Newsday listed the 9 different possible Tribe-Yanks-Sawx outcomes, and my head is spinning.

I assume a Monday game would be played at either 1 or 3 pm? esp if there's ANOTHER playoff on Tuesday?

hotcha!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

What kind of tiebreaker are they using to state that the White Sox have clinched the division, since they are 96-63 and the Indians are 93-66? If the Indians sweep wouldn't they be tied for the lead?

I can see why they would both be in the playoffs if this occurred, but what kind of rule decided that the Sox would be the division champs and the Indians the wild card team?

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

CHI 1 CLE 2 - BOS 2 NYY 1: BOS plays NYY for division, then loser plays CLE for WC

I'm pulling for this scenario, as it would be the most nutty.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

It's the CLE-CHI in-season head-to-head matchup result, yes? Olney tried to explain this on BBTN last night...poorly.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

Earl Nash OTM

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

I THIRD THE AWESOMENESS OF THE NUTTY RESULT!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

I think it's head-to-head record. If both teams qualify for the playoffs, then they don't play a one-game playoff just to decide who is division champ. The team with the better head-to-head record is declared division champ and the other is the wild card. This happened with the Astros and Cardinals in 2000.

If teams finished tied for a division lead but are not both guaranteed playoff berths, then there would be a one-game playoff.

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

I can see why they would both be in the playoffs if this occurred, but what kind of rule decided that the Sox would be the division champs and the Indians the wild card team?

Head-to-head record; also, the second-place team in the AL East can finish with no more than 95 wins, so if Cleveland sweeps, Cleveland is AUTOMATICALLY the wild card:

Boston 3-0:
BOS 96-66
NYY 94-68

Boston 2-1:
BOS 95-67
NYY 95-67

New York 2-1:
NYY 96-66
BOS 94-68

New York 3-0:
NYY 97-65
BOS 93-69

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/baseball/mlb/09/30/al.race.ap/

If the Yankees, Red Sox and Indians finish with identical records:

For the first time in baseball history, there would be a double playoff. New York and Boston would play Monday at Yankee Stadium to decide the AL East winner. The loser would play the Indians on Tuesday for the wild card -- it would either be New York at Cleveland or the Indians at Boston.

If the Yankees and Red Sox finish tied, with a worse record than the Indians:

Boston and New York hold a one-game playoff at Yankee Stadium on Monday to decide the AL East winner, Cleveland win the wild card.

If the Yankees win the AL East and Boston and Cleveland finish tied:

The Indians play at Fenway Park on Monday in a one-game playoff for the wild card.

If the Red Sox win the AL East and the Yankees and Cleveland finish tied:

The Yankees play at Jacobs Field on Monday in a one-game playoff for the wild card.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Friday, 30 September 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

And I meant 2001 in my post above.

Astros stunk in 2000.

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 30 September 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

who here would take off of work on monday and tuesday should the NUTTY SCENARIO happen?

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 30 September 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

(cuz i'm already practicing up on my cough)

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 30 September 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

In all sincerity, I think I'm coming down with a cold. This could be awfully convenient!

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Friday, 30 September 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Head-to-head record; also, the second-place team in the AL East can finish with no more than 95 wins, so if Cleveland sweeps, Cleveland is AUTOMATICALLY the wild card:

I don't understand why they wouldn't have a playoff for the division title, with the loser taking the wildcard. It should matter for seeding purposes, no?

Or do one-game playoffs only take place when there is the possibility of an elimination?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 1 October 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

xpost -- in all seriousness, I started coming down with something yesterday. I didn't even think about the baseball implications of this! Thanks guys!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 1 October 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

And then there were twelve. For a little while.

CHI 3 CLE 0 - BOS 3 NYY 0: BOS wins division, NYY wins WC (no playoff), CLE out
CHI 3 CLE 0 - BOS 2 NYY 1: NYY wins division, BOS wins WC (no playoff), CLE out
CHI 3 CLE 0 - BOS 1 NYY 2: NYY wins division, BOS wins WC (no playoff), CLE out
CHI 2 CLE 1 - BOS 3 NYY 0: BOS wins division, NYY plays CLE in playoff game for WC
CHI 2 CLE 1 - BOS 2 NYY 1: NYY wins division, BOS wins WC, CLE out
CHI 2 CLE 1 - BOS 1 NYY 2: NYY wins division, BOS plays CLE in playoff game for WC
CHI 1 CLE 2 - BOS 3 NYY 0: BOS wins division, CLE wins WC, NYY out
CHI 1 CLE 2 - BOS 2 NYY 1: BOS plays NYY for division, then loser plays CLE for WC
CHI 1 CLE 2 - BOS 1 NYY 2: NYY wins division, CLE wins WC, BOS out
CHI 0 CLE 3 - BOS 3 NYY 0: BOS wins division, CLE wins WC, NYY out
CHI 0 CLE 3 - BOS 2 NYY 1: CLE wins WC, BOS plays NYY in playoff game for division
CHI 0 CLE 3 - BOS 1 NYY 2: NYY wins division, CLE wins WC, BOS out

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 1 October 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

You mean six:

CHI 2 CLE 1 - BOS 3 NYY 0: BOS wins division, NYY plays CLE in playoff game for WC
CHI 2 CLE 1 - BOS 2 NYY 1: NYY wins division, BOS wins WC, CLE out
CHI 2 CLE 1 - BOS 1 NYY 2: NYY wins division, BOS plays CLE in playoff game for WC
CHI 1 CLE 2 - BOS 3 NYY 0: BOS wins division, CLE wins WC, NYY out
CHI 1 CLE 2 - BOS 2 NYY 1: BOS plays NYY for division, then loser plays CLE for WC
CHI 1 CLE 2 - BOS 1 NYY 2: NYY wins division, CLE wins WC, BOS out

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 1 October 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

Why would you eliminate the three Chicago sweeps?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 1 October 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

Because I'm stupid and/or optimistic?

Let's try 9:

CHI 3 CLE 0 - BOS 3 NYY 0: BOS wins division, NYY wins WC (no playoff), CLE out
CHI 3 CLE 0 - BOS 2 NYY 1: NYY wins division, BOS wins WC (no playoff), CLE out
CHI 3 CLE 0 - BOS 1 NYY 2: NYY wins division, BOS wins WC (no playoff), CLE out
CHI 2 CLE 1 - BOS 3 NYY 0: BOS wins division, NYY plays CLE in playoff game for WC
CHI 2 CLE 1 - BOS 2 NYY 1: NYY wins division, BOS wins WC, CLE out
CHI 2 CLE 1 - BOS 1 NYY 2: NYY wins division, BOS plays CLE in playoff game for WC
CHI 1 CLE 2 - BOS 3 NYY 0: BOS wins division, CLE wins WC, NYY out
CHI 1 CLE 2 - BOS 2 NYY 1: BOS plays NYY for division, then loser plays CLE for WC
CHI 1 CLE 2 - BOS 1 NYY 2: NYY wins division, CLE wins WC, BOS out

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 1 October 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

I just got back from vacation, and I may need to preserve my sick days for court or moving as I just got a letter from the Scumbag Landlord trying to squeeze me out the door by Halloween!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 1 October 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Damn Morbs, is he converting on you? How long have you been there?

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 1 October 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

I think it's very strange that the baseball lizards appear to be perfectly happy for two teams to tie for the AL East lead. I should think someone needs to be The Winnar, regardless of how the postseason games shake out.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 1 October 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

Remaining scenarios:

CHI 3 CLE 0 - BOS 2 NYY 1: NYY wins division, BOS wins WC (no playoff), CLE out
CHI 3 CLE 0 - BOS 1 NYY 2: NYY wins division, BOS wins WC (no playoff), CLE out
CHI 2 CLE 1 - BOS 2 NYY 1: NYY wins division, BOS wins WC, CLE out
CHI 2 CLE 1 - BOS 1 NYY 2: NYY wins division, BOS plays CLE in playoff game for WC

Cleveland's only remaining chance is to win tomorrow and hope that the Yankees win.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 1 October 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

What about the NL?

Phils up 5-3 in the 8th, Astros just tied the Cubs 4-4 in the 6th.

mattbot (mattbot), Sunday, 2 October 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Nevermind, I think Neifi just sealed the Phils phate.
