Weird Dugout Alignment Question

in some ballparks the home dugout is on the left field side, whereas in others the home dugout is on the right field side. Anybody know any reason for the variation?

i've heard that the home team generally takes the first base side because when a runner is coming home the entire dugout can tell him to slide/run through home. but of course the on-deck batter should be doing this anyway. as for the variation, i have no idea.

i think you should make a list of which parks have home dugouts along third and which ones have them along first.

tangentially related question:
is home plate still always the western-most point of the diamond?
even in dome, or semi-dome stadiums?

home dugouts along third that I know of:

Comiskey
Wrigley

home dugouts along first that I know of:

Yankee
new Phillies stadium

that's all the places I've been in the past 5 years, d00d.

ProPlayer has the home dugout on the 1B line if I recall. I think I remember Heeee sliding toward the home dugout during his inside-the-park HR the other day.

And Fenway's is on the 1B side too, right? Johnny Damon almost hit Bellhorn with a foul ball on ESPN the other night.

SBC Park Mays Field is on the 3b side.

is it a Mississippi River thing?

It's a "whichever dugout is closer to the players' parking lot" deal.
