It's high time we had a MINNESOTA TWINS THREAD

Potentially new stadium (albeit unpopularly recieved by the public) (and slated to be built next to a garbage incinerator; fucking brilliant), a pitching staff that has given up only 41 walks in a roughly combined 250 innings of work, Morneau and Mauer healthy and beating the crap out of you (1.118 and .933 OPS respectively); Jacque Jones suddenly hitting like Kirby Puckett mkII (.357 average; .571 slugging) only he actually draws walks too (.462 OBP); Joe Nathan still without an earned run to his name in 12 appearances; Santana OWNING J00 -- White Sox be damned; we got the Wild Card locked at least.

Hell yes.

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 8 May 2005 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Morneau is kicking ass. A homer shy of the cycle today.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 8 May 2005 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

That's ok about the cycle, Morneau had hit dingers in his previous three games. The shot to the head he took must have zoned everything in.

three weeks pass...
Torii Hunter went 5-5, 6RBI (incl. a grand salami) and raised his avg by 20 points in one night.

Let's predict the day when the Twins overtake the White Sox. I say July 10. I would have said soon, but they don't play Chicago again until mid-August.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 2 June 2005 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Despite the bad news that the twins lost 1B Justin Morneau, 2B Nick Punto and C Joe Mauer in their 4-3 13 inning victory over Cleveland, check out this line:

Minnesota IP H R ER BB K HR Season ERA
J. Santana 8 4 3 3 1 14 2 3.67
J. Rincon 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 2.45
J. Nathan 1 1 0 0 1 1 0 2.7
J. Crain 2 1 0 0 1 1 0 0.83
J. Romero 1 0 0 0 0 2 0 1.66
(W 1-2)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

What I'm trying to illustrate above is that the Twins have a lot of pitchers who's names begin with the letter "J". That, folx, is how you build a championship team.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

What the heck is it with Morneau and Mauer, they can't stay healthy. Did they not drink milk when they were growing up?

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Jim Baker has a piece in Prospectus on the all-time record the Twins are threatening to set -- best K/BB ratio by a staff:

3.829 - 2005 Minnesota Twins (314K:82 BB)
3.095 -- 2002 Arizona Diamondbacks (1303:421)
3.045 -- 1966 Los Angeles Dodgers (1084:356)
2.984 - 2003 New York Yankees (1119:375)
2.816 - 2002 New York Yankees (1135:403)
2.813 - 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks (1297:461)
2.795 - 1994 Montreal Expos (805:288)
2.761 - 1996 Atlanta Braves (1245:451)
2.750 - 1967 Minnesota Twins (1089:396)
2.741 - 1990 New York Mets (1217:444)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 3 June 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Brad Radke has always had pretty good control, but this year he has only walked 3 in 12 starts and 82 innings. That is really, really good. I suppose it balences out those 13 dingers he has given up.

I can't believe I'm rooting for the Twins to win the Central, but something non-Guillen about the ChiSox gives me the mehs, so GO TWINKIES! (Ideally, I'd be WHAT THE F*CK INDIANS GET IT TOGETHER!, but I dunno if that's happening, despite V-Mart's gradual redemption.)

How are these guys in second place, one back of the Tigers? Their starting pitching is awful, Mauer and Willingham aren't hitting, and their team leader in homers somehow has 7 HR and just 9 RBI. Is Chris Colabello the best scrap heap pickup ever?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 26 April 2014 21:57 (twelve years ago)

apparently their pitching staff is generating fewer swings-and-misses than any other team in the pitch/fx era

Pelf in solid twinbill innings-eater form -- 2 IP, 3 ER, 47 pitches

if they wake up and cut him that'll really kill my HM team

alex meyer's ready, but he may not pitch to enough contact to suit the twins

mookieproof, Thursday, 1 May 2014 21:00 (twelve years ago)

Mike Pelfrey (0-3), who hasn't won at Target Field since April 16, 2013, gave up five runs and seven hits and walked three in four innings for the Twins.

If Pelfrey doesn't pitch better soon, he could wind up in the bullpen.

"We've got to do something about it, we have to fix it," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We're trying to get him on the right path."

Twins placed center fielder Aaron Hicks on the seven-day disabled list Friday with concussion-like symptoms, and right-hander Mike Pelfrey was headed for the 15-day DL after reporting soreness in his left groin.

@MikeBerardino
Oswaldo Arcia's ankle is good to go. Back in right for first time since Thursday.

@MikeBerardino
Gardy on Arcia's pregame work: "Fine. He missed all the normal balls that he would miss during a game."

mookieproof, Monday, 9 June 2014 22:02 (eleven years ago)

Twins baseball is just not on the radar in the midwest. What are the big beefs among the Twins fanbase? Do they still like Gardenhire or would love to see him replaced? Twins are pretty good illustration on what happens when you sign players for big bucks and not having a plan B. I see some parallels to the Reds with Votto and Bruce. If those two guys get hurt, the Reds are screwed. With how Morneau fell apart and Mauer got hurt a couple times, they didn't have anyone that could replace those two. Their pitching totally imploded too.

I got to wonder if more than a few clubs come up for sale in the next year or two. I think with the shakiness of the tv/ stream contracts, the finances of baseball are a big mess that could pull the rug out from underneath many of the smaller market clubs. Sell them while they have this inflated valuation is my thought.
