I think the top 3 in the AL east will be pretty close overall. Their flaws are pretty equal and they're going to be beating up on each other, of course... It's just looks skewed -- Baltimore and Tampa will continue to be THAT BAD.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 23 January 2006 21:14 (twenty years ago)

All of you people picking the Yanquis are mental.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 23 January 2006 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Well their pitching has massive upside from last year. RJ + Mussina will decline, but Wright/Pavano are both 100%, then Small/Wang/Chacon competing for 5th spot. They added Fansworth/Dotel to replace Gordon. I'm impressed.

This line-up is pretty fucking scary from an opposing pitcher's POV.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 23 January 2006 21:33 (twenty years ago)

That's just it -- their two best pitchers will decline, their next best pitchers are 100% but have about three good seasons between them in their entire careers, and predicting what the Small/Wang/Chacon axis will do this year is virtually guesswork. It's almost certain that they will decline from last year's unexpectedly good performances.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 23 January 2006 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Thing is, who can you pick in the AL East? None of these teams look overly great. You almost have to take the Yankees by default, if only because they've maybe improved slightly, whereas the Sox have backslid some.

I fear this will be one ugly year for Boston.

You can predict the cumulative outcomes of 16x162 baseball games but predicting 1 1/2 months of trading/free agency is beyond your abilities? Seems kinda weird.

At the time I wrote that Morbs, MIN was in the bottom 3 in OPS in MLB. The finished at 13th out of 30 which is a huge improvement, but still they are a farrrrrrrrr cry from murderer's row.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 2 October 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

That is true, but they turned out to have 2 guys who could hit the ball.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 October 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

Congratulations to all who didn't pick the Indians.

You seem to be having fun at the Indians' expense lately, so let me point out:

1) They were a legitimately great team last year who would have won the wild card if not for a final week collapse.

2) This isn't the NFL, where a team goes 6-10 and they're everybody's sleeper pick to win the Superbowl the next year based on a couple of breakout stars and a weak schedule.

3) This year, they were second in runs scored in the AL (after the Yanks) and scored 88 runs more than they allowed. Only Minnesota, Detroit, and New York did better in that regard. So they were in fact a fairly good team this year.

4) If not for a shite bullpen and a division that turned out to be much more competitive than anyone anticipated, they probably would have been in the playoff hunt all season.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 2 October 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

Granted; I do think they'll be good next year (the Central could be amazing, if Detroit's 2nd-half mediocrity isn't an omen for '07).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 October 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, but their bullpen was really really shite.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 2 October 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

Why did I pick Tampa Bay as third in the East? I got four division winners (five if you count the Dodgers) but I didn't pick WC teams.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 2 October 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

Had I typed it out then, I probably would've had four right.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Monday, 2 October 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

Milwaukee would have won the NL Central except for its horrible bullpen, and untimely injuries to two of its starting pitchers and three of its starting infielders, and Carlos Lee not being happy with $12 million a year, and curious decisions by Yost and Melvin.

In fact, I'm actually going to count them as a playoff team, they deserved it on intangibles alone. So I'm five for eight! And my picking the Twins to finish ahead of the Indians should count as another one, so now I'm up to .750!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 2 October 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

...a division that turned out to be much more competitive than anyone anticipated...

hrm, i thought the al central would be competitive.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 2 October 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

Unless you also thought that the Tigers would lead the division for most of the year and go on to win 95 games, then it was more competitive than anticipated.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 2 October 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

i didn't think that would happen, but i did think the tigers would be pretty good. i had them 3rd behind cleveland and the sox.
