I think he will. Other players have come close in recent seasons (can't remember the names) but their managers sat them at the end of the season so that they wouldn't break the record.

But Dunn is having a much better offensive season than any of the (anonymously) aforementioned players, so I don't think he'll sit.

Dunn's got the three true outcomes thing down cold:

43 HR (4th in NL)
107 BB (6th in NL)
185 K (1st in NL)

Also, should he reach 100 RBI this season without a single sac fly, he'll be the first to do since Joe Morgan.

You all may have seen this already, but in last week's Useless info column here, it details how Dunn is on pace to be the only player not named McGwire to join the 300 Times Not Hitting the Baseball club.

I remember Jose Hernandez of the Brewers being benched when he was close to the record. Like Bobby Bonds and Dunn, he was having a fine season. The handwringing over high K totals makes me sick if the guy is otherwise valuable. (Not to say Barry B's low K total isn't wondrous.)

He just set the record, at the hands of Mark Prior (who's struck out 8 in four innings now).

He's since added on to his record (which, IMO, Jose Hernandez deserves). Prior is insane today, though -- 13 Ks already through 7.

Sorry, 15 Ks (!).

The thing I can't believe is the no sac-flies. Is that true? Is that possible??

Lots of stuff on Adam Dunn's bizarro-world season:

one month passes...

There's a career leaderboard (active players) where Adam Dunn currently sits at #1--what category?

clemenza, Monday, 30 July 2012 23:51 (eleven years ago) link

Has anyone ever led their league in HR, BB, and K's?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 08:05 (eleven years ago) link

(not the answer to clemenza's question)

I found the answer, but it's only since 1954 due to statistical black holes.

Jonah Keri @ Grantland:

"The Three True Outcomes Triple Crown is a much rarer feat than even the traditional Triple Crown, with only eight players turning the TTO feat, vs. 16 AVG/HR/RBI ones."

Schmidt, Mike, Phillies 1983
Wilson, Hack, Cubs 1930

Dunn is third among active players in strikeouts, fourth in home run percentage, but first in most games played without appearing in the post-season (1,671 and counting):

If he were to fall off the list this year, Vernon Wells would take over the active lead; but he might fall off too, in which case Jack Wilson would move to #1. Who is Jack Wilson?

Here in Toronto, by the way, we've come to think of not making the playoffs as the Fourth True Outcome.

he's first in something else:
