I talked to Steven Goldman for a few minutes at the New York SABR meeting on Saturday; he'd just finished the book's text at 5 a.m. (In his 10 minutes at the mike, he previewed a joke from the Tampa Bay section: Chuck LaMar is a Melvillean character because he, like Bartleby the Scrivener, prefers not to.) The annual will be out on schedule with Baseball Between the Numbers to follow in March.

mine's ordered

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 30 January 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)

I ordered one last week. I downloaded the 2006 PECOTA projections (their fantasy section is still mostly useless - they seem to think people bring computers to live drafts and input information in real-time), but I still don't have anything capable of opening an Excel file.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Erick, they do! My fantasy football draft from a couple years ago involved multiple laptops and an online draftboard updated in real-time!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

"Erick"

Sorry - I meant "CHICKEN FRIES"

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

unfortunately my draft will be before the book comes out. OH NOES!!! downloaded the spreadsheet tho.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

wow pecota is shockingly high on wily mo and blalock

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 30 January 2006 21:09 (twenty years ago)

and howie fucking kendrick 32nd overall in baseball in vorp!?!?!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 30 January 2006 21:11 (twenty years ago)

*whimpers*

YSI plz?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 30 January 2006 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Oh, come on - YSI for a SPREADSHEET?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 30 January 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

haha, all righty then: hit me up Yanc3!

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 30 January 2006 21:23 (twenty years ago)

I call bullshit on Gagne's 3% Collapse/12% Attrition WTF

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 30 January 2006 21:47 (twenty years ago)

No big surprises yet, looking through the spreadsheet on another computer. They seem optimistic on Blalock, and I think Barry going for 150 is unlikely, but who knows.

If I lived anywhere else in the country, I bet I could get Ian Kinsler cheap on auction day.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:15 (twenty years ago)

oh, and my favorite part is Kevin Millwood for $12mln per - 11 and 10 with a 4.50ish ERA. WOOO THERE'S YOUR ACE BOYS. You could have re-signed Kenny "The Maniac" Rogers for almost nothing and got better production.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:16 (twenty years ago)

Bad news for Billy Beane w/r/t Jason Kendall (acquired via trade):

2006 PECOTA = 16% Improve/43% Collapse on 2005 which saw a major decline in performance.

2006 Salary = $11M
2007 Salary = $13M ($5M of which to be paid by Pirates god I love BB)

But how's this: NO TRADE CLAUSE

$19M over the next 2 years... yikes.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:46 (twenty years ago)

I was looking at those Kendall #s earlier. They seem really pessimistic (the OBP seems almost too low to believe.) Kendall's year last year was really weird. Three months of relatively normal Kendall (three of the latter four months in fact so it doesn't seem like a wear-based decline) .300/.380/.380 ball and 3 months of just plain horror @ .240/.300/.260 ball. The last three months seem like aberrations looking at his career line and given the league and ballpark switch it doesn't seem impossible to believe that esp. those first two months were at least partially adjustment months and this year we can expect far more positive months than negative.

I was at our Barnes & Noble last night at 10 hounding for it but it wasn't there. Then again it wasn't there last year either till I started bitching about it. Then they ordered three copies that were gone in two hours. Then they ordered 15 copies WHICH JUST SAT THERE BECAUSE IT WAS APRIL ALREADY.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Mine came today, they've expanded the stats with a speed rating and top comparables.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Thursday, 2 March 2006 21:04 (twenty years ago)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 2 March 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 3 March 2006 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Still haven't found it!! I did buy Baseball Between the Numbers tho.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:47 (twenty years ago)

It's at Coliseum, Morbs! I picked it up last night.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Jams!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Julio Franco's position is listed as "AARP"; Cristian Guzman's as "Menace." Sean Casey's speed is unfavorably compared to a two-toed sloth with a pulled hamstring.

I'm glad they added the historically comparable players, tho some of em are headscratchers.

Queasy for Mets fans: Delgado's defense is "scary bad" and Lo Duca has a 40% Collapse rating.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:17 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
not related to the annual, but just wanted to put out a warning that BP moved their archived statistics into the premium/pay part of their site.

they are, however, temporarily still available via google's cache...
