Carl Mays and Ty Cobb had a mutual dislike for each other that dated back to the pitcher's rookie season with the Boston Red Sox. In 1915 Detroit and Boston were involved in a battle for the pennant. On two occasions, the last occurring on September 16, Mays hit Cobb with a pitch. On the 16th, Cobb was hit in the wrist and didn't like it one bit. The star outfielder flung his bat toward Mays and challenged the youngster to a fight, which never happened. The Fenway crowd took matters into their own hands, throwing bottles and hot dogs at Cobb as he took his position in center field. When Cobb caught the final out of the game, which Detroit won, the crowd surrounded the Tiger outfielder as he left the field. A famous picture of that event shows Cobb walking defiantly through the crowd, who are keeping a distance from the edgy ballplayer.
