So slip into that Nehru jacket and PudditontheBOOOOARD...

briania (briania), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I love email.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, Stence, missed your cue. Where my would-be Wimpy's at?

briania (briania), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry.

YYYYYEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I still think my favorite Hawkism is "I love email," though.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Sports Center put him on a loop the other night, with Timo Perez rounding the bases: "COME-on Timo! COME-on Timo! COME-on Timo!"

briania (briania), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Another story, just because I'm in a love-bead-wearin', one-good-season-havin', Jay-Mariotti-feudin', slang-slingin', airwave-pollutin' mood this morning:

Before adopting "HE-GONE" as his strikeout call, Hawk used to invite opposing batters to "Grab some bench" or such-like. Circa 1990, with the Sox facing K.C. and soon-to-retire George Brett, Hawk's rambling on to Paciorek in the vein of "George Brett, what a class act, what a credit to the game of baseball," and so on. Then, virtually in mid-sentence, he's all "STRIKE THREE! GRAB SOME BENCH, BRETT!!"

briania (briania), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Who is your pick to click?

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Gotta be Maggs. C'mown, Maggs. C'mown, Maggs.

briania (briania), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

What is UP with Hawk's cat-eye sunglasses? Couldn't find an image online, but maybe you've seen them. Plus he's wearing them when it's not even sunny out. Does he have an eye disease or something?

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Hawk probably considers himself one of the few men groovy enough to sport such eyewear. Plus, they're probably insurance gainst getting slugged.

briania (briania), Monday, 16 August 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

CAN O' CORN FOR ONE DOG

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 16 August 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

He looks like he borrowed his wife's glasses.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 16 August 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice one, Gear. 3-2, good guys.

briania (briania), Monday, 16 August 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Sports Center put him on a loop the other night, with Timo Perez rounding the bases: "COME-on Timo! COME-on Timo! COME-on Timo!"

I didn't see the SportsCenter, but they probably didn't loop it; he actually said it about 6 times in a row during the live broadcast...

"Sacks packed with Sox."

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"Chopper two-hopper to Crede."

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone know if there's a clip on the internet somewhere of him and DJ's bitchfest from a couple years ago? That was awesomely uncomfortable to listen to.
DJ: "Can o corn? what the hell does that mean?"

oops (Oops), Monday, 16 August 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

it seems to have "improved" this year, but the last couple i just remember there being lots and lots of silence. watching sox games could be kind of eerie as a result but most of the time you just felt like the broadcasters didn't have a clue.

i generally don't pay much attention to broadcasters, but hawk (when he's talking) is hard not to notice. he's "folksy" and annoying, and not in a cute ron santo this-guy-is-just-a-regular-fan way either. the analyst is totally worthless.

maybe someone w/ direct tv or a mlb.com package deal can confirm, but this has gotta be one of the worst broadcast teams in the country.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 16 August 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

And with that homerun, the Alex Snelias family will donate $100 dollars to White Sox Charities. That makes $17,300 donated this year by Alex and Ursula Snelias.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Monday, 16 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, does Hawk still disappear for a couple of innings each game? What the hell is he doing in that time?

Do I want to know?

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 16 August 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Hawk's hittin' the rock. The uncomfortable silences may become more protacted in days to come as the Sox have gone into their September slide somewhat prematurely.

Gasssss!

briania (briania), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

John, FWIW, my announcer sh!tlist:

Rex Hudler / whomever (FSN Angels)
Hawk / whosit (FSN ChiSox)
Thom Brenneman / Steve Lyons (FSN D-Backs)
Michael Kay / just about anyone (YES Yanqs)
whoever does Cincy games for FSN

I hate fun.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM. The radio team (is it still Ed Farmer and somebody?) is even worse. I listened to an inning or two last summer and was surprised that the announcers just seemed so bored and unable to muster any enthusiasm. I'm not one of those Cubs fans who hates the Sox, but Pat Hughes and Ron Santo are clearly MILES better than that unfortunate duo. (Then again, I do LOVE Hughes and Santo; I turn the sound on the TV off and listen on the radio.)

“Worst press box, worst booths for television. It’s a joke. It really is,” Harrelson told reporters of the Cubs' legendary Wrigley Field. “I will never step foot in that ballpark again. Ever.”

“We’ve got three games over at their place (next season), and I told (White Sox chairman) Jerry (Reinsdorf)..., ‘I’m not going back to Wrigley Field,'" Harrelson said while the White Sox played a road series at Boston's Fenway Park. He said, ‘Well, you’ve got three games there next year.’ I said, ‘Well, we’re going to get rid of those.’”

Harrelson served as a Chicago White Sox announcer from 1982 to 1985 and briefly left broadcasting during the 1986 season to become the White Sox's general manager. During his one season as GM, Harrelson fired field manager Tony La Russa (who was soon hired by the Oakland Athletics) and assistant general manager Dave Dombrowski (who became baseball's youngest general manager with the Montreal Expos two years later). Harrelson also traded rookie Bobby Bonilla, later a six-time All-Star, to the Pittsburgh Pirates for pitcher José DeLeón.
