This came up on an ILE thread but I found the results so interesting I figured I'd post the link here:

Common Census MLB Team Map

Some interesting things I noticed/learned:
-Mets and White Sox are the redheaded stepchildren of their geographic areas
-Cardinals love splits the state of IL!
-Cubs own Indiana despite presence of MI and OH teams
-Angels vs. Dodgers geography* relatively even while Giants dominate A's
-Nationals fandom has taken hold down the southern coast, hemming in the O's
-Reds/Indians split of OH even
-Astros/Rangers split of TX also even
-Nobody roots for the Devil Rays

*I realize geography population density

Cardinals love splits the state of IL!

I knew this from having relatives in Peoria: the baseball coverage is evenly split between Cubbies and Cards. Nobody cares at all about the White Sox south of Joliet.

-The Toronto Blue Jays exist in a sea of nothingness and their fan support is almost nil.

In the pre-cable days, wasn't the Midwest ruled by the Cards because of KMOX radio's strong signal?

Nobody cares at all about the White Sox south of Joliet.

or north of diversey.

There used to be a White Sox bar near the Damen Brown Line stop.

wgn was also a 50,000 watt radio station. you could hear it as far away as memphis.

chi had two teams to fight over, and the upper midwest was enthralled with wgn's cubbies, but the cards were the only "southern" team before atlanta, so they had a bigger share everywhere else.

The Crosley family which owned the Reds also owned WLW which was pushing out a bazillion watts back in the early days of radio until the government stepped in and trimmed them down to 50k.

I don't completely buy the map of Indiana, at least historically speaking. There are a lot more Reds fans in that state than that map indicates. I've never heard the Cubs on the radio growing up in Indiana, but there were stations in Indy, Muncie and Fort Wayne that carried the Reds.
