holy fuck, in the interview on ESPN News he sounds like he's retiring. and he's blaming his knee on the media. what a dick.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously has nobody else seen this yet? BIG NEWS!

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah that's the Giants season basically. At least we have a nice ballpark.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Have anything to do with the NY Times bimbo eruption today? (see steroid thread)

He'll be back, if the knee is OK.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha ohmigod his quotes are really funny. You'd swear the press came into his house at night and hit him in the knees with a tire iron.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

local news reports maybe a month, if that. he's in Arizona right now working out with the team.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I read something off of the google sports page from some paper who said it might be possible he would be out till June. From the descriptions about his knee before this new surgery, it sounded pretty bad as part is pretty much bone on bone (ouch).

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I would also not be one bit suprised if Bonds just pulls a Barry Sanders and walks away. Bonds has tons of money and at some point he might just decide putting up with all of this crap isn't worth his time anymore.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe he and rickey williams can buy a boat together!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

rickey could be his yoga instructor.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure what to make of this yet. The implication that Bonds was chased out of potency by the media in some strange psychosomatic manner just reeks of ego, and it's even worse that he's pushing it on his family.

"I'm tired of my kids crying," and then concluding the interview with "come on, let's go home" to his son? Come on. How many fans will buy Barry as a victim?

nick parish (scrimshaw1837), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Meanwhile somewhere else in the baseball universe, Rickey Henderson is looking up the Giants GM office phone number.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

in the interview on ESPN News he sounds like he's retiring. and he's blaming his knee on the media.

If you squint really really hard, then I suppose you could interpret it that way.

"The Media" (that amorphous, ill-defined bunch) wants to talk about the knee, sort of, but they really still want to talk about steroids. Bonds doesn't want to talk about anything to anybody. Bonds can be a prick. Interview, voila.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

There goes the fantasy team.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

``You wanted me to jump off a bridge, I finally did,'' Bonds said. ``You finally brought me and my family down. ... So now go pick a different person.''

``My son and I are just going to enjoy our lives. You guys wanted to hurt me bad enough, you finally got me,'' Bonds said. ``I'm mentally drained. I'm tired of my kids crying.''

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

In San Francisco? All of them?

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

except Alex in SF.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

``You finally brought me and my family down. ...

He could have said that at any time in the last two years. Obviously he's got a lot more turmoil in his life because of the media circus surrounding him (I'm not sympathizing with him, I'm just stating facts), and he happened to pick *this* time to say that because ...

So now go pick a different person.''

... he's not going to be around to pick on for the next few months.

"Media, I hate y'all, now fuck off and talk to somebody else because I won't be playing for a while".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll believe whatever Barry wants me to believe.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello, what cave are you guys living in? Barry lives for this media drama, it's his coping mechanism. See also: his entire career.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"except Alex in SF."

Believe me I'm not alone.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"So now go pick a different person." Barry as Nixon! (Dick, not Otis)

It's just his way of lashing out at Jim Bunning and hstencil.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Barry's mother have a good cloth coat? He'll be damned if he gives back that leather chair! His kids love that leather chair.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I lurk here and I've had it up to here with all this Sanford and Son crapola on ILBB. I'm off to enjoy my life.

B Bonds (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

P Gammons sez the Giants can win without him. Back in Realityville, Joe Sheehan of BP writes "Bonds (is) the only player on their roster who is better than even money to post an OBP above league average. Without him, the Giants are one of the five worst teams in baseball, unable to sustain an offense, and with a horrific defense."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike Matheney needs to GIT R DONE!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Peter Gammons is smoking crack. I'm not even sure if they can make the playoffs with him. They certainly aren't a shoe in.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Barry, please retire. I want to go back to rooting for the only NL team I've liked since childhood.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Giants owner Peter Magowan believes his team has four players – Feliz, Deivi Cruz, Tucker and Yorvit Torrealba – "Who could start for many other teams. For us, depth is extremely important because we play so many games, which requires recovery, and all our travel."

"The other 21, on the other hand..."

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

You missed the point, those guys he named are all bench players. And he's absolutely right.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

You could say that about four bench players on almost any good team though. It's not terribly impressive.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, esp. if those other teams are the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Colorado Rockies, Pittsburgh Pirates, etc., etc.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I figured that was the point, but the way he phrased it (and the context) says nothing of them riding the bench, that's why I found it funny. (And Gammons' column actually lists Feliz and Tucker as quasi-starters in the OF now.)

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I do love baseball-speak, though: "Before spring training, I worried about getting Pedro Feliz enough at-bats. Now he can play left field." Yeah, that's a real silver-lining! "If Bonds wasn't out indefinitely I couldn't find room for Pedro Feliz AND Michael Tucker, what a horror."

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the part about "we play so many games". I didn't realize the Giants scheduled more than the required 162!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Not to pile on, but Bonds's injury could significantly impact the Giants bid to field MLB's oldest team evar.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Barry's son is wearing a Barry Sanders Detroit Lions jersey in that ESPN interview!!! Barry's son is cool!!

but more importantly ... WHAT IS THE SUBTEXT???

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Bonds’ latest media appearance must be understood in a different way as well. He has long been acutely aware of the media’s uses and dangers, and the ways in which to make them snap to his needs. Thus, on Tuesday, Bonds showed what he wanted them to show, to paint him as a sympathetic figure being crushed by government and media alike. His son, Nikolai, was there, and Bonds referred often to finding solace with his family away from an outside world that has to a significant level rejected him. He is, in fact, caught on ESPN tape requesting to the cameraman to make sure his son is shown during the interview.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

He wasn't "caught" on tape when he made the request that they show his son; he knew the cameras were rolling! His cards were on the table the whole time. He specifically says, after the interview has plainly started, something like, "I want you to show my son so people can see the effect this is having on my family."

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Stenc OTM; those four bench players could only start for a graveyard franchise. The best way to get mainstream sports media to overpraise your team is to stockpile OLD PLAYERS THEY'VE HEARD OF.

>Barry, please retire. I want to go back to rooting for the only NL team I've liked since childhood.<

I really don't understand this depth of hatred for him in anybody but a reporter. To have that kind of passion for or against BB, dick or not, is just taking the bait in the Bonds-media war.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

forget barry...what about the broken arm of the allegedly resurgent joe borowski?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the media's fault too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I figured Borowski pulled a Farnsworth/Brown and broke his arm in a fit of anger. Still, the Cubs might be better off with Borowski on the DL if he is anything like last season.
