ESPN Baseball Assface of the Week

Following recent unofficial winners "HR" and Rick Sutcliffe... Over the weekend, Baseball Tonight had one of their dopey features where they ask their jockboy pundits whether players or teams will achieve various Counting Stats goals.

Jeff Brantley: "Bonds might be the only guy in the NL to hit .360, but he won't have enough at-bats to qualify."

They're plate appearances... assface. If Bonds has 302 ABs and 200 walks, he qualifies.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Sutcliffe kept mistaking Jose "the secret weapon" Oquendo for Pujols last night. As for Baseball 2night, Kruk is pretty stupid, but still nowhere near as annoying as Bobby the Cornball Valentine. I think Tony Gwynn and Joe Morgan are the only color guys I can stand.

I am resisting temptation to make a bad joke out of your last sentence, bnw.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:54 (nineteen years ago) link

I used to really like Joe Morgan, but less and less so these days. Partly because of the color commentator's disease of over-explaining, and partly because of his refusal to countenance Moneyballish tactics ever.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 17:20 (nineteen years ago) link

i didn't like morgan before the moneyball fiasco and i didn't like him more after it.

Joe Morgan is in the ESPN Baseball Assface Hall of Fame.

boldbury (boldbury), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 17:33 (nineteen years ago) link

JM's got a statue outside the Bristol HQ, with a plaque featuring a long ellipsis symbolizing all the dead air on Sunday Night Baseball broadcasts that occurs when a Jon Miller comment / joke / question goes right over his head and out the booth.

if there's some sort of ceremony at the end of the season for AssFace of the Year, he should be presented with the Joe Morgan Trophy (Celebrating Great Achievments in AssFacery).

i don't "sit around and fume", but i'm not going to pretend they don't suck, either.

and pls don't do the "if you don't like it, don't watch" thing.

I don't have cable, so I don't see ESPN enough to get annoyed with it.

But I do know that Joe Morgan is an Assface.

I don't particularly like their commentators, but I don't tune into Sunday Night Baseball for that. I tune in to see Billy Koch completely blow a save.

For those of you aren't hockey fans, be grateful, b/c espn seriously uses like billiards announcers to cover nhl games. Its brutal.

no i don't sit around and fume at espn. i sit around and watch baseball on espn and wonder why they team a guy i like a lot (miller) with a guy who makes me turn the game off early if i have nothing invested in the game (morgan).

When I tape BT-- usually the midnight edition -- it goes by so quickly when you can FFWD past the "analysts" and just watch the highlights. (Unfortunately you need some audio info, so you have to countenance Newsboy Ravech chirping "DON'T go there!")

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:39 (nineteen years ago) link

i've taken to listening to records while watching cubs games. the tough part is when i'm at work and i have to listen to ron santo. not only is his homerism a turnoff but he's whiney as hell too. he comes off like a real turd. everyone in this city kisses his ass though.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I can definitely do without Gary Thorne, but I like Clement! And adding John Davidson for the finals was good, even though he giggles like a schoolgirl.

Nothing on this earth is as bad as Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin for Caps games.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, Clement Clement hands of cement and Davidson are okay. Darren Pang is very punchable. But I can even stand Barry Melrose in small doses. (All of them are so hard for the Wings and Avs, it's nauseating.) But it's when they break out the third and fourth string guys during the 1st round of the playoffs that I am wishing I could turn off the announcing and just listen to the game/crowd noise like on ps2.

I think the comedic lowpoint of local hockey broadcasting was seeing Rob Ramage (now jailed on dwi charges I believe) holding a mike up to some Russian broadcasters and giving a Homer-esque comment of "they talk funny talk! hee hee!"

What was last night's winning Sutcliffe Moment? The rant on the inadequacy of MLB's bereavement policy, or saying that Berkman "is entering his prime"? (Wrongo, this has been his prime for a few years, most likely.)

OK, he wasn't as bad as usual, though I had the sound off for half the game.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Morb, here's a link to my Sutcliffe Snapshot during the Cubs / Astros thread. I had the sound off for 2/3rds of the game, and managed to catch a few choice tidbits that had me cringing, too.

And I dunno what happened to Dave O'Brien - I used to think he was one of EPSN's top dogs, but this year (doing ESPN games, or Mets games on WWOR), he's been unlistenable. I think the Mets are bringing him down.

So anyone besides me catch another genius moment on BBTN? "HR" and Brantley both pick Sheffield as AL MVP to date (he's in the top 10 and I appreciate he plays hurt, but uh, A-Rod's a more valuable Bomber), and Reynolds has a moment of lucidity picking Bonds in the NL.

Then Good Ol' Jeff B picks Rolen because "he was doin' it from Day One, when Edmonds and Pujols started slow" and "YOU'LL NEVER SEE HIM DO A PIROUETTE AT THE PLATE AFTER A HOME RUN" (slap at Pujols as well as Bonds?). There were other morsels like "any dad could show his kid how Scott Rolen plays" ... ie, the White Way.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 August 2004 13:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Edmonds is pretty white and I have seen him take plenty o' time in admiring his moon-shots.

Willie McGee is pretty black and he was probably the humblest professional athlete I've ever seen.

Pujols, for what it's worth, never seems to care at all about his own stats (well, until contract time). When he became the first player to hit 30 homers in his first 4 season the other day, he was totally unphased.

In conclusion, Rolen is a stud. Obviously what he has working against him for the mvp is he bats with Pujols in front of him and Jedmonds behind him.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, there figures to be a 3-way Cardinal split, allowing the obvious choice to take it. Unless the Stop Barry movement aligns behind Rolen (who is indeed a stud, just not the MVP).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:27 (nineteen years ago) link

If Bonds batted between Pujols and Edmonds, this wouldn't even be a discussion.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:32 (nineteen years ago) link

can we stop insinuating that ppl who admire scott rolen for playing hard and being humble are racists plz thx

John (jdahlem), Friday, 6 August 2004 16:10 (nineteen years ago) link

btw, i'm a yankees fan and i'd agree on the sheff over a-rod pick. i think most yankees fans would. a-rod's slumps + hitting like complete shit in clutch situations does him in. gary has been a total stud since the calendar turned to may (and he was decent in april, he just didn't have any power).

John (jdahlem), Friday, 6 August 2004 16:14 (nineteen years ago) link

To wit: ARod's RISP line (.212 / .320 / .404 in 87 ABs) is ass compared to Sheffield's (.325 / .438 / .544 in 89 ABs).

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 6 August 2004 16:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Fuck that shit, Manny or Big Papi.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 6 August 2004 16:24 (nineteen years ago) link

If Bonds batted between Pujols and Edmonds, this wouldn't even be a discussion.

But then he'd lose the "he is their entire offense!!!! omg wtf!!!" claim. (ALthough his rbi total would be pretty obscene.) But then Rolen whips him in the field (which is always neglected in the mvp vote). Also the Cardinals have that MOST WINS IN BASEBALL thing.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 6 August 2004 16:47 (nineteen years ago) link

you bring up a good point: Rolen may not even be the most valuable player on the Cards.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 6 August 2004 16:54 (nineteen years ago) link

bonds' home runs are what would get him the vote. he's got 2 less than pujols in 150 less at-bats.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 6 August 2004 16:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Speaking of the big 3...

bnw (bnw), Friday, 6 August 2004 17:04 (nineteen years ago) link

bnw (bnw), Friday, 6 August 2004 17:05 (nineteen years ago) link

RISP varies wildly from year to year, and it don't mean shit to me. Both the number of RISP opportunities and how many wins yer team has ... well, you know this argument, and I'm tired of it.

I realize that "styling" is done by some Caucasian players. Let's just say Brantley is guilty of dumb analysis. (And there are rational arguments one can make for Rolen... at least in any year where a guy didn't have a .600ish OBP.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 August 2004 17:12 (nineteen years ago) link

so it doesn't matter that sheff has meant more to and won more games for the yankees than any other player, because, well, there's a lot of "random noise" there, right? i think, when considering the mvp, we should eliminate this randomness as much as possible by regressing everyone's season to the mean, and simply vote for the most talented player every year. because, after all, he (being the best player) _deserves_ it, and were it not for randomness over the course of an inferior sample size (known as "a season"), _would_ have won it. yeah, you're right morbs, outliers and flukish performances shouldn't effect who gets the vote for mvp. wouldn't be fair.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:24 (nineteen years ago) link

i mean, scott rolen for mvp?? pshaw. his luck with RISP is just the start of this idiotic movement. the man is a career .897 OPS hitter! he's hitting 45 points over his career batting average! he's already only 5 home runs away from his career high! this is a FLUKE, everybody! by every piece of data we have available, this is an outlier, a career year, LUCK. does anyone think scott rolen is _really_ a .333 hitter, or a consistent 1.000 OPS performer on par with the likes of ramirez or pujols??

this man should not even be a candidate.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Tsk tsk, caricaturing the adversary! I loves the Scottie, I'd likely put him, Pujols and Edmonds 2-3-4 to Bonds...

And a season's a fine sample size. I think Sheff and A-Rod have "won more games for the Yankees" than any other players and are both legit MVP candidates. If they're tied in value (hey, Rod leads Sheff in VORP 46.5-46.0 today), the tiebreaker is that 3B is a more crucial position and a future HOF SS moved there for the good of all!

And neither of them have been as good as Guillen, Vlad, Tejada, and arguably Hafner or Manny. (Maybe Guillen hasn't "won more games" for Detroit than the Yankee stars have, but that's *chorus* penalizing a guy for his teammates.)

And since the Cards and Yanks will likely win their divisions by 10-15 games, there's the argument that no one star of theirs is indispensable; hence none are MVPs. But that's a bullshit argument. It'd help Bonds for the Giants to gain a playoff berth on the final weekend, of course.

Who'd rather see me & Dahlem on cable than those yutzes in Bristol?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:46 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm not (just) caricaturing, i'm pointing out that the "RISP is luck and shouldn't matter" argument is the bs that it is by logical extension! if we're going to regress (and i'm sorry if i'm not using all these math terms correctly but you know what i mean) everyone's performance w/ RISP over a season to the mean because of the sample size, why shouldn't we do the same for everyone's performance over a season, period? sure, batters often don't hit their "real" value w/ RISP during a season, but they don't hit their "real" value over a season, period, all the time as well. why shouldn't we punish them for that when we consider the mvp award?
(answer: because we're not GMs trying to find actual value, we're fans trying to figure out how many games this guy has won for his team this year)

sheffield's performance in the clutch has won us games, a-rod's has cost us. like it or not, fair or not, it matters.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:40 (nineteen years ago) link

the problem with the argument is that people confuse "what they did this year" with "what they should have done according to what kind of player they are and what will they do in the future?"

If Sheff has won more games, it's probably more luck than skill, and bad luck for A-Rod to a large extent, but it's what they did in those situations. Billy Beane shouldn't use it to determine what player will be better in the future, but for an MVP award it's a good criteria.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Feh, clutch... There are intuitive ways that positive offensive events that don't occur "in the clutch" contribute to winning games ... e.g., A-Rod gets a couple hits in scoreless innings that enable Sheffield to get an extra PA to tie or win a game. By your method, why not break it down further to Close and Late stats?

The BBWAA don't hardly look at RISP, I bet, but largely RBI for MVP and wins for Cys. (Slight deviation for Bonds recently, but that's when the other stats are elephantine.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 August 2004 20:13 (nineteen years ago) link

And my point was that Brantley using "styling" as a major factor in an MVP debate is assfacial.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 August 2004 20:18 (nineteen years ago) link

debating these awards is really kind of like debating the Oscars, they're both equally pointless.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 6 August 2004 20:38 (nineteen years ago) link

bnw (bnw), Friday, 6 August 2004 21:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 August 2004 21:16 (nineteen years ago) link

"why not break it down further to Close and Late stats?"

indeed, why not? i do; that's part of what i meant by "performance in the clutch".

gear post #1: my point exactly
gear post #2: debating these awards is part of being a baseball fan! and it's a lot more interesting than the freaking oscars!!

doc, if you really wanna play by the rules, "styling", as you call it, is one of the very few definite criteria mvp voters are to take into consideration. (it's almost impossible to find the criteria but i'm pretty sure "conduct and character" are on there)

John (jdahlem), Friday, 6 August 2004 21:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I should have said that the AWARDS are pointless and should have clarified that the debate is fun.

Somehow, we missed this:

"I'm just always under the impression that the guy with the most wins is the best pitcher.... People at ESPN are into numbers and they say, 'Well, Santana's ERA is better and Schilling had more run support.' But what's the big thing for a pitcher? Win 20 games, right? You never hear, 'I want to win the ERA title.' They want to win."

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 22 November 2004 21:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Well baseball is a team game ya know. Usually if you have more wins than your team is winning more and well all the associated goodness that goes with that. So pitchers probably do care more about wins than ERA, but obv that doesn't mean that wins should get more weight than ERA or WHIP or whatever when it comes to individual awards or anything (although obv it gets some weight. . . poor Randy Johnson.)

tom candiotti, sidebar to this: It's an honor to be on the Hall of Fame ballot. But I won't ever put myself in the same category as the other guys on the ballot who will make the Hall or come close to making it.

I tend to downplay my career. But being on the ballot gives me the opportunity to look back on my 16 years as a major-league pitcher and realize, hey, I had a pretty good run.

Now, if I had John Kerry's money, I might have a chance to be elected! Seriously, it's great just to be mentioned in the same breath with the other players on the ballot.

One first-time eligible player who stands out is Wade Boggs. The 12-time All-Star has 3,010 hits. That 3,000-hit plateau is a significant accomplishment. Boggs also holds the AL record with seven straight 200-hit seasons.

I faced Boggs often during my career. He came up in 1982, one year before me. He was always a tough out.

Boggs had tremendous bat control, and he would pepper that wall in Fenway Park when he was with the Red Sox.

A little-known fact about Boggs is that, for a position player, he had a pretty good knuckleball.

As a knuckleball pitcher, I could appreciate that. I remember once during a pregame situation Boggs threw the ball toward me — and it was a knuckleball. "How was that?" he asked me. He even threw two-plus innings in two career outings as a pitcher. I called him up after one of those outings and told him, "Hey, good job with your knuckleball."

Boggs was fun to play against. I wish him the best in his candidacy for the Hall of Fame. - this is the kind of insight only a former player can provide.

Those games turned out to be not so meaningless after all. The Cards' magic number hasn't moved in 5 days.

Yeah, the Astros are still a longshot, but this series definetly provided some drama. If nothing else, it made clear that even if the Cardinals hang on and win the division, they're toast in the first round.

And get a load of those crucial Thurs games: Yanks-Orioles, Toronto-Detroit. Who handles their scheduling worse, Fox or ESPN?

It's really funny how even Karl freakin' Ravech feels comfortable scoffing at Steve Phillips' "analysis" these days (last week: Chisox make playoffs; yesterday: Dodger veterans "step up" and win them the wild card).

(The Astros are providing a little tease, but the odds are still long. Plus Jeff Brantley is predicting Clemens pitches another meaningful game later this week, so there's the kiss of death.)

even if the Cardinals hang on and win the division, they're toast in the first round

Certainly possible, but again, there's no historical correlation between finishing badly and postseason results.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 September 2006 12:34 (seventeen years ago) link

There is, however, a historical correlation between one's pitching staff sucking Jimmy Dean sausages and getting bounced in the first round.

I can't recall if it was Kruk (who was very animated) or Ravech (who did his best to get the discussion back on track) who said something like "I can't believe you made that about you!" after Phillips began his talk about the Tigers with "Well I'm a Detroiter, I grew up in Detroit, so..."

Ravech: AL MVP?
Kruk/Brantley: Jeter Jeter Jeter
Phillips: Morneau
Kruk/Brantley: WHAT? YOU ARE CRAZY, HE'S NOT CLUTCH

Morneau's stats with RISP this year: .323/.402/.573; .310/.429/.517 with RISP/2 out. Also hitting a reasonably-clutch .299/.343/.540 close/late. Not as sick as Jeter's, but "not clutch" my ass.

Then again, Mauer's hitting .408/.547/.653 with RISP/2 out and is Jeter's superior in almost every conceivable statistic (projected to the same # of ABs or otherwise) except steals and runs scored. (Another overlooked fact: Mauer's 3rd in the AL in intentional walks, behind Ortiz and Guerrero.)

Anyway, I digress from my original point, which is that Kruk and Brantley are idiots and also really unpleasant to look at.

This week's award goes to the knucklehead(s) who decided to have the career stats run from latest (at the top) to earliest (at the bottom).

vasgergian is Bad
a-rod is okay but gets repetitive and i don't really like his voice
mendoza is fine but can't get a word in when a-rod keeps going on about how larry rothschild needs to go out there and calm him down

mookieproof, Monday, 6 August 2018 13:07 (five years ago) link

Mendoza spoke at the Saberseminar this weekend, and she said her first year the producer went over her performance with her exhaustively on Monday or Tuesday. I wonder if A-Rod got the same treatment?

i'd like to give them something of a pass as the pace of that game was excrutiating. arod needs to be less of a motormouth and vasgergian needs to actually take the reins of the conversation sometimes.

vasgersian has a nice voice. I love A rod and mendoza, they actually like baseball which is a plus

k3vin k., Monday, 6 August 2018 14:21 (five years ago) link

i'm sure a-rod gets the same treatment -- everything i've seen talks about how eager to learn he is. and he is pretty good considering he's never done it before

vasgergian does have a nice voice. but looool at 'don't look now, but the yankees are bringing the tying run to the plate' in the top of the ninth when the yanks were *up* three. also i don't really trust dudes who go for the meticulous unshaven look
