it's time to vote for the six major awards! NL and AL MVP, NL and AL Cy Young, and NL and AL ROY.

okay so here's the deal: vote for up to ten players for each ballot, and we'll do it MLB stylee, which i believe is 14 points for first place, 9 for second, 8 for third, on down to 1 point for tenth. right?

i'll unleash the results in ilm poll fashion on Monday, Oct. 9. Please email your ballots to [email protected].

I move we rename the awards, for ILBB purposes. You know, in the even that we someday become more legitamite than the actual MLB awards.

Like, the AL MVP could become "Most Prawr Clutchtastic AL Non-DH" and the Cy Young Award could become the "Thermo Thinwall Certificate of Awesomeness in the Field of Ball Lobbing".

NL MVP = The post-Barry Bonds Era Clean Face of Old Skool Baseball, We Heart Dirty Uniforms, No Greenies, No Whammies Award

...presented by Tom Verydouchey

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

Except for AL Cy Young this has to be one of the tightest award years ever. Really any of the top two or three here could be switched around (esp. the ROYs and MVPs) and you could make a good argument for them. [deleted Alex's ballot, just send it to gear, duder]

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

Actually I just checked the stats for this month and I've decided that Ramirez and Uggla should switch spots.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

email your ballots and keep it secret! yeah this is gonna be tight, yo

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

oh shit, no i didn't. sorry! btw you can vote for up to ten each, so go nuts if you want. if there's enough votes i'll reveal the top ten, otherwise it's the top 5.

gear (gear), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

haha, Alex just go back to Baseball Prospectus and sort by VORP like you did anyway.

;-P

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

you can't fool steve shasta (who's also going to incorporate win shares, RARP, and clutchijeterness).

Wait no I didn't.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

Also you can't sort by WARP1 which hurts.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

I don't understand the whole 14 points for 1st and 1 for 10th if there are only ten players.

BAH, HUMBUGGERY

The Bearnaise-Stain Bears (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 28 September 2006 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

small sample size!

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 28 September 2006 05:36 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't a ballot of ten for Cy and ROY a bit o' overkill? The Internet Baseball Awards do 5 for each of those (even with the ridiculous ROY crop in the NL this year).

Also, is there a reliable list of eligible rookies?

I like Runs Above Replacement by Position more than VORP.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 28 September 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

ESPN has a rookie category on their stats page; i think it's alright.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 28 September 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

"Also, is there a reliable list of eligible rookies?"

I just looked at the VORP for Rookie Position Players and Pitchers on BP.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 28 September 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

i enjoyed making my top 10 rookies way more than the mvp's.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 28 September 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

I think one year Prospectus had guys on their lists who were not technically rookies, however (maybe Mauer after he'd had a long September the year before?). Not that I fetishize the BBWAA standards, but I heard Buck Martinez list NL ROY candidates for 10 minutes the other night without listing a single pitcher, and if I didn't already know Buck is either perennially drunk or just inept, I'd have doubted Josh Johnson was eligible...

I would suggest waiting til Sunday eve to send yr ballot in, cuz, y'know, Brandon Webb has a start left. (and so may Carpenter)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 28 September 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

if anyone wants to vote for ten cy and roy candidates, it's cool but if people feel five is better go for it.

gear (gear), Thursday, 28 September 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

Gear can you postpone until Tuesday pretty please?

The season may not end until Monday.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 28 September 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

(and people have the nerve to call me out on "small sample size"... pshaw!)

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 28 September 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

not this upcoming monday, but the following monday is when ballots are due....

gear (gear), Thursday, 28 September 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

haha i had no idea it (ie, now) was even september yet, i just figured...

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 28 September 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

Date is just a counting stat.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 28 September 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

OY. I'VE BEEN PLASCHKE'D.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

Reference watch:

ESPN has final season RC/27
Baseball Prospectus has VORP only through 9/30
The Hardball Times only has Win Shares and PRC through 9/14-9/21.

Any other stat references are you guys looking at?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 2 October 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, I'm sure they'll all update through the end of the season by next Monday.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 2 October 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

would it be gauche to start an NL MVP Howard or Pujols thread? better to wait until we're nearer the actual vote?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 October 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

morbs' ballot?

pujols
beltran
berkman
howard?

gear (gear), Monday, 2 October 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Morbs' ballot:

David Wright's ass
Kyle Farnsworth's ass
Huston Street's ass
Albert Pujols

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 October 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

Are you saying that Albert Pujols doesn't have a nice ass?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 2 October 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

Yer funny, like Rep. Foley's IMs. (Also, Wright fell off my ballot with his second-half swoon.)

I also envision a thread Why Justin Morneau Is the 3rd-Most Valuable Twin. (And it's not because Joe Mauer has a splendid ass.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 October 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe that should have read "Albert's Pujols".

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 2 October 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

one week from now the ballots are due in. vote early and often! remember what's important:

stats = 16%
scrap = 25%
white+slow+rbi = 37%
intangibles = 32% (an extra 10% to boost the total to the appropriate number)

[email protected]

gear (gear), Monday, 2 October 2006 23:29 (nineteen years ago)

is Veteran Presence part of intangibles?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

Roughly 1/6th of the 32%.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

clutchyness makes up the remainder, i'd imagine.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

POISE in pitchers

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

Anybody else notice that neither Webb nor Carpenter were at the top of the league in any of the big SABR-stats?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Tempted to give it to the pitcher who had nearly a quarter of his team's wins and 6% of its many, many losses.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

Webb and Carpenter are razorthin close to Oswalt in VORP, isn't that a "big-SABR stat"? or do you mean just not first?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

uh, i think you also have to give big ups to veteran leadership and generators of clubhouse chemistry.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)
