Teams on the upswing:
Texas
Detroit
Tampa
Cleveland
Milwaukee

Cleveland has gone to a youth movement as they did in the early 90s and it seems to be starting to pay some dividends. Their bullpen as noted is one of the worse, but that lineup is scoring some runs (3rd in MLB in runs scored). Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia are the beginnings of a workable starting staff. They are playing well enough now to maybe stay in the race, but with a couple of relivers they could win the Central next year.

Detroit went out and got some solid vets to fill their many holes. Their pitching is still very bad, but the hitting and defense have improved. They are better, but I don't see them contending any time soon.

Texas is a suprise. They always could hit, but they have a young lineup that could be a terror for years to come. Pitching is still shallow but they made a couple of wise pickups with guys like Kenny Rogers. I will be suprised if they can hold off the Angels or the A's, but they are only a couple of arms away from being a very good team, they still might win the division.

Tampa is hitting a ton of late and their starting pitching is improved in the past month. It will be interesting to see where they go, they still have a couple of gaping holes in their lineup, but they need an ace starter and a couple of bullpen arms before they could be a contender.

Milwaukee does not score a ton of runs, but their pitching has been much improved. It might be a fluke.

Teams in the ditch:
Arizona
Montreal (special case)
Seattle

What would you do to improve some of these clubs (or your favorite team)?

earlnash, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

SF is a team I really don't get how they win, this year or last year.

They only have two good players -- Bonds and Schmidt.

The rest of their club is so non-descriptly average or below, I cannot figure how they pull it off. What is funny is that they keep winning and jettisoning decent/good players like Kent, Russ Ortiz, Reggie Sanders, Nen (lost to injury).

Their GM is either a genius or the luckiest man in baseball. Felippe Alou might be able to take a AA team to the playoffs, oh wait...he did manage the Expos.

earlnash, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Arizona got the shaft by trading away their infield for Richie Sexson who had a season ending injury fairly early in the season.

Montreal is in a holding pattern about their future, Selig kinda fucked them anyway.

Seattle seems to be giving up. They probably need to shake things up there from the top down.

The Giants are a team of DESTINY, a TRUE UNDERDOG, a TEAM THAT COULD...

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

...BLOW CHUNKS. GM = idiot savant. Manager = wins despite himself (cf. playing Neifi & Deivi should not work). And Felipe had a LOT more to work w/ in Montreal (see Marquis Grissom, Larry Walker, Rondell White, Moises Alou, Ken Hill, John Wetteland, Mel Rojas, PEDRO) than he does in San Fran. For instance. Of course / unfortunately, he didn't get too far w/ that talent.

Arizona got the shaft by having 3 of their key players (Unit, Gonzo, Finley) tip the age scales on the bad end of 30. Lots of infield depth, though (w/ Kata & Hairston & Tracy & Cintron). The rotation sans Unit is a scary thing. Assuming Sexson comes back healthy next year, their lineup might do OK (though getting the production they're currently getting from the Gonzo Finley duo out of other folks might be sketchy) (esp. w/ Colangelo's money woes). B-Webb needs to right his ship, and Fossum needs to step it up. Duh.

If they gots any brains, Zona should trade one of their OFs (maybe both) to a contendah for some organizational depth. Don't trade RJ. If they can get something for Alomar besides a lot of lip, they definitely should, and I'd release his whiny ass regardless. Sign some mid-level free agents to bolster the pitching staff in the offseason, send out NRI feelers all over the place, scour the waiver wire for worthy castoffs. Essentially, I'd GM more like a Moneyballer than a Garagiola, which is not gonna happen down there anytime soon (obviously).

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I tend to think that the D-Backs won't ship out The Big Unit. Johnson is pitching well, is a marquee player and I don't think he would want the headache of being a NYY. After all this is a player that owned a Humvee painted in D-Back colors with a personalized license plate that says "BIG UNIT".

As consistent a player as Finley has been for the D-Backs, he probably has the most trade value. I'd try to get something for him and Danny Bautista, if anyone was buying. Gonzalez is damaged goods and I doubt any contenders would want him, besides that HE is the guy that got the big hit in their World Series win, so maybe they keep him around for the final days of his career, which should be within the next year or so.

Alou might have won a championship in Mtl if it wasn't for the strike in 94. They were the hottest team when the strike happened and had a killer lineup, the best starter (Martinez) and closer (Wetteland) in the NL.

earlnash, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the unit also has a no-trade clause that he would have to waive to get traded, but it's not like the boss wouldn't at least TRY to bowl him over with a dumptruck full of cash.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

despite himself (cf. playing Neifi & Deivi should not work).

deivi cruz is batting .333, .377 OBP, .477 SLG

there is only one guy on the giants with higher BA and OBP!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Deivi's career line (1054 games) (counting this year's 111 AB outburst): .269 / .293 / .387

However:
Career high walks in a season - 22 (in 514 ABs)
This year - 8 (in 111 ABs)

Meaning: ????

BALCO

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

brewers: don't change a thing, except maybe see if they can go back to the AL so they can slide in prince fielder as a DH. bring up ricky weeks too and stuff him in the outfield, because bill hall is playing well at 3rd and that keeps us from having to play ginter. magically stop our leadoff man from pulling 0 for 5ers, can't steal many bases with a .250 BA. magically help our big slugger geoff to actually hit some longballs, christ, other pitchers are more afraid of brooks kieschnik and ben grieves than of jenkins. other than that, don't mess with it. except maybe trade all the prospects for carlos guillen.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the brewers need rickey henderson and andres galarraga.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

And Minnie Minoso.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

ned yost could still hit
at least .250 with chiseled chin
and bad attitude

Rebuilding:

*Do good drafts.

*Acquire undervalued players, jettison expensive vets who are about to decline.

Sound like a book we've read?

Re the Giants, Gary Huckabay on BP chat today: "They always seem to get lightning in a bottle from somewhere. But tempting the fates with the likes Neifi, Deivi, and Meiki is asking an awful lot from a bottle."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Rangers dumb-lucked into their current success. Hart was trying to get rid of Young, he's responsible for , most of the young players are from Melvin's tenure, Hart was behind signing Juan Gonzalez, Chan Ho, John Rocker, A-Rod, etc.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, all A-Rod contract bashers plz repeat this party line: THE A-ROD SIGNING WAS NOT A BAD SIGNING. Now, Rusty Greer, that was dopey (but was that Hart?), and Brian Jordan's contract was ultradopey (as were most of the guaranteed monies doled out to veteran-type players this off-season - Young, Delucci, Jeff Nelson, Fullmer, etc.), and everyone else listed in Milo's post (outside of Rocker, which was nothing more than a minor-league singing, right?) came to camp with scarlet Ds on their foreheads. As for the dumb luck of the Rangers:

Guys performing at or near their expected level: Blalock, Soriano, Mench, Fullmer (after a wee hot streak), Texeira, Rogers.

Guys reaching over their heads or skipping grades: Nix, Michael Young, Barajas & Laird, Eric Young, Drese, most of the Rangers bullpen (outside of Cordero?)

You know, I hear some chat about the Rangers' lackluster offense, yet with their starting pitching seeming quite Rangeresque (outside of Drese & The Gambler), they're in first place w/ the 2nd best record in the AL. Doi?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Neifi, Deivi, and Meiki

Meiki Phiffer?

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

How was it not a bad signing? It won them no games and nearly crippled the franchise financially (because of the owner). Maybe it wasn't a bad signing in theory, or wouldn't be bad for an owner like Steinbrenner (take that to mean an owner who wants/cares about winning, or an owner with more money than God, either way). But it produced nothing for the Rangers, thus I'd say it's a bad signing.

I don't know if you can say Michael Young is skipping a grade - it's his third full season, he's in his prime, and a big chunk of his OPS increase is cutting down the K/BB ratio from 3:1 to 2:1. Maybe a little above last year will be his level/grade.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree with milo, michael young is delivering on the promises of his first 2 seasons (albeit he's calmed down a little in june).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

you ALWAYS agree w/ milo!

j.q. higgins, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

have i told you all my story about the REAL milo auckerman (lead singer of the descendents)?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean our Milo isn't him?

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

:-\

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

j.q. higgins, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

when i undergradded at UCSD, milo was PhD-candidate-ing in molecular bio. my friend BB and i went to his office hours and goofed off with him after physics labs, he was really funny. he left the next year for UW-Madison (???), BB and i wish we dropped in on him more (although he probably didn't).

yes, i still listen to and love the descendents.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)
