standing ovation to an opponent?"

Let me introduce you to some Arizona Cardinals fans.

earlnash, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It's easier when there are only 5 people there.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Look how happy Johnson looks.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

He was still hitting 97 with his fastball on Eddie Perez in the 9th. Pretty damn good for a 40-year-old who looks like hell.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

...and of all people Hideo Nomo.

Is Nomo the John Daly of the Major League Baseball?

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

leee made me lafffff.

(whew, i had the day shift today)

maura (maura), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

What a great night of pitching:

Randy Johnson: perfect game
Jason Schmidt: 1 hitter
even Clement and Hampton's losing efforts were season highlights.
Plus: Angels 1, Yankees 0 (11th)

But poor Schmidt, what bad timing for a game like this. But he had a couple other bouts of bad luck in the game. He allowed three baserunners but it's pretty interesting: he walked Alou in the 4th (so there goes the perfect game), Clement got on via a dropped 3rd strike (beating the throw by a half-step)... so how did Michael Barrett, the lone hit, get on?:

With two outs in the fifth, Schmidt thought he got Barrett on a called strike. But plate umpire Tim McClelland called it a ball, giving Barrett one more chance.

"I thought it was a strike at the time," Schmidt said. "It was a close one. It's going to be one of those you think of the rest of your life."

On the next pitch, Barrett hit a grounder just inside the third-base line. Edgardo Alfonzo scrambled for the ball, but Barrett beat his throw to first by a couple of steps.

but damn, 144 pitches. Happy Ice-Pack. Maybe Alou was trying to show-up Dusty.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

This is awesome.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Went to see a friend's co-worker's band and MISSED it, fuckit...

I've heard everything from 14 to 17 perfect games... One of those in the list was a 5-inning rainout, yes? Barker or Witt?

I remember some dope (Yankee fan, natcherly) at a 2001 Series party arguing that RJ wasn't a HOFer. He's eclipsed the likes of Koufax easily, careerwise.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

This made me so happy to watch. I tuned in at the beginning of the game; around the fifth inning, my wife called, and we chatted for awhile until the eighth, when I was like "uhh....listen, baby...I gotta go. Call you back in awhile." She understood.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

You guys and pitch counts. Stop babying pitchers, I say!

Schmidt (4-2) had thrown 123 and 122 pitches in his previous two outings.

"I'm building my arm strength to 200," he said.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Have fun turning a knob when you're 50, Schmidty.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope Schmidt is talking about totals including pre-game bullpen and mid-inning warmups.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

This just in: Dusty Baker has offered to send Sammy Sosa and a starting pitcher of their choice to the Giants in exchange for Jason Schmidt and his rubber arm.

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Gygax!, maybe that number was in Fahrenheit.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)
