Which is to say, when the hell did .314 / .356 / .459, even @ shortstop, turn into a line worthy of an eighty-million, FIVE YEAR deal?

David R., Friday, 2 March 2007 14:11 (seventeen years ago) link

&, with hindsight being spot-on, one of the BP guys noted that, w/ the value of Young's deal, plus the money they're paying the Yankees, they could have Alex Rodriguez, who's younger and, um, a little better.

I'm glad I was at work; I'm not ready for Keith Hernandez yet...

BP's value forecast for Young is $78.5mn over the next five. In the context of FUBARing A-Rod, yeah, it's stupid. But compared to Soriano or Zito?

milo z, Friday, 2 March 2007 19:55 (seventeen years ago) link

OK, I'm an idjit - A-Rod's 1 year OLDER than M-Yo.

David R., Friday, 2 March 2007 21:28 (seventeen years ago) link

It's not a great move, but it's respectable at least since Young has been so durable and plays a premium position reasonably well. I think it only becomes a mistake if they can't sign Teixera.

New Rangers pitcher Brandon McCarthy offered this rather innocent reflection on his time with the White Sox:

‘’It’s a very comfortable clubhouse. I love the guys in Chicago, but it was a somewhat older clubhouse. Most of the guys there are married and they have kids and it’s tough for guys like [Brian] Anderson and me to relate. We didn’t get to hang out with them as much. As much as I like those guys in Chicago, this is much more my age, my speed.”

This is fairly typical stuff from a young guy after switching teams, but it sent White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen into a borderline rage when WSCR host Mike North brought it up to him.

“I don’t want to talk about Mac because he made a couple of comments — I really hate him,” Guillen said. “I don’t like the comments he made about our clubhouse, about our players, about [us] negative people here. There’s one thing about Ozzie Guillen: Ozzie Guillen is never negative.

“Obviously he wasn’t in the position he liked to be. Well, we didn’t want him in the bullpen, but that was the only spot we had. If Brandon McCarthy thought he was better than the five guys I had, he’s wrong. The comment he made about the clubhouse that only two guys were single, everybody was married, nobody treated him the way he should … well, everyone in our clubhouse gets along. I think Brandon should look himself in the mirror.

“You played with us 162 games and all of a sudden you leave and say you don’t have a friend in the clubhouse? Only Brian Anderson? Well, he picked the wrong guy to be friends with. People forgot that Brandon McCarthy got caught a couple of times out at night. I called him into my office and said, ‘You been hanging around the city a lot, huh?’ I said, ‘I don’t have a spy on you, but I know a lot of people in the bars in Chicago. I’ve been here for 20 years, and they will tell me everything.”

Whoa, Ozzie, whoa. It’s spring training.

Of course, I delight in this one.

New skipper Lou Piniella already seems vexed. A 13-2 loss to the White Sox Sunday left him in a very bad mood.

“I’ve only been here four [games], but I certainly don’t like what I see,'’ Piniella told Chicago Sun-Times. “There’s a whole lot of work to do here.

“Our pitchers aren’t pitching well, and our hitters aren’t hitting very well. Outside of that, we’re OK.”

Wait I am confused. Is Young's contract an extension starting in 2009? Cuz if it is that is a terrible deal. Young will be 33 before the contract even begins!

Alex in SF, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh god it is. What part of this deal is good?!?!?

Alex in SF, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Not that I should really complain. The Rangers sucking only helps the A's.

Alex in SF, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Kotsay out for 3 months doesn't help the A's.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 9 March 2007 16:21 (seventeen years ago) link

There's that plus Kielty is gonna be out as long too for a knee surgery.

Steve Shasta, Friday, 9 March 2007 16:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Doesn't really hurt them, tho, esp. if Kotsay busts out that 700 OPS again (like he has the last 2 years). They'll have Bradley getting gimpy to CF, maybe move Swisher back to RF, have Shannon Stewart wound himself in LF, and play Replacement Level First Baseman at, um, catcher! MONEYBALL!

Awwww
